Shanhaiguan wedding

Shanhaiguan Pass reimagined by Claire Pearson.

"I wanted to see if I could I create a melodic piece from the discordant sounds in this field recording.  I discovered the instrument was a suona, a traditional reeded pipe instrument often played in China at births, weddings and funerals.
Shanhaiguan sits at the easternmost end of the wall.  It means both 'mountain and sea pass' and 'first pass under heaven.'  I imagined a wedding procession making its way from the walled city down to where the Great Wall meets the Pacific Ocean.

I used Ableton to isolate sections of the sample and experimented with reversing, changing the speed and tone until I found passages I liked.  I arranged samples into two tracks then I added some reverb to smooth out the sound and built up instrumentation around the inter-play of the sampled tracks."
