UNICEF warns that up to 1.4 million children in South Sudan face acute malnutrition this year.

The figure represents the highest number since the start of the conflict in 2013.

In its latest report on the impact of the humanitarian crisis on children, the UN children’s agency says the child mortality rate in the country is among the highest in the world, with 1 in every 10 children not expected to reach their fifth birthday.

UNICEF chief of communication, Yves Willemot says children in South Sudan are deprived from getting basic services.

Bouts of violence and conflict, recurring floods, droughts, and other extreme weather events fueled by climate change, and a deepening economic crisis have led to extremely high food insecurity, and one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises.
