Well good morning, good afternoon and good evening, wherever you are in the world, hello and welcome to the Tuesday 25th September edition of EV News Daily. It’s Martyn Lee here with the news you need to know about electric cars and the move towards sustainable transport.
Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.
This is show 246 so by the end of the week we’ll be on Show 250. Every 50 shows I’ve changed things up so far, added new features or even the script at the start. If you have any comments, suggestions or feedback please email me hello@evnewsdaily.com
PORSCHE TAKES A STEP FORWARD TO ALL ELECTRIC
- Porsche has made news already recently for dropping diesel from their line-up which needs to be carefully navigated, after all it was only 12% of their 2017 global sales and they haven't released a new one in 18 months, and now they're making positive noises about going all-electric.
- Steven Loveday at InsideEVs reports on the move: "Moving forward, however, manager magazin divulged that Porsche will only keep an ICE engine in the 911. From 2022 to 2025, the automaker will provide electric variants of the Boxster, Cayenne, Macan, and Panamera. By 2027, if not sooner, all other Porsche vehicles will be electrified. And by this, it seems to imply electric, not hybrid."

VW'S I.D. NEO TO BE "AFFORDABLE"
- "VW has now confirmed more details of the platform and how it will be rolled out when the I.D. hatch (codenamed Neo internally, although there’s no confirmation on whether that badge will be used in production) goes on pre-sale before the end of 2019." according to a report last week by Auto Express when the MEB platform was being unveiled to journalists, and I'm only picking up on some of the quotes from management.
- "Auto Express understands that the most modest I.D. hatch will get a 48kWh battery and that it will be available for the price of a well-specced diesel Golf - or around £27,500 after the UK government’s plug-in vehicles grant is applied."
- Christian Senger, VW’s Head of Product Line for E-Mobility, told Auto Express, “We will have three different ranges of I.D. hatchback, to allow for people with different budgets. The entry-level car will have a WLTP range of 330km (205 miles), and it will also have more limited performance. If people want a faster car then I don’t want them coming back after three months telling me that it’s fast but that the range is too short. So if you want a fast car, you’ll need a bigger battery - simple. For the mid-spec, we have actually exceeded our target, which was 400km (250 miles). It’s more than that - closer to 450 (280 miles). And we’re still finalising what the range-topping battery capacity will be.”
- "The first details of the new MEB platform show that it has a relatively long wheelbase on even the I.D. hatchback - around 2.83 metres, or more than 20cm longer than a current five-door Golf’s. The car will have a charging point at the rear of the driver’s side in the UK, and it will offer two forms of AC charging - 7.2kW and 11kW - plus DC charging at up to 125kW, the maximum that can be achieved with the car’s 400-volt electrical systems."
- "The I.D. will be VW’s first permanently online vehicle, allowing a range of services to be offered to customers through the cloud, and over-the-air updates to be installed in the same way as Tesla does with its cars. Only three of the car’s electronic control units (ECUs) are unable to be updated wirelessly."
UPGRADED NISSAN E-NV200 ACHIEVES 7,000 ORDERS SINCE JANUARY 2018
- High demand – particularly from delivery, transport and private hire businesses across Europe – has led to 7,000 new 40 kWh e-NV200 customer orders since launch in January 2018. That’s a 128% increase compared to same period in 2017.
- Among the recent orders, three taxi companies in The Netherlands have ordered a total of 50 new Nissan e-NV200 Evalia, the seven-seat passenger variant, to operate in the Rotterdam area.
- Under the new Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP) homologation procedure, the upgraded Nissan e-NV200’s advanced 40kWh battery delivers 200 km of range on the Combined Cycle and up to 301 km on the Urban City Cycle. This represents a 60% range improvement from a single charge over the previous generation.
- The Nissan e-NV200 also stands out in the marketplace with its unique bi-directional charging capability. This allows e-NV200 customers to use their vehicle batteries to store electricity, connect to and power their business, or even sell back excess electricity to help balance their local energy grid.
- This Vehicle-to-Grid Technology (V2G) has been extensively piloted in Denmark and is now becoming a commercial reality. Innovate UK will shortly launch a program of 2,000 charger units for residential and commercial application.
2019 CHEVY VOLT HAS A NEW, WEIRD PEDESTRIAN WARNING SOUND
- S. rules will require EV's to be making sounds soon to warn pedestrians impending doom if they step out in front of them whilst looking at their mobile phone.
- "Up until now, Chevy has come up with two different ideas to help solve this problem. Initially, the Volt included a pedestrian-alert horn button that the driver had to physically press to activate. When the second-gen Volt came out in 2015, it featured an always-on, one-speaker system that emitted a high-pitched buzzing sound. Now in 2019, Chevy thinks it has a much better solution." according to Autoblog: "On 2019 model year Volts, there will be two small waterproof speakers in the front and rear of the car that are linked up with the vehicle's gear selection and speed. That means the amount of noise emitted by the new Volt will vary with speed. Drive faster, and the sound will get louder. The actual tone of the sound is strange and almost trance-like in nature — it seems attention grabbing enough, without being displeasing to our ears."
AUDI SAYS NO TO STOCKING E-TRON AT DEALERSHIPS: SPECIAL ORDER ONLY
- And finally onto the subject of whether you should sell ready made cars to dealers and get them to shift them, or only build a car once a customer has ordered one and put down their deposit.
- Audi of America Scott Keogh said: "I think it would be a beautiful world if you can go to a dealer — and we’d like to find that beautiful world — with zero floorplan [expense] and proper, full gross on the car. This would be a beautiful state; so let’s go see if we can find this dream state. The same network that got us to double our sales, and got us to 200,000 units [annually], is going to be the same network that’s going to lead this electric revolution for us. And that’s a massive competitive advantage — an onboard and engaged network."
- At $80,000 you'd hope they could make the car work!
