VOLKSWAGEN HANDS CEO DIESS CONTRACT EXTENSION AHEAD OF STRATEGY PRESENTATION
- Volkswagen on Friday handed Chief Executive Herbert Diess a contract extension under which he will lead the carmaker until October 2025, the group said, a victory made possible by the recent departure of works council head Bernd Osterloh.
- Volkswagen's supervisory board was discussing a two-year extension to Diess' contract, which would have expired in 2023
- Diess will be able to see through an ambitious goal Europe's largest carmaker has set itself by the middle of the decade, namely becoming the world's leading electric vehicle player and overtaking key rival Tesla
- "The Supervisory Board believes that under the leadership of Dr. Diess conditions will be optimal for the continued successful development of the entire company in the coming years as well, especially in view of Strategy 2030," said VW chairman Hans Dieter Poetsch.
SPANISH EV INVESTMENT COULD BOLSTER FORD'S EUROPEAN AMBITIONS
- The European Union has been very open about its desire to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, a goal that may also prompt it to require that new vehicles produce zero emissions by 2035, as Ford Authority reported earlier today. Now, a large portion of EU recovery funds – 4.3 billion euros ($5.1 billion USD) – will reportedly go toward a Spanish EV investment that aims to ramp up electric vehicle and battery production in the country, according to Reuters.
- The EV investment is part of a broader 13 billion euro incentive geared toward sustainable transportation, which is expected to grow by five percent by 2030. Spanish officials expect that government initiatives will increase the number of EVs registered in the country from 18,000 in 2020 to 250,000 in 2023, create 140,000 new jobs
- the European Union is reportedly planning on tightening its emissions standards in the coming weeks that will effectively result in a new ICE vehicle ban by the year 2030.
ONE MILLION NEW ELECTRIC PLUG-IN CARS JOINED EUROPEAN ROADS DURING 2021'S FIRST-HALF
- 2021's first half saw one million new plug-in passenger cars join European roads, the first 6-month period over 1 million Almost every fifth (17.2%) passenger car was a plug-in during the opening half PHEVs accounted for the majority (52.2%) of plug-in volumes in the 6-month periodEvery fifth (20.1%) new passenger car in June alone was a plug-in12-month-rolling cumulative BEV-only volume trend (Jul '20 - Jun '21) just below 1M
- During the most recent quarter, Q2 2021, 564,000 plug-ins were registered according to Schmidt Automotive Research data, with BEV volumes outpacing PHEVs in the second quarter with 284,000 and 280,000 volumes respectively
- The report expects 2.05m plug-in passenger cars to enter West European roads during 2021 with the penetration expected to remain modest up to 2025 when the next CO2 fleet average cut will enter into force and manufacturers use this window to push ICE models to finance their electric transition.
- The European Commission will propose, July 14th, a new CO2 roadmap and targets for 2030 (currently 37.5 per cent reduction over 2021 levels).The average emissions from new passenger cars in 2020 across the EU27, UK, Iceland and Norway was 107.8g/km NEDC-BT according to provisional EEA data.
FEDERAL GOV BLOCKS COLORADO ADDING EV CHARGERS TO REST AREAS
- Sometime in the near future, Colorado Department of Transportation officials would like for you to be able to pull over at one of its rest areas and charge your electric vehicle. But federal law that prevents the commercialization of interstate right-of-ways — including rest areas, park-and-rides, and similar facilities across the country — is preventing that. A change to that law, which has CDOT’s support, is part of the $715 billion transportation bill the U.S. House passed last week.
- The existing federal law dates back to the early 1960s and was intended to protect and promote private businesses — gas stations and the like — along highways. The federal government cited it in turning down a state plan to add charging stations to the Burlington Welcome Center on the Eastern Plains, CDOT officials said in a letter to the state’s U.S. House delegation.
- The House bill containing the law change now moves to the Senate, which is considering its own transportation proposal. How differences between the two will be reconciled remains unclear so far. The White House has been supportive of both, the Washington Post reported.
