HIGH PERFORMANCE SKODA VISION RS PLUG-IN TEASED
- Paris Motor Show is next week with Press Day from 2nd. At the show I'm looking forward to The Audi e-tron, the new BMW 3 Series which could come with a couple of PLUG INS and perhaps details of a full electric. The DS3 Crossback, the Peugeot e-Legend Concept will also be present.
- The next generation of plug in hybrid seem to be coming with 20-25 miles of range from a small battery, perhaps 30 if you're lucky. At the other end of the scale is the Polestar 1 hybrid with a 34kWh battery aimed at getting nearer 100 miles of pure EV range if you don't want to fire up the fossil.
- But how about something quick and in between? Bring on the Skoda Vision RS PHEV with 44 miles (70km) or electric range.
- "Previewing a possible RS version of the Rapid successor, the Vision RS looks decisively sporty and aggressive thanks to the generous use of carbon fiber and the front spoiler lip accompanying a mean bumper with fairly large air intakes. " says Adrian Padeanu for Motor1.com: "Using a lithium-ion battery pack with a capacity of 13 kWh, the electrified hot hatch can travel for up to 44 miles (70 km) without sipping any gasoline. Once depleted, the battery can be fully recharged in two and a half hours from a charging station, but you can also hook it up to any household socket. In addition, the car features an energy recuperation mode that will charge the battery on the go. We will get to see the Skoda Vision RS in the metal beginning October 2 when the Paris Motor Show will open its doors to the press."

NEW KIA SOUL EV BREAKS COVER...AGAIN
- We have many things to thank the Koreans for, like their current World Record for the World’s Tallest Lego Tower, or their fascination with technology so much they have robot teachers.
- But specifically recently, the Hyundai Kona Electric and the Kia e-Niro (nee Niro EV). And now the Kia Soul EV is getting an update. But will they update the name to e-Soul?!
- It has been seen again at the Nurburgring with much less camo than previously and fans of the Soul shape will be happy it's not changing too much. This time the spy photographers from AutoBlog got up close and personal: "It clearly shows that this car had 92 percent of its charge remaining, with an estimated range of 437 kilometers, or about 271 miles. That's a lot of range, and it's also in keeping with the European range estimate for the Hyundai Kona Electric, which was 292 miles. We don't expect quite that much range in the U.S., since the Kona is rated for 258 miles under EPA testing. But this makes us think the Soul could have roughly the Kona's U.S. range, which would be impressive. This could also suggest that the Soul EV will have the same 201-horsepower electric motor as the Kona and the Kona's cousin, the Niro EV."
- So my initial thoughts, is that 271 miles remaining at 92 percent on a 64kWh battery. Or is the Soul using the 39.2kWh battery, the smaller option on the Kona and e-Niro, which might make sense at the Soul is a smaller / lighter / more efficient car.
- "The interior is an evolutionary take on the current model. The biggest difference appears to be a revised infotainment system with a wider screen and buttons placed underneath, rather than on each side. This being the EV model, it has a little rotary knob for shifting rather than a lever, and the instrument panel shows a speedometer and a dial that provides power information."

WE NEED AN ELECTRIC CAR THAT'S A MODERN DAY GTI
- Here's an interesting question posed by Simon Lambert at This Is Money, and i like his thinking. "We need small, relatively affordable, fun-to-drive electric cars that create the 21st century version of the classic GTI. Of course, many motorists will need a more practical family car, but it is these fun halo cars that can win over reviewers, younger drivers, and owners looking for a fun smaller second car - and hit the sweet spot where a reasonable price meets desirability.”
- “Tesla’s great success has been built not just on making very good electric cars, but on their X factor. The Model S is a big saloon, but it’s also one of the most beautiful cars on the road. The Model X is not pretty, but it has those Falcon Wing rear doors. Jaguar has pulled off a similar trick with its I-Pace, which not only looks good but is by all accounts a superb car. Yet, those are £60,000-plus cars. Other than the accomplished but oddball BMW i3, at the more mundane pricing level, we have the likes of the Renault Zoe, Nissan Leaf and Hyundai Ioniq."
SEAT CUPRA RACER NEEDS A JOB LOT OF DRY ICE
- You know how excited I am about electric racing series. Not just Formula E Season 5 but the supporting series I-PACE eTrophy, World Rally Cross going electric has been delayed a bit but happens within two year.
- And there's the TCR International touring car champs, also in line for 2020, albeit only Seat looking at it with their Cupra brand.
- Road and Track say: "Four-hundred forty pounds of dry ice per day. That's what the e-Racer's battery pack demands for cooling, with an indicator warning the driver when it's time to return to the pit box for more. There's time for a coffee, because the ice-bath lasts for 20 minutes after each red flag."

IONITY - 400 CHARGING STATIONS BY 2020, 10 ONLINE
- The major alternatives to the Tesla Supercharging Network are coming along, with big plans, but it's fair to say things are coming along a little slower than some would like. Here in Europe IONITY is the network of Ultra Fast Chargers.
- Their website says there are now 10 up and running out of a total 400.
- There are currently another 16 under construction. As with Electrify America those chargers are up to 350kW. However as InsideEV's point out, it's a collaboration of auto makers who only want to support CCS and not CHAdeMO.
- “To demonstrate just how serious we are about the freedom to drive, for the rest of 2018 all you need to know is the number 8. Whether it’s in Euro, Swiss Francs, or British Pounds, each and every EV charge will be priced at a transparent set-rate of €8, or £8, or 8CHF per session. In Scandinavia the session fee will be 80 NOK / SEK / DKK. Easy and transparent – so you can get on the road today. For third-party payments, please check directly with your mobility service provider for their individualized rates.”

DAF PRESENTS MORE ELECTRIC TRUCKS
- "At IAA Commercial Vehicles, Dutch truck manufacturer DAF—a division of Paccar—is showcasing the LF Electric, CF Electric and CF Hybrid Innovation trucks" reports Green Car Congress: "The DAF LF Electric is a 19 tonne fully electric truck for zero emissions city distribution. The truck features Cummins technology with a 195 kW/266 hp electric motor (peak: 250 kW/340 hp). The motor is powered by a battery pack of up to 222 kWh, providing a range of up to 220 kilometers when the truck is fully laden. As the battery pack is modular, capacity can be scaled to the range required by customers.
- The DAF CF Electric is a zero-emission solution for urban distribution requiring higher payloads and volumes. This includes applications where single or double axle semi-trailers are the standard, such as in supermarket delivery. The CF Electric is a 4x2 tractor unit for up to 37 tonne GCW applications. The truck uses VDL’s advanced E-Power Technology for fully electric operation. The center of the intelligent powertrain is the 210 kW/286 hp (peak: 240 kW/326 hp) electric motor, which gets its energy from the 170 kWh lithium-ion battery pack."
