Voiceover #2: morning meditation

"This chaotic re-edit of a recording of All India Radio, is the second in a series of short projects exploring how we attune ourselves to languages we don’t speak, or are trying to learn. As a listener, the original shortwave broadcast arrives at my ear as a panic-inducing tide - mediated by my own language and music, my fetishisations of India and of radio, my ignorance of linguistics, and my years in audio editing with its dull ontology of blobby waveforms and its rigid workflow. As a way of hearing All India Radio, and as a mourning process for everything I cannot hear, I was driven to create a process-based composition that would force all these competing mediations to conflict with each other, and that would force me to say to myself, “is THIS what you want?”. As such, I found listening back to it to be both cathartic and grounding, and a serviceable way of readying myself for whatever I might hear in the day ahead."

Composition by Hector MacInnes.
