Diversity in Yachting with Gabriela Barragan: Guest Captain Emily Vazquez
Season 2, Episode 265, Aug 26, 2021, 05:00 PM
“Hiya! My name is Emily Vazquez. I was born in Dominican Republic and raised in Miami Beach, Florida. I currently hold a 100T master inland USCG captains license and go to school for nursing! I have been in the yachting industry coming up on three years in November!
Primarily freelancing on vessels under 100’ as a mate and captaining under 40’. I love everything about my job. From the dirty work getting down in the sauna that is the engine room to the glamours locations I get to explore. There is nothing else I see myself doing!
I stumbled into the industry while bartending Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show (FLIBS). A broker gave me a tour on a Mega yacht and instantly fell in love with the idea of making it a career.
From then to now I have worked on all sorts of boats. Each boat igniting a bigger fire in my soul to be behind the helm. I began as a deck/stew in the Miami Beach solely working day charters and aiming to one day be a captain on a 150’ yacht! Until then I am starting small with my single engine boats and slowly but surely working my way up 🙂 is this the part I should mention I am only 20 years old? If I can do it, so can you! “
