Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Thursday 4th October 2018. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through EV story today so you don’t have to.

POTENTIAL EU LAW COULD RAPIDLY ACCELERATE ELECTRIC CARS
- We'll kick off with some definitions. Europe: that's the continent, 50 countries including Russia. The European Union: that's 28 member states, where we have one single market for trade and travel. 19 of those countries use the Euro if you're interested.
- Within that, if we're all keeping up, seven institutions to govern: the European Parliament, the European Council, the Council of the European Union, the European Commission, the Court of Justice of the European Union, the European Central Bank and the European Court of Auditors.
- Today I want to talk to you about the EU Parliament (directly elected 751 members) and the European Commission (28 commissioners from each member state) . So after than whirlwind geo-political recap, there's the news.
- The EU Parliament voted today, and it's really significant. They voted for 20% cut in CO2 emissions in new vehicles from 2025, and 40% by 2030. Their concern is twofold, to increase EV adoption and secure investment in EV related jobs.
- So the EU Parliament rejected the European Commission’s proposal of just 30% cut by 2030 when compared to 2021 levels. So the elected parliamentarians have pushed back on the commission, they want a sales target of ZEVs of 20% in 2025 and 35% in 2030. It's an incentive for selling ZEVs with a penalty for failing to meet those sales targets, and it's something the Commission backtracked on after pressure from...the German carmakers.
- Julia Poliscanova, clean vehicles manager with T&E, said: “Despite an unprecedented lobby effort by the oil and car industries, the European Parliament has voted decisively to require carmakers to make their cars cleaner and sell more electric and hydrogen vehicles. This vote is good news for the climate, for jobs in Europe and for the millions of Europeans who will start to enjoy cleaner air in their cities. A clear majority of EU governments supports Parliament’s decision to accelerate the transition to clean and electric mobility. Only Germany, Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria oppose higher ambition. We shouldn’t allow Germany to hold an entire continent to ransom over its failed diesel strategy. Ministers should approve Parliament’s decision next Tuesday.”
- So what's next? Transport and Environment say: "EU member states are expected to finalise their position on the law at the Environment Council on 9 October, where 19 European countries support a 2030 CO2 reduction target of at least 40%. Inter-institutional negotiations will follow and a final deal is expected by early 2019, ensuring the law is confirmed before the next European elections."
- The vote was: 389 votes to 239, 41 abstentions
- Colin Mckerracher pointed out: "Threshold for the low/zero emissions vehicle share requirement set at 50gCO2/km. Can't really get there with a traditional hybrid (Prius= ~70) or even some of the shorter range PHEVs."
SIGNS THE £35K MODEL 3 IS COMING
- One of the most incredible stats of the Model 3 is not the sheer amount they're making and selling, it's the revenue they're generating. A while back I saw a twitter post showing how Model 3 is the #1 in it's class, and I thought they'd made a massive mistake for a second. But the graph was actually comparing the revenue of each one and, because the Model 3 sells form $50k-$80k, it's making a lot of money.
- So those incredible monthly numbers are done even before the more affordable shorter range configuration is available. I'll get onto the specifics in a moment.
- InsideEVs and Teslarati have been looking at the case for the $35k model being on the horizon, if not this year, then as soon as after profitability as possible. On the check list:
- three lines being added to Gigafactory 1 to increase production
- more machines from Tesla Grohmann Automation (formerly known as Grohmann Engineering before Tesla bought it in January 2017) the makers of the machines which make the machines, and robots to make Tesla cars and batteries.
- Model 3 Drive Unit above 10,000 per week
- Timelines not slipping back, 3-6 months
- Tesla building at least one more tent at Fremont
By the time European deliveries begin, and certainly by the time they build RHD for the UK and Australia, those shorter range cars will be rolling off the production lines.

