It’s Saturday 9th June 2018 and this is your EV News Daily. Good morning, good afternoon and good evening! Wherever you're listening around the world, a very warm welcome from London, UK. Here is today’s news about electric cars and the future of transport. My name is Martyn Lee and I go through every EV article online so you don’t have to.
#FullyChargedLIVE Day 1! Good morning if you’re listening to this and you’re going.
THE FIRST ALL-ELECTRIC PORSCHE: NAME REVEALED
- I loved the name of the first electric Porsche. The Porsche Mission E. Great...they're in a mission to electrify. But alas that's not the name.
- The official Porsche YouTube just released a video, not much speech but it sounds like this...
- ...it ends on the caption Soul, Electrified.
- "News of Porsche developing its gorgeous Mission E concept into an all-electric sports car lineup has been very exciting, at least up until this point. According to a presentation by the CEO, the production version will unfortunately be called the “Taycan.” says Jalopnic. "The name was announced at Porsche’s 70th anniversary celebrations today by CEO Oliver Blume. According to Reuters, Porsche claims the “Taycan” name means “lively, young horse” and is meant to be a play on the symbolism of Porsche’s coat of arms. It sounds silly, though, doesn’t it?"
TESLA SAYS THE MODEL 3 BODY LINE IS NOW 95% AUTOMATED
- Electrek has picked out the highlights from Tom Randall at Bloomberg writing about a rare, and frankly surprising, invitation to look around the Model 3 Production lines: "Tesla invited Bloomberg to take a look at the Model 3 production line in Fremont after the most recent production shutdown to add the new line."
- “Tesla says the Model 3 body line is now 95 percent automated, including the transfer, loading, and welding of parts.”
- Fred Lambert said: “They also took a look at Tesla’s quality control for the Model 3, which includes 47 robots scanning the Model 3 bodies body line at 1,900 different points to match them to design specs with a precision of 0.15 millimeters".
- Bloomberg also said about the quality control: “During the final test drives on the track, sound recorders measure squeaks, rattles and wind and road noise that a test driver might miss. All of this data is stored with each car’s unique Vehicle Identification Number, or VIN, so service centers can trace any issue back to a root cause in the factory. The idea is that Tesla will be able to improve its cars, even after they’re in a customer’s driveway.”

ELON MUSK TEASES 'WAY MORE ADVANCED' AUTOPILOT FEATURES
- Elon Musk tweeted a reply to Ryan McCaffrey, saying: "No plans for aluminum pedals. Adds too much production complexity. Model 3 will def have summon, which will get way more advanced for S & X w HW2 Autopilot & all Model 3 cars."
- "Tesla is making big changes to Autopilot. On Friday, CEO Elon Musk revealed that the company plans to update its semi-autonomous driving system to bring the “summon” feature to the Tesla Model 3. The update is set to come as part of a broader push to make Tesla’s cars run smoother." according to Inverse.com: "In response to a question from Tesla fan Ryan McCaffrey, Musk wrote on Twitter that he plans to bring “summon” to the company’s newest car, which entered production in July 2017. This feature, already present on the Model S and Model X and introduced in the fall of 2015, enables the car to open a garage, enter, close the door, park and switch off. It can also do the reverse when you need to leave again. Tesla vehicles manufactured after October 2016 use the same setup of cameras, sensors, ultrasonic radar and GPS to enable these features, with an Nvidia Drive PX 2 on board capable of supporting over-the-air software updates."
2018 MAY US PLUG-IN ELECTRIC CAR SALES CHARTED: MARKET UP 48%
- Mark Kane at InsideEVs has been summarising last months EV sales in the U.S.: "May 2018 became the fourth best month for plug-in electric car sales in the U.S. with healthy growth of 48%."
- Last month here in the UK we were over 5%, but market share is just 1.5%.
- "Tesla Model 3 set in May an all-time sales record for any plug-in car in the U.S. – 6,250 (estimated by IEVs)." says Mark.

CHARGEWAY POSTS FIRST CHARGING SIGNS
- GreenCarReports has a really interesting article on signage for charge stations: "Charging has been a key obstacle to electric carbuyers, and it may not just be the number of public stations available. With three different "levels" of charging, and multiple charging speeds and connector types within each of those, it can be confusing for the average driver to know what type of chargers their car can use and what will give them the fastest charge their car can handle." says GreenCarReports: "Green indicates a "standard" J1772 connector along with its CCS Combo fast-charge counterpart. (A car with a CCS fast-charge connector takes a standard J1772 plug for slower charges.) Blue is for CHAdeMO DC fast charge connectors. (Cars that have a CHAdeMO fast-charge port also have a separate J1772 port for everyday charges.) Red is only for Teslas, which use their own type of connector.
I’d love to spread the word about electric cars so, if you can, share this somebody who might be interested.