TESLA MODEL Y IS HOT BUT THE CHEVY BOLT EV IS A STEAL: DEALS ALERT
- There is a major model year update for 2022: the existing Bolt is getting a makeover and Chevy is introducing the all-new Bolt EUV.
That’s why you’re seeing 2021 Bolts priced to move.
But what’s different this time is, pricing on the 2022 Bolt is a lot lower, starting at $31,995. That’s roughly $5,500 off the MSRP for the current base model. And the slightly larger 2022 Chevrolet Bolt EUV, starts at $33,995. The 2022 Bolts will include options such as adaptive cruise control and GM’s Super Cruise (hands-free-driving) tech — both firsts for the Bolt.
OLA ELECTRIC RAISED $100 MILLION OF DEBT FROM BANK OF BARODA
- Ola Electric, the electric vehicles (EV) focused arm of ride hailing giant Ola, has raised $100 million
- Ola Electric will be looking to enter electric scooter manufacturing and selling.
- The factory will spread across 500-acres and the company hopes to make 10 million vehicles annually. The company aims to manufacture 15% of the world’s e-scooters by summer of 2022 and will also be looking to export these scooters.
- Ola Electric’s EV manufacturing plant is said to be the largest in the world. ANI Technologies’ chief executive Bhavish Aggarwal announced, last month, that Ola Electric’s scooter factory is nearing completion and the company expects to start rolling out vehicles soon.
DRAGTIMES TAKES TESLA PLAID MODEL S ON TRACK
- “We have Plaid Mode on. We turn on Drag Strip Mode. What that does is it lights up the Drag Strip Mode here and says, ‘conditioning for peak power performance.’ From past experience, this only takes two to three minutes. Gone are the days of the previous Teslas which are taking 40–45 minutes, draining the battery down before you get that run.”
- Brooks explained that the best run was 9.24, which was a tie with the current record set by Jay Leno. Their best numbers are as follows:
0–60 mph: 2.01 seconds
0–100 km/h: 2.11 seconds
0–100 mph: 4:19 seconds
0–130 mph: 6.99 seconds
0–150 mph: 9.17 seconds
A REPAIR WOULD COST $16,000 AT TESLA: THE ELECTRIFIED GARAGE DID IT FOR $700
- Donald Bone drove over some debris on the road, and something broke in his Model 3. The coolant leaked, and he was worried. Tesla told him Bone could drive to a Service Center. He took the car to one, and they detected the vehicle had a broken port. When Bone thought the repair would cost $800, he received news that he would have to pay $16,000 to replace the entire battery pack.
- His car did not have comprehensive coverage because he just switched his former car with the Model 3, and his insurance company did not want to pay for the repair. Without options, Bone asked for help in Tesla forums, and someone told him about the Electrified Garage.
- The bottom line is that Tesla Service Centers do not perform part replacements, just assembly replacements. In other words, if something small breaks or has to be replaced, they replace the whole module that includes it.
- As Bone said, he had the right to keep his old battery pack if he had paid $16,000 for a new one, something that the Service Center was not very willing to accept.
WHY TCO IS THE FINAL INCENTIVE FOR FLEET ELECTRIFICATION
- When and where vehicles are charged can have a significant impact on the total cost of ownership for an electric fleet, writes ChargePoint’s Alain Costa
- whilst fleets have spent over a century perfecting the simple infrastructure needed to store and distribute ICE fuel, the move to EVs requires entirely new infrastructure. This needs to be thought through: fleets cannot merely install a few sockets and hope for the best. A thorough understanding of the fleet’s needs, use cases and deployment is required. Businesses must ask themselves: will vehicles charge only overnight at the depot, or will they be taken home by drivers and charged there? Will these vehicles often drive beyond their range, meaning public or ultra-fast DC charging will be needed for a quick turnaround at the depot?
- Early adopters of EV fleets have already realised the 20-25% cost savings that come from greater efficiency, more affordable fuelling and reduced maintenance, putting themselves in a pole position for expansion as more vehicles become available and the policy environment moves further towards electrification.