MODEL 3 GOES FROM A HEADACHE TO A MIGRAINE FOR RIVAL COMPANIES
- The Model 3 is no longer to be compared to other electric cars. For a while there we asked how it did against the LEAF or the Chevy Bolt. But now the next question to ask is how it sells against ALL other cars!
- Who would have thought the beast that is a Toyota Corolla, the affordable and dependable car which can't stop selling, would be beaten by one of those new-fangled electric whatsit-things. Corolla sales were down to 20,797 whilst estimated Model 3 sales were 22,250 for September 2018 in North America.
- So which cars are next? Surely these are the ones which naysayers didn't just say would never be dethroned but laughed at anyone who suggested it - the Honda Accord, the Civic, and the Toyota Camry. These are all staples of the monthly car leader board and Tesla is coming for their breakfast, lunch and supper.
- Can you imagine what will happen when the $35k model is opened up for orders.
- Or when the crossover style of the Model Y, which is increasingly popular starts production?
- i've got more numbers if you can take them. Remember Model 3 22,250...BMW 3/4 series 6,789...Mercedes C-Class 4,682...Audi A4 3,768, Lexus IS 1,798.
- Total BMW passenger cars 16,737 down 9.2% year on year. Total BMW if you include SUVs like the X cars and the light trucks 25,908.
- Of all the cars sold in the USA last month Tesla was 4th with Model 3. Even a slightly better month in October for them, and a slightly worse month for the Civis and Accord, could see the Model 3 chasing down American's #1 car the Camry.
- And once again I'll remind you on the big numbers, 83,500 total Tesla vehicles were delivered in Q3 2018.
- "Premium carmakers have had to remake their lineups to appease SUV-crazed shoppers in the U.S., all while fending off Tesla at the bottom and niche players like Maserati, Ferrari and Aston Martin at the high end, said Maryann Keller, an industry consultant in Stamford, Connecticut." reports Bloomberg
CHEVY BOLT IN A DEATH SPIRAL FOR NOW
- "GM is scheduled to increase production of the Chevy Bolt EV by the end of the year, but sales are slumping in the US in the meantime." reports Fred at ElectreK: "GM delivered 3,949 Bolt EVs during the last three months versus 6,710 units during the same period last year. That’s a 41.1% decrease in sales in the U.S., the biggest market for GM’s flagship all-electric vehicle."
- Jim Cain, GM spokesman, said that it was because they are “diverting production” : "“The decline is more a function of us diverting production to Canada and South Korea, coupled with low stocks in the U.S. We’re still proceeding with the Q4 production increase we announced in the last sales release.”

ROBERT DE E-NIRO
- Time for the strangest news of the week in the form of a press release from Kia: "Kia Motors launched a new pan-European advertising campaign for the new Kia e-Niro electric crossover – fronted by Oscar-winning actor Robert De Niro. As an ambassador for Kia’s new electric car, De Niro will highlight the e-Niro’s ability to eliminate barriers to electric vehicle ownership with a series of TV, print and digital advertisements. Kia’s partnership with De Niro will draw on the actor’s inimitable character and sense of humour to draw attention to the e-Niro’s numerous benefits – its long 485-kilometre electric driving range, high-tech infotainment features, energy harvesting technologies, and unique crossover design."
BMW SAYS TESLA RAMP-UP PUTS PRESSURE ON
- Tesla is hurting BMW. That was the essence of one tweet I sent yesterday which seemed to get it's unfair share of retweets. And it wasn't even my words!
- "Tesla Inc. has more than its share of headaches these days, but it’s nevertheless putting the hurt on competitors in the U.S. luxury market" says Bloomberg.
- And here's the quote I tweeted: “Tesla is now ramping up their volumes, and it’s putting pressure on that market segment”.
- That was the chief executive officer of BMW North America, Bernhard Kuhnt.
DENMARK TO BAN PETROL AND DIESEL CAR SALES BY 2030
- The other thing i put out yesterday which also seems to have captured attention is this story about Denmark. "Denmark announced on Tuesday (2 October) that it will ban the sale of new cars with internal combustion engines by 2030 and hopes to have one million electric and hybrid cars on the roads by then." according to Sam MOrgan from Euractiv.com: "In a speech to parliament, Prime Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen said that “diesel and petrol cars in Denmark must be the past. The future is green,” adding that all sales of new fossil-fuel-powered cars will cease in 2030. Rasmussen’s energy minister, Lars Chr. Lilleholt, announced the ban during the government’s climate council last week but did not mention a timeframe in any detail. “In just 12 years, we will prohibit the sale of new diesel and petrol cars. And in 17 years, every new car in Denmark must be an electric car or other forms of zero-emissions car,” Rasmussen said, implying that hybrids will be phased out in 2035."
