Well good morning, good afternoon and good evening, wherever you are in the world, hello and welcome to the Wednesday 29th August edition of EV News Daily. It’s Martyn Lee here with the news you need to know about electric cars and the move towards sustainable transport.
Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.
ZEO BECOMES FASTEST SELLING USED CAR
- "For the first time, an electric hatchback is the fastest-selling used car in the country." reports James Fossdyke for Motor 1: "The 2016 Renault Zoe electric hatchback was the fastest-selling used car in Britain during July – the first time an electric car has topped the charts. The little battery-powered Renault took an average of just 18 days to leave used car dealers’ forecourts – faster than anything else on the market."

TESLA WINS AGAINST ONTARIO GOVERNMENT
- Something of a relief for Canadian listeners. A judge in Ontario has agreed with Tesla in their complaint that the government there was discriminating against Tesla with one of their recent changes of policy, by removing the phase-out of the generous EV incentives.
- This is a story which has been a little misreported because they weren't taking away the incentives for Tesla owners but instead refusing them the phase-out. It was just as the Model 3 ramp was increasing and lots of cars arriving in Canada that all of a sudden a $14,000 rebate scheme, which is being phased out, was denied to those early reservation holders who had been waiting years for their cars. It was July 11th that the rebate was removed and the government said: "Inventory that dealers have on lots or orders made by dealerships with manufacturers on or before July 11, will also be honoured for the incentive provided that the vehicle is delivered to consumers, registered, and plated by September 10."
- However then it turned out Tesla owners wouldn't get until September 10, but if they didn't have their car by July 11, they'd miss out entirely.
- Tesla told Electrek: “We’re pleased with the Court’s decision to strike down the Ministry’s transition plan as unfair and unlawful. Tesla only sought fair treatment for our customers and we hope the Ministry now does the right thing by delivering on its promise to ensure all EV-owners receive their incentives during the wind-down period.”

ASTON MARTIN MAY BE FIRST WITH 800-VOLT CHARGING
- Porsche were thought to be first with 800volt battery systems with it's 2020 Taycan EV.
- "Prior to last weekend’s Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, Aston Martin CEO Andy Palmer tweeted a photo of his company’s forthcoming 800-volt system, to be built into an electrified version of its existing Rapid-E sedan."
- And now we've got some more from Andy Palmer from Green Car Reports.
- "Palmer told Green Car Reports that the forthcoming Rapid-E 800-volt electric car will be available late in 2019. Calling the Porsche technology “fabulous,” Palmer says his own Rapid-E and 800-volt charging system will be a precursor for the revived Aston Martin Lagonda brand. Lagonda will be a 100-percent electric-vehicle brand, and with that comes some trepidation.
- Andy Palmer: “Because no one's done it, no one has any clue whatsoever about how our luxury customer will use an electric car.”
- "To experiment with Aston’s drivers, with battery cars, and with charging, Aston will sell only about 155 cars to customers that Aston will choose, “because we can,” he says. The Rapid-E will be a limited edition model that will only be sold to customers willing to give qualitative feedback on how they use the car."

NEW 2020 AUTOMOBILI PININFARINA FP0 TEASED, GENEVA DEBUT CONFIRMED
- "Pininfarina has revealed a new teaser image of its upcoming all-electric supercar condenamed PF0, which has been shown to prospective customers in private viewings at this weekend's Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance." reports AutoExpress: "The final car will be revealed next March at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show, and the glimpse [shown in Auto Express] reveals the rear end of the forthcoming Tesla Roadster rival. It suggests a radical rear aerodynamic profile incorporating a pair of large, flat floating rear wings with integrated LED tail-lights."
- "The firm claims that the fully-electric PF0 will be the most powerful Italian sports car on the market and capable of 0-62mph in less than two seconds. A 250mph top speed has been targeted, Pininfarina says, while the PF0 will be capable of up to 310 miles between charges."
STUDY FINDS LONG-TERM EXPOSURE TO AIR POLLUTION NEGATIVELY IMPACTS COGNITIVE PERFORMANCE
- "Researchers from China and the US have found that long-term exposure to air pollution impedes cognitive performance in verbal and math tests." according to Green Car Congress: "In a study published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), they report that the effect of air pollution on verbal tests becomes more pronounced as people age, especially for men and the less educated. They suggest that the damage on the aging brain by air pollution likely imposes substantial health and economic costs, considering that cognitive functioning is critical for the elderly for both running daily errands and making high-stake decisions."

DAIMLER ENGINEERS GO UNDERCOVER TO GET DHL STREETSCOOTER ELECTRIC TRUCK
- When it wanted to examine the DHL electric StreetScooter, what do you think Daimler did?
- "The German newspaper Der Spiegel writes that when StreetScooter development had progressed far enough last year, the manufacturer rented trial vehicles to prospective customers so they could see whether the electric trucks fit their needs and give feedback. Among the trial renters was said to be a nursing-care service from near Frankfurt, willing to test it for patient transport." according to AutoBlog: "the truck's engineers quickly scouted the location of the test vehicle by GPS and discovered it had been driven across Germany from Aachen to the Daimler factory in Stuttgart. Later, the truck was spotted at the company test track. So the StreetScooter team lawyered up and drove to the site, demanding their truck back. Der Spiegel says the vehicle was returned half an hour later."

DIESEL TO ELECTRIC: CITY OF EDMONTON REPLACING SLEW OF BUSES
- "The Edmonton Transit Service (ETS) in Alberta has ordered 25 new 40-foot Proterra Catalyst E2 max vehicles, which will replace 25 of the agency’s existing diesel buses." says Betsy Lillian for NGTNews.com: "In addition to environmental benefits, the new electric buses are expected to deliver a cost-savings of roughly 30% for service and maintenance, says Proterra. Proterra will initially supply the City of Edmonton with two electric buses for infrastructure and charging verification. The company has plans to supply a total of 25 electric buses to be put into regular service in summer 2020."

FULLY ELECTRIC VESPA ELETTRICA GOES INTO PRODUCTION
- "Vespa's first fully electric scooter, the Elettrica, will go into production in September and be available for purchase in the United States at the beginning of 2019. The announcement was made by Piaggio, the parent company of the Italian scooter manufacturer." reports The Drive: "According to the statement, the Elettrica has a lithium battery that's designed to deliver 60 miles of range per single charge and can be recharged in just four hours. Piaggio also claims that the battery should last approximately 1,000 charge cycles, which is roughly 31,000 to 43,000 miles. The maximum speed for the Elettrica wasn't confirmed, but an alleged "Eco" mode will limit its top speed in order to preserve energy."
TOTAL CHIEF EXECUTIVE DRIVES AN ELECTRIC CAR, BUT ONLY ON WEEKENDS
- And finally, the Chief Exec for the French oil and gas giant Total said earlier this week that he and his wife drive...an electric car! But only on the weekends. As it was an oil event he made sure that he said when it comes to business, he relies on fossil fuels.
