NORWAY UPDATE 1
- Bergen - EV's everywhere, in a game of EV bingo it would be an easy win. If I had to rank them, it would be LEAFS, then BMW i3's and then Teslas.
- Lots of commercial vehicles.
- Little public charging i could find
- Tesla taxi!
TESLA CHALLENGE
- "Arizona resident Steve Sasman is currently 42 states deep into a 48 state trek across the USA in his 2012 Tesla Model S which now has almost 170,000 miles." reports Business Insider.
- He said: ""Not only can you road trip, it's hands down the best road trip vehicle in the world. At most charging stops, the car is ready before you're done eating, using the restroom or catching up on some work. You arrive feeling relaxed and refreshed, not fried & frazzled especially if you use AutoPilot. The fact it costs nothing is an amazing bonus."
- He's currently driven 10,000 miles on the trip...all at no cost thanks to the free lifetime SuperCharging that Tesla offers.
- "Not only has Sasman already saved about $1200 in gas on this trip, but thanks to Tesla's "Camper Mode" he's also saved about $1200 on lodging on the first 38 nights of the trip. Camper Mode allows the Tesla to keep the A/C or heat on all night so you can sleep in perfect comfort on the airbed with the back seats folded down. 18 nights in the Tesla, 4 nights in Hotels/Airbnb, and 16 nights with friends/family. 38 days on the road for a little more than $300 for lodging & fuel."
NOW'S THE TIME TO BUY A USED EV
- Domenick at InsideEVs asks a very pertinent question: "Who among us can afford to buy a brand spankin’ new electric vehicle? You know, a $49,000 Tesla Model 3, or a $69,500 Jaguar I-Pace. Heck, even a $37,495 Chevy Bolt? That’s not a lot of hands. Good news, then. According to Consumer Reports, now is a great time to buy a used EV for cheap."
- "Demand is somewhat low, while the supply, fueled by vehicles coming off-lease, is relatively high. This means, of course, means lower prices (the publication notes that this doesn’t necessarily apply to Tesla vehicles, which tend to hold their value better than other EVs)."
- It's a good time to check out MYEV.com - i don't know if you do this to, sometimes sort things in order of most and least expensive. The current cheapest car is a 2012 I-Miev and then a 2012 LEAF. The priciest is a 2017 Model X for $99k.
KIA NIRO EV EFFICIENCY
- I was talking yesterday about the Kia Niro and what sort of price it might come in. Dr Max Holland reminded me today about his Clean Technica article, which is very comprehensive look at the Niro EV, where it fits in the market, who might buy it and how it compares to similar size cars like the more premium I-PACE.
- "We know that the price of the Kia Niro in the domestic market of Korea is only very marginally higher than it’s smaller sibling, the Hyundai Kona. The premium for the larger sibling is only around 130,000 Won ($1160, €1000), which is less than 3% higher. Given what we know of the Hyundai’s existing price points in Europe, and assuming the Kia will have a similarly modest pricing bump, that’s still going to put it at around half the price of the I-PACE."

KIA SOUL EV SPOTTED WITH LESS CAMO
- "The next-generation Kia Soul EV has been spied again this week on the streets of Europe, minus the black sheets and false body panels shielding previous prototypes." according to James Wong for Car Advice: "While the body is still wrapped in a swirly black-and-white disguise, we can see the overall shape of the new Kia Soul won't change drastically from the current model, meaning it should still appeal to current fans. Noticeable changes, however, include the slim headlights up front, and hockey-stick style tail-lights extending toward the centre of the tailgate – contrasting with the current version's vertical motif."
- Yesterday I was talking about the Kia Niro EV and this will share a lot of the parts, and also from the sister brand Hyundai. How large will the Kia Soul EV battery be upgraded to? Well the Kona and Niro use 39 and 64kWh packs, the last I heard from different suppliers, but that's not 100%.

JAGUAR I-PACE DELIVERIES UNDERWAY
- A quick check of the Plug Iin Sales Scorecard on InsideEVs is always worthwhile, and they've been tracking sales of the new Jaguar I-PACE, which sold just 140 units in August. That's a running total of 558, so I would expect September sales to start to ramp significantly.
- Mark Kane says: "Additionally, it seems likely Jaguar will delay the launch of the I-Pace in other markets now (like in the U.S.) as it attempts to fulfill a mounting backlog of demand over in Europe."
- Meanwhile they haven't even got to grips with delivering large numbers of the I-PACE and we're talking about what's next. Fred at Electrek says: "The Korea Times reported that Samsung SDI won the contract to sell 5 GWh of 21700 battery cells from its Hungary factory per year: "Samsung SDI fiercely competed with other battery makers including LG Chem and Panasonic to win a contract from the British carmaker since last year. The company declined to confirm, saying “we cannot offer information related with our customer companies.” Samsung is reportedly going to start supplying the new cells for Jaguar Land Rover’s new electric vehicles in 2020."
- If that was enough for 55,000 cars at an average 90kWh pack, or maybe 50,000 if you factor for 90kWh being the usable size, that's a large proportion of total Jaguar sales. And even a good proportion of the larger company's total car production, that being Jaguar Land Rover.
- The other thought being if they're to be used for plug ins, like the Range Rover plug ins, those packs only need to be 10-20kWh to get decent all electric range.

UK COULD INTRODUCE GREEN PLATES
- "Electric and other ultra-low emission cars, vans and taxIs could be given special green number plates to boost awareness and increase the use of environmentally “clean” driving. Green plates are already used in Norway, Canada and China on green vehicles including electric and hydrogen cars, making them both distinct and visible to other road others." according to a report in the UKs Guardian: "The plans are contained in a government consultation announced on Sunday that seeks views on the design of green plates, and opinions on which cars and other vehicles they could be fitted on. The consultation comes as prime minister Theresa May prepares to address the first ever zero-emission vehicle summit in Birmingham and Buckinghamshire this week, which will bring together nations from across the globe to pledge collective action towards zero-emission journeys."
