The curious custom of keening or crying by semi-professional keeners at Irish wakes died out (as it were!) at the start of the 20th century. It had become a source of ridicule with attendees even openly laughing at the keeners. In its heyday, it was regarded as an essential part of properly mourning the dead at any decent Irish wake.
