A new dawn for Young Women Parliamentarians in the Transitional National Legislature

Episode 1723,   Sep 04, 2021, 08:04 AM

Following the agreement by the parties to the R-ARCSS with exception of Other Political parties (OPP) and nomination of respective parties’ representatives to the Transitional National Legislature, the President in a presidential decree reconstituted the Transitional National Legislature in May 2021.

The Female representation in the just reconstituted Transitional National legislature is unprecedented in the history of South Sudan and is a positive development although the four parties whose appointments were effected have not met 35% affirmative action for women agreed on in the R-ARCSS. 153 MPs women were appointed and sworn in. Out of 153 female members of parliament, young women’s representation is commendable.

South Sudan Women’s Empowerment Network with the support from UNMIS Gender Unit conducted a 2-day capacity building workshop to Young Women Parliamentarians aimed at preparing the young Parliamentarians as they take on their demanding tasks in the National Parliament.
