Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Thursday 11th October 2018. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through EV story today so you don’t have to.

Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.

Thank you to yet another Patreon Executive Producer, but I can’t say who they are!  Thank you, mystery benefactor!

2019 HYUNDAI KONA ELECTRIC INTRODUCED IN US WITH 258-MILE RANGE

  • Hyundai today introduced its convention-breaking Kona Electric crossover to U.S. media at a driving introduction in Southern California. 2019 Kona Electric models will be produced in Ulsan, Korea and will be available in the beginning of 2019, with initial availability in California and subsequently in the ZEV-focused states in the western and northeastern regions of the U.S. market.
  • The Kona Electric powertrain employs a high-efficiency 150 kW (201 horsepower) permanent-magnet synchronous electric motor supplied by a high-voltage 64 kWh lithium-ion battery. The battery system is liquid-cooled and operates at 356 volts. Battery pack energy density is 141.3 Wh/kg (greater than Chevy Bolt), with a total battery system weight under 1,000 lbs. In addition, Kona Electric EPA-estimated MPGe is 132 city, 108 highway, and 120 combined.
  • The Kona Electric utilizes a standard Level-II on-board charging system capable of a 7.2 kW rate of charge for rapid recharging characteristics. Kona Electric estimated range is a segment-leading 258 miles, meeting the varying needs of owner lifestyles. An eighty percent charge can be achieved in 54 minutes with a Level-III quick charge (zero to 80 percent charge @ 100 kW charging capability), using the SAE-Combo charging port, while a 7.2 kW Level-II charger takes nine hours and thirty-five minutes.

NISSAN LEAF ELECTRIC CAR ADVERT BANNED FOR MISLEADING CHARGE TIME CLAIMS

  • "Nissan’s advert for its LEAF electric car has been banned over misleading claims about the time needed to charge the vehicle’s battery." writes Ben Chapman for The Independent: "The Japanese carmaker’s website claimed that the Leaf could charge up to 80 per cent of full capacity in 40 to 60 minutes, with a footnote explaining that this was dependent on a number of conditions including the battery temperature and size, the ambient temperature and the type of charger used. Nissan said the ad did not specifically state that the battery would be charged to 80 per cent within an hour, clearly qualifying any claim by making clear that timings were dependent on other factors. Three people had complained that the advert was misleading, according to the Advertising Standards Authority."
  • Nissan said: “We were very disappointed with the ruling made by the ASA, although of course we will respect their decision. We constantly review and react to customer feedback to ensure that we are giving the very best possible service and information.”

EU REGULATIONS TAKE TWO STEPS FORWARD, ONE STEP BACK

  • A recap on news last week. The European Commission wanted to have more relaxed emissions regulations, but the European Parliament voted for stricter targets. Germany have been lobbying particularly hard for no more than 30% reduction in CO2 targets as they have a massive diesel industry to protect.
  • AP says: "Officials from the council of EU member governments, parliament and the executive Commission were to negotiate Wednesday in the wake of environment ministers' agreement late Tuesday to require automakers to reduce average emissions of carbon dioxide by 35 percent from 2021. The Commission had initially proposed 30 percent, and the parliament voted for 40 percent; talks now aim to reach a final agreement before the end of the year. Some European officials expressed disappointment that the 35 percent goal agreed on under the compromise wasn't tougher, especially following a UN climate panel's urgently-worded warning Monday about the far-reaching consequences of failing to contain global warming. But the European auto industry association said that while carmakers support reducing greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide, the proposed reduction risks harming auto workers and their companies' competitiveness. It said the 3.4 million jobs in automotive manufacturing represent 11 percent of total EU manufacturing employment. The German Association of the Automotive Industry, which represents major automakers such as BMW, Daimler and Volkswagen, said the 35 percent agreement among governments "missed the chance to formulate the regulation in a way that is realistic technically and economically."

DENMARK DOES U-TURN ON ELECTRIC CARS TO REACH FOSSIL-FREE FUTURE

  • Denmark plans to postpone tax increases on electric vehicles as part of a slew of new measures the government is seeking to consolidate the country’s reputation as a “green pioneer” and help it achieve its climate goals." according to Bloomberg: "The measures are among 38 proposals that ministers in Prime Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen’s center-right government put forward on Tuesday to reduce CO2 emissions by as much as 37 million tons."

ELON'S EX COMMENTS ON HIS ATtITUDE

  • Elon Musk's outbursts are his pushback against the status quo, ex-colleague Reid Hoffman says. "Musk is focused "three, five, 10 years into the future," said the LinkedIn co-founder, who worked alongside Musk at online payments system PayPal. "Part of his grit, part of his determination to get to that long future is to push back."

BOLLINGER B2 ANNOUNCED

  • There’s nothing like announcing one car before your first one is one sale. Ahem, Model Y. Ahem, Tesla Semi. Ahem, Bollinger B2. It's their pickup truck designed by someone with a pencil and a ruler - this things is all straight lines. THe cab is a box, on top of a box with the pickup bed, that's a box. And the front, that's just a square box.
  • First Bollinger Tweeted: "The all-electric, all-wheel-drive Bollinger B2 Pickup Truck.
  • Same DNA as the B1, both trucks sport dual motors, all-wheel drive, hydropneumatic suspension, in-wheel portal gear hubs, 120 kWh battery pack... Reserve here: http://www.bollingermotors.com"
  • Then Bollinger said: "The new B2 incorporates everything that we’ve learned in making the B1, and takes it in an exciting new direction. It’s always been the plan to have both the B1 and B2 start off our line-up. Now that we have so much incredible data from testing our B1 prototype, we can put all of that engineering knowledge into our final four-door B1 and B2 vehicles. It’s the Pickup I always wanted and something crazy better than what’s available on the market today."
