Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Tuesday 2nd October 2018. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through EV story today so you don’t have to.

Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.

First up a clarification. Recently on the podcast the news that Tesla Gigafactory is making 10,000 Model 3 drive units per week and I'd read conflicting reports of what makes up a complete drive unit. Sam Price has clarified on Twitter for me: "in industry a 'drive unit' commonly refers to an electric motor [and] power electronics to run it."

PARIS MOTOR SHOW

  • Bonjour my petit filous. It's the Paris Motor Show today (well, today if you're listening on 2nd October 2018, and even then it's press day).
  • Earlier this year journalists were joking that it should have been the Geneva Electric Car Show, such was the dominance of EV's there. So let's see what Paris brings. Since the Mercedes EQC was shown at their presentation in Stockholm in Sweden last month on September 4th there seems to have been a bit of competition for headlines - the BMW iX3, the Audi e-tron Quattro in particular.
  • I expect to see the Mercedes, Jaguar I-PACE and Audi all in force at Paris.
  • However there's an bittersweet storyline behind the glitzy launches and it ties in perfectly with the other red hot story of the day - literally to the DAY - did Tesla achieve profitability in Q3.
  • And can other makers achieve profitability with their EVs. For years now, armchair experts have lectured others on Twitter along the lines of 'just wait until the big German names get into EVs, then they'll show you how to make them AND make a profit'. Well now it's seems there's a fly in the ointment. It turns our making EVs for a profit might be a little harder than they thought.
  • According to Laurance Frost who has written an excellent piece for Reuters: "...concerns are mounting that the impact could be worse, as consumers resist paying more for electrified vehicles - forcing carmakers to sell them at a bigger loss to meet emissions goals.
  • Carlos Tavares, chief executive of Peugeot, Citroen and Opel manufacturer PSA said : "“What everyone needs to realize is that clean mobility is like organic food – it’s more expensive. Either we accept paying more for clean mobility, or we put the European auto industry in jeopardy.".
  • "A Sept. 25 profit warning by BMW blamed in part on electrification costs and tightening emissions rules, was “a first alarm signal”, Tavares said in a weekend radio interview." "Volkswagen and Mercedes parent Daimler, which between them have announced 30 billion euros ($35 billion) in electrification investment, both warned last month that it would not be enough."
  • "German luxury carmakers including Volkswagen Group, which includes Audi and Porsche, could put up with losses on electrified vehicles if it enables them to keep selling their biggest earners, upscale SUVs and large sedans."

40% OF EUROPEANS SAY NEXT CAR WILL BE EV

  • A new poll in 9 European Countries has given a really good insight into how the tide is turning from the general public to EVs. The survey was conducted in the first two weeks of September in nine EU countries: Belgium, France, Germany, Great Britain, Hungary, Italy, Poland, Spain and Sweden. In each country a sample of 500 adults were surveyed online meaning there was a total of 4,500 citizen attitudes polled.
  • "In a poll conducted by Ipsos Mori for NGO Transport & Environment (T&E), 40% of citizens surveyed say it is likely the next car they’ll buy or lease will be electric or fuel cell powered. Italians and Spaniards (both 48%) are most likely to say that they would be somewhat likely to buy or lease an electric or fuel cell car as their next vehicle, while the French and Germans (24 and 25% respectively) are least likely to say the same thing. Nearly two-thirds (62%) of Europeans think that carmakers are not doing enough to sell electric vehicles by attractive marketing, pricing and offering enough choice."
  • The negatives, or reasons they're hesitant for now, are the price, then the availability of charging points whereas range was only mentioned by 12%.
  • "Last November, the European Commission proposed a 30% reduction from new cars and vans in emissions from 2020 to 2030. The environment committee of the European Parliament voted for 45% and there are 19 EU countries supporting a 40% reduction target, although Germany supports just a 30% cut. The vote in the European Parliament takes place this Wednesday, 3 October."

INSIDE EVS SEPTEMBER 2018 PROJECTIONS

  • As always the InsideEVs Plug In Sales Scorecard is my go-to resource for checking sales figures so on the first day of the month let's see what their projections are and then the numbers will trickle in.
  • They say: "If Tesla is able to meet our expectations this weekend, we should see approximately 4,000 Model S sedans and 4,000 Model X SUVs delivered in the U.S. in September. More importantly, we expect the Model 3 to again set multiple new records, exceeding 22,000 Model 3s in the U.S. for the month. We also estimate that GM delivered just over 1,300 each of the Chevy Bolt EV and Chevy Volt this month."

FORD MONDEO HYBRID WAGON (ESTATE) ANNOUNCED FOR 2019 LAUNCH

  • Ford say they will soon be adding to the Mondeo Hybrid petrol-electric vehicle range – including the introduction of the first Mondeo Hybrid wagon (estate) variant – from 2019, the company today announced.
  • The Ford Mondeo Hybrid powertrain uses an electric motor to support the specially-developed 2.0-litre Atkinson cycle petrol engine in driving the wheels, and a generator to enable regenerative charging of the 1.4 kWh lithium-ion, air-cooled, recyclable battery located behind the rear seats. Regenerative braking technology captures up to 90 per cent of the energy normally lost during braking to replenish the battery. The Mondeo Hybrid is capable of driving in pure electric mode."
  • Roelant de Waard, vice president, Marketing, Sales & Service, Ford of Europe said "Electrified powertrains will continue to play a key role in our European product line-up. Ford is investing $11 billion and plans to deliver 16 fully electric vehicles within a global portfolio of 40 electrified vehicles through 2022".
  • The first hybrid electric vehicle manufactured by Ford in Europe, the Mondeo Hybrid is assembled alongside the petrol- and diesel-engine Mondeo range at Ford’s state-of-the-art facility in Valencia, Spain.

BEIJING TO ADD 1,628 MORE AUTO CHARGING PILES

  • "Beijing will add 1,628 more public charging piles for the new energy vehicles, according to a recent report by Beijing Youth Daily. The new charging facilities will be placed in crowded areas near shopping malls, hospitals, hotels and parks in more than 10 districts around the city, the newspaper said, quoting sources with the municipal development and reform commission." as reported by China.orsg.cn: "So far, the city has a total of 132,000 charging piles for new energy vehicles."

BUILD YOUR OWN EV?

  • And finally just for fun, do you fancy building your own EV? Tesla Forum user Steven Mairert posted some links to ebay because he was comparing the Tesla motor with others. He said: "During my short search, I found a Nissan Leaf Electric "Engine" and compared to the Tesla "motor," I find it not too surprising that the Tesla motor is much smaller--and based on all Teslas much more efficient"

  • If you fancy a 2015 Nissan LEAF motor and gearbox described as "fully working" this is the EM57 engine and gearbox and will run you $2,450.

  • Then again if you fancy buying the motor from a Tesla Model S, the rear drive unit, it will cost you $5,049.99. Described as "This is the Small Rear Drive Unit Motor for the Tesla Model S Dual Motor vehicles Fully functional, tested and working, ready to go into your Tesla! Replace that damaged motor today! Great condition used part, donor car was 2017 Model S 90D with 16k miles"
