NEW 2022 GENESIS GV60 CONFIRMED FOR LAUNCH IN EUROPE THIS YEAR | AUTO EXPRESS

- Genesis, the Hyundai Group’s premium spin-off brand, has announced that its pure-electric GV60 coupe-SUV will go on sale in Europe later this year.

- Key rivals include the Audi Q4 e-tron, Tesla Model Y and Jaguar I-Pace.

- The Genesis GV60 is built on the same E-GMP underpinnings as the Kia EV6 and Hyundai Ioniq 5. It’s powered by a 77.4kWh battery pack, which offers a maximum range of 280 miles with the entry-level, single-motor, rear-wheel drive model.

- Prices for all three models in the SUV’s line-up will be confirmed closer to the car’s European launch date.

- At the top of the GV60 line-up, there’s an even faster Sport Plus variant. It shares the same dual-motor powertrain as the Kia EV6 GT, which means it produces 429bhp and 605Nm of torque. Genesis says this model will sprint from 0–62mph in four seconds flat

- Boost Mode. It’s activated by a button on the steering wheel, and gives the EV an extra 54bhp and 95Nm of torque to improve overtaking performance.

- Drift Mode, which sounds a little out of place on an electric SUV. Genesis hasn’t gone into too much detail about how the system works, but we know it alters the torque split of the all-wheel drive system to send more power to the rear motor.

- 10 to 80 per cent in just 18 minutes, while the car’s maximum AC charging performance (for home charging, for example) has been increased from 7.2kW to 11kW, compared to its Hyundai and Kia-badged siblings.

- The infra-red camera picks up the user’s face and automatically loads their pre-saved seat and mirror positions, infotainment and head-up display preferences.

- The GV60 can also wirelessly receive upgrades for systems such as the suspension, brakes, steering wheel, driver assistance technology and the central brain that controls the car’s electric motors and charging system.

GM KEEPS ORION ASSEMBLY IDLE UNTIL SPRING, LEAVING NO NEW BOLTS TO BUY | DETROIT FREE PRESS

- General Motors will keep its Orion Assembly plant idle for another month and a half.

- On Tuesday, GM said it will restart production of its Chevrolet Bolt and Bolt EUV April 4 as it continues to fix defective batteries as part of a global recall on the cars.

- "Our unprecedented decision to idle Bolt EV and EUV production over the past months has enabled us to prioritize battery module replacements," said GM spokesman Dan Flores. "As a result, we’ve made replacements available to Bolt EV owners who were in our high priority groups."

- Flores said once a dealer receives a Bolt EV or EUV made after April 4, they can sell those vehicles immediately. Recalled vehicles on dealer lots are on stop-sale and will need to have their battery modules replaced before they can be sold.

- Orion will build the electric versions of the light-duty 2024 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups alongside the Bolts when the expansion is complete late next year.

MERCEDES-AMG EQE 53 CHARGES IN WITH 677 HP | INSIDEEVS

- Mercedes now has two AMG-badged EVs with the introduction of the new EQE 53 4Matic+ that joins the EQS 53. As standard it has 617 horsepower and 701 pound-feet (950 Nm), but you can have that increased to 677 horsepower and 738 pound-feet (1,000 Nm) with the optional AMG Dynamic Plus package.

- With the pack, the EQE 53’s sprint time to 60 mph drops from 3.4 seconds to 3.2 seconds and top speed is upped from 137 mph to 149 mph. Powering all of this performance is a 90.6 kWh battery pack that is made up of ten modules totalling 360 pouch-type cells whose chemistry is less reliant on cobalt.

- The EQE 53 can be charged at a maximum rate of 170 kW, and according to the manufacturer, this will add 112 miles (180 km) of range in 15 minutes. Its WLTP range (EPA numbers not yet available) is up to 518 km (321 miles).

2024 POLESTAR 5 DETAILS EMERGE | EVO

- Polestar has revealed new insight into its forthcoming Polestar 5, a luxury four-door sports saloon developed to rival the Porsche Taycan, Audi e-Tron GT and Tesla Model S.

- , in 2024, Polestar 5 will be introduced, which is where things get really exciting.

- That’s because the sleek four-door saloon will be built on Polestar’s own bespoke architecture, a brand new bonded aluminium structure being developed here in the UK, with expertise derived from brands such as McLaren, Aston Martin and Lotus – not to mention a few of the F1 teams dotted around the countryside.

- Polestar’s British R&D team started out small, with just 81 staff in 2018, but will grow extremely quickly with the expansion of its UK facility, eventually supporting a staff count of 800 by the end of this year.

- Polestar will fit a low-line battery pack with a scoop taken out of the rear passenger section – as is found in the Porsche Taycan – but Polestar will allow for more rear legroom than the Porsche, something that will be mirrored in the 5’s ultimate chassis tune with a more relaxed GT-like setup being initially prioritised.

2024 POLESTAR 5 WILL DEBUT THE BRAND’S FIRST IN-HOUSE EV PLATFORM | THE DRIVE

- Polestar says the 5 will boast segment-leading handling, rigidity, and safety thanks to this new in-house chassis. Torsional rigidity is supposedly higher than a "traditional two-seat sports- or supercar" while the weight is apparently lower than that of smaller cars

- What's more, a new manufacturing process lets the company build the Polestar 5's platform and body simultaneously, cutting down on the time it takes to get a car on the road.

- Not only does this in-house platform enable the automaker to build the Polestar 5 quicker and have the car be stiffer and lighter, but it has also allowed the upcoming production EV to stick close to the Precept concept when it comes to aesthetics. Not a bad thing, given how good the Precept looks.

- While the Polestar 5 sedan is set to debut for the 2024 model year, the South Carolina-built Polestar 3 crossover is going to launch sometime this year.

HYUNDAI, KIA WIN AMID EUROPE'S EV SHIFT | AUTOMOTIVE NEWS EUROPE

- Korean brands, which enjoyed a good 2021, largely due to their electrified models. Hyundai and Kia were No 1 and No 2 in terms of share gainers among members of ACEA, the European automakers association.

- In some of the region's top markets the good news continued into 2022 as in the UK, where Kia was the best-selling brand in January.

- It was fairly easy to overlook Korean automakers in Europe before EVs started to take off.

- Hyundai, Kia and Japanese brands like Toyota, Honda and Nissan did not quite replicate the success they had appealing to buyers in the U.S. over recent decades.

- Emilio Herrera, chief operating officer of Kia Europe, said early in the pandemic that Europe had become the focal point for its global EV sales growth.

SOUTH KOREA INCREASES SUBSIDY FUNDING POT FOR 2022 | ELECTRIVE.COM

- The Seoul city government said it will pay subsidies to buyers of about 14,200 electric vehicles during the first half of 2022, as part of its bid to support the purchase of 27,000 electric vehicles for the whole year.

- Under the funding scheme, electric passenger cars, a maximum subsidy of 9 million won (about US$7,520) will be paid, the government said, adding vehicles priced above 85 million won are excluded from subsidy support. Electric trucks will be given subsidies ranging from 9 million won to 27 million won.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK WITH EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM

Tesla recently updated the Model Y Standard Range and the 0-60 time slowed by 1.5 seconds. There was a time when Tesla fans dismissed any other EV because they weren’t quick enough, but when making a pucharsing decision, how important do you personally rate performance.
