Well good morning, good afternoon and good evening, wherever you are in the world, hello and welcome to the Sunday 5th August edition of EV News Daily. It’s Martyn Lee here with the news you need to know about electric cars and the move towards sustainable transport.

'SAFE' LEVELS OF AIR POLLUTION MAY CAUSE SERIOUS CHANGES LINKED TO HEART FAILURE

  • "Even low levels of air pollution may cause heart abnormalities similar to those seen during the early stages of heart failure, a study has warned." writes Alex Matthews-king in the Independent newspaper: "UK research, published as the government consults on proposals for its Clean Air Strategy, tested 4,000 people and found those who lived near busy roads had larger hearts on average than those living in less polluted areas. This comes despite the fact that the participants came from areas where pollution levels were below the UK guidelines. Blood tests showed a clear association between people living on busier roads and increased levels or harmful nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and small air particle pollution (PM2.5) in their bodies."

TESLA SAYS ITS NEW SELF-DRIVING CHIP IS FINALLY BAKED

  • "Tesla’s biggest claim is that one day, all the cars it’s currently building will be capable of full-self driving. So when Elon Musk announced after the company's second-quarter earnings report that Tesla is developing its own computer chips, it was a momentous claim by the car company. “According to a story on Wired.co.uk: "Musk's grand reveal led him to boast the company has “the world's most advanced computer designed specifically for autonomous operation. Musk says the new silicon is an order of magnitude faster than the chips in their cars now, a product developed by NVIDIA, an industry leader and supplier to at least 20 other robo-car developers. The NVIDIA chips, Musk says, can deal with 200 frames of video per second, from the cameras around the car. Tesla’s chip can handle 2,000 frames per second, with some spare capacity left for redundancy and safety.

FIRST TESLA MODEL 3 PERFORMANCE VBOX TEST YIELDS 0-60 MPH IN 3.32 SECONDS

  • Simon Alvarez at Teslarati.com has been keeping an eye on those YouTube videos of Tesla Model 3 Performance runs and this is a good one. "Tesla enthusiast Eli of My Tesla Adventure was able to get behind the wheel of a fully stock Model 3 Performance earlier this week. Eli noted that he was able to use his VBOX, a device that measures a vehicle’s acceleration, speed, and overall stats during a specific run, when he took the Model 3 Performance for a spin. While a video is unavailable as per the electric car owner’s request, the YouTube host was able to share the data gathered by his VBOX in social media. Following are screenshots from the My Tesla Adventure host’s VBOX app on his smartphone. As could be seen in the Model 3 Performance’s VBOX data, the electric car was able to hit the 60 mph mark in 3.32 seconds."

TESLA HITS THE STREETS WITH NEW POP-UP EVENT IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA

  • "Tesla recently came out to The Collection in Oxnard, California, for a very quick and dirty pop-up. The event involved a handful of Tesla employees, the two larger Tesla vehicles, and some very basic flags rolling into town." reports Kyle Field at CleanTechnica: "Tesla chose not to bring its Model 3 to the two-day event, even though the company had blocked out plenty of room to host one. The representatives at the event shared that they had enough orders for Model 3 and were simply exploring the concept of a pop-up event in Oxnard to gauge interest."

SECOND-LIFE EV BATTERY MARKET TO GROW TO $4.2 BILLION BY 2025

  • "According to a recent report by research group Circular Energy Storage, the global market for end-of-life lithium-ion batteries is expected to be worth $1.3 billion this year." according to Marian Willuhn, www.pv-magazine.com: " While recycling batteries is common for portable devices, it can be postponed through ‘second-life’ applications in the case of EV batteries, with applications such as the use in energy storage systems. The report states EV batteries have optimal properties to be reused for energy storage, with regards to their capacity and remaining life-cycles. For this type of end-of-life use, EV batteries are placed in static energy storage systems on a residential and utility scale."

VOLKSWAGEN R DIVISION WILL LIVE ON ONCE EVS TAKE OVER

  • "Way back in the day, many people thought that electrification would be a death knell for performance cars, but oh, how our tunes have changed since then." says Andrew Krok for CNET.com: "Volkswagen's first foray into performance electric vehicles came by way of the I.D. R Pikes Peak, an all-electric racecar built solely for the purpose of smashing the Pikes Peak hill climb record, a feat it accomplished in late June. With 671 horsepower coming from its electric motors, the I.D. R didn't just capture the hill climb record for electric vehicles -- it broke the overall record. Volkswagen's R performance division is currently investigating the idea of performance-oriented electric vehicles, Autocar reports, citing a conversation with Jost Capito, the head of Volkswagen R. "If we do an R electric car, then it will be a proper R, or else it wouldn't make sense," Capito told Autocar."
  • "The division head claims it has an idea of when such a car would arrive, but with the rapid pace of development, that figure could change, so there won't be any official announcements just yet. The first two EV Volkswagens on its new MEB electric platform will be the I.D. hatchback and the I.D. Crozz crossover, the latter of which should be the first to arrive in the US."

BRITISH TOURING CARS TO GO HYBRID IN 2022

  • "British Touring Car Championship organizer TOCA has announced that the series will use hybrid engines from the 2022 season onward, confirming a move mooted by PMW in the March 2018 issue." says Andrew Charman, www.pmw-magazine.com: "It was confirmed at the TWG that for 2022 a specified hybrid unit would be fitted to all cars as an addition to their current drivetrain. This will allow each car to have a reserve of supplementary hybrid power available during each race, which can then be used by drivers as part of their overall race strategy. The TWG will now work with specialists to finalize the detailed engineering aspects of the hybrid system, technical decisions expected to be finalized over the coming 12 to 18 months."
