How bad is it to purchase the most expensive home in a neighborhood?

There is a common saying in real estate that you should "never buy the most expensive house in a neighborhood." Unfortunately, with the market being as feverish as it is, many people have no choice when moving but to buy the most expensive home in a given neighborhood. So what are the considerations for making such a purchase? Is it an automatic death sentence to your home's longterm value if you buy at the top of the market for that neighborhood? Or are there some situations where you might actually be saving money by purchasing the most expensive home in a neighborhood?
