TESLA SOFTWARE VERSION 9.0

  • This week, Tesla owners across North America are waking up to a car that is smarter, safer and more intuitive than ever before. Our most substantial update yet, Software Version 9.0, introduces a refined and simplified user interface, along with entirely new features for Model S, Model X, and Model 3, as well as on Tesla’s mobile app. To receive Version 9.0 as quickly as possible, connect your car to WiFi. Here’s an overview of what’s new.

  • Tesla Mobile App Updates - Using the Tesla app, you can initiate a vehicle software update remotely without having to be in your car. Now, you can use your phone to send a destination to your car’s navigation. Simply use the “Share” button in your favorite map app.

  • Dash Cam - Model S, Model X, and Model 3 vehicles built with Hardware 2.5 (introduced in August 2017) now allow you to record and store video captured from the forward-facing camera when your car is in use.

  • New Apps & App Launcher - For Model S, Model X and Model 3, the new application launcher brings all your apps together in one place, including your Calendar, Energy, Web Browser, Rear View Camera, Phone and Charging apps. Three new apps for Model 3 bring web-browsing capabilities, calendar integration with your mobile device, and the ability to monitor energy consumption in real-time or view the projected energy use for an upcoming trip.

  • Navigate on Autopilot (coming soon)

  • With Software Version 9.0, we’ll be expanding our existing suite of Autopilot features with future over-the-air updates and all-new functionality in the coming months.

  • Full 360° View - Now, all eight external cameras from our Full Self-Driving hardware in every Model S, Model X and Model 3 are active, enabling better situational awareness on the road with a 360-degree visualization of surrounding vehicles.
  • Blind spot monitoring, which previously relied solely on the ultrasonic sensors, now uses the side and rear facing cameras to detect vehicles and displays them on-screen. The 360-degree visualization also shows vehicles in adjacent lanes, even when they’re behind or far ahead of your Tesla, and multiple lanes to each side of your car are now visible.

  • Plus, Enhanced Navigation Routing...Obstacle-Aware Acceleration...Fun & Games.

FAKE NEWS? "THE REASON WHY ELECTRIC CARS WILL ALWAYS BE EXPENSIVE"

  • "ELECTRIC vehicles will always be more costly than fuel-burners, according to a senior BMW executive. “No, no, no,” is Klaus Frölich’s reply when asked if EVs will ever equal the prices of equivalent conventional cars. “Never.” according to news.com.au: "Batteries are the problem, explains the 58-year-old BMW board member in charge of development. Lithium-ion cells that can store the standard 1 kWh unit of electrical energy cost $170 to $250 (€100 to €150).“It’s very simple,” says Frölich. In EVs with 90 to 100kWh battery packs, the cell cost alone will be $17,000 to $25,000. “You can produce whole cars, only with the cost of the battery,” he adds."

VOLKSWAGEN PLANS MASSIVE ELECTRIC CAR OFFENSIVE: 1 MILLION EVS BY 2025

  • InsideEVs has the rundown on VW's MEB platform which will be in use until 2030. The MEB platform will enable VW Group to produce electric cars of various sizes and classes:

  • battery capacity of up to more than 100 kWh (111 kWh in case of concepts)
  • batteries will be liquid cooled/heated and should withstand entire life of the car
  • range: from 200-340 miles (330-550 km) in WLTP
  • rear-wheel drive or dual motor all-wheel drive configurations
  • fast charging at up to 125 kW (DC)
  • on-board AC charging at 11 kW (option of wireless charging in the future)

  • “Volkswagen also plans to produce wall boxes that offer 22 kW (DC) charging capacity and work in a bidirectional manner, allowing energy to be supplied to the grid. At night, electric vehicles connected to the bidirectional wall boxes will serve as a storage battery for surplus capacity. “Even with the anticipated increase in the number of registered electric vehicles, the available power grid will be sufficient. Take Germany as an example: one million electric vehicles would consume approximately 2.4 TWh (2,400,000,000 kWh) of power per year. Annual energy consumption in Germany is 517 TWh. Thus energy consumption will only rise by 0.5 percent due to the use of electric cars.”

TESTING THE UK'S EV CHARGING STATION NETWORK IN A HYUNDAI KONA

  • Now Richard Ingram is one of the motoring journalists I recommend following on Twitter. And in Auto Express he's been taking a look at UK charging by driving the KONA on a bit of a press trip, a challenge set by Hyundai for some writers, who all drove KONAs overnight for 12 hours to see who would win. Unfortunately EcoTricity chargers come in for some bad publicity: "However, after five minutes our phone was suggesting no power had been delivered at all; while the charge time was falling, no energy was being transferred. Worried that we were wasting time as our car refused to charge, we hurriedly headed outside to find our fate. Frustratingly, our fears were realised when a glance at the plug socket showed the charge light had gone out. While we’d wasted only 10 minutes, with no on-screen explanation we had no idea whether it was our wrongdoing, the car’s, or indeed a faulty charge point. Determined to give it another go, we opened the app and resubmitted our card details. Again, the process appeared to work, before dropping out three minutes later. We switched to the other stand available, only for the same problem to occur. Feeling desperate, and with only a few miles of range added, we had no choice but to head south for the next service station."

VOLVO’S POLESTAR BRAND IS ASSEMBLING PROTOTYPES

  • "Polestar has started assembling verification prototypes of its upcoming plug-in hybrid sports car as Volvo’s standalone electric performance brand prepares to produce customer cars next year." according to TechCrunch: "Verification prototypes of the Polestar 1 vehicle, which are built largely by hand, mark the first testing phase for production. The vehicles will be crashed and driven through different kinds of weather and on-road conditions — the kinds of tests that help engineers identify problems and tune the car.  The company plans to build 34 of these vehicles at a prototype production facility in Gothenburg, Sweden. Polestar will likely pay particular attention to how the carbon-fiber body of the vehicle holds up under testing."

ELECTRIC VEHICLES HALVE DRIVERS' EXPOSURE TO TOXIC EMISSIONS

  • "Zero emission capable taxis can halve a driver’s exposure to toxic exhaust pollutants, according to new research" reports FleetNews: "It found that drivers of diesel taxis are exposed to pollution levels 1.8 times higher than those driving an electric model. Initial analysis found that while cab drivers face the same level of exposure to poor air quality as other commercial vehicle drivers, and experience double the exposure at work compared to outside of work, their choice of vehicle made a very significant difference. Average exposure to nitrogen dioxide and black carbon during a standard shift was 1.8 times higher for drivers of the older diesel taxis compared to those in all-new electric cabs."
