AUDI FINED FOR DIESEL VIOLATIONS

  • "Audi, a division of Volkswagen, said it was fined 800 million euros ($927 million) on Tuesday for violations tied to heavily polluting six- and eight-cylinder diesel engines." as per Reuters: "Audi accepts the fine and will not lodge an appeal against it, the company said. By doing so, it said it admits its responsibility for the deviations from regulatory requirements. Volkswagen Group received a similar 1 billion euro fine in June when prosecutors in Braunschweig also used a so-called administrative order to punish VW for oversight problems which allowed millions of polluting cars to hit the road."

KIA E-NIRO SCORES IN HOME MARKET

  • Maybe it's new, maybe I've just not seen it before, but Kia are currently featuring the Kia e-Niro prominently as the lead item on their UK home page; it says: "The All-New Kia e-Niro is the only “mid-size SUV” EV car available: it offers a combined all-electric, zero-emissions powertrain with crossover practicality, intelligent packaging and eye-catchy design. When powered by the high-capacity 64 kWh lithium-ion polymer battery pack, the All-New Kia e-Niro will provide a driving range of up to 301 miles* on a single charge. Plugged into a 100 kW fast charger, it takes only 54 mins to recharge the 64 kWh battery to 80%."
  • And Kia hit a new record last month in it's home market of South Korea - that record being 1,000 electric cars sold in a month. And how did they do that? The Kia eNiro, or Kia Niro EV depending on what it's called today.
  • "Currently the Hyundai Kona Electric and the Kia Niro EV represent the new generation of electric cars from the Hyundai Kia Automotive Group. Range is no longer a problem, but availability and price still are. Moreover, the Kia Niro EV will be joined by the next generation Kia Soul EV early next year." according to Pedro at Push EVs: "Also last month, Kia’s sister company, Hyundai, sold 102 units of the Hyundai IONIQ Electric and 1.382 units of the Hyundai Kona Electric in South Korea. It’ll be interesting to find out in the next months which one, the Hyundai Kona Electric or the Kia Niro EV will sell the most."

HYUNDAI SAYS NEXT YEAR’S IONIQ ELECTRIC WILL GET A RANGE BOOST

  • "When the Hyundai IONIQ Electric went on sale early last year, it offered one the industry’s most compelling set of EV features: 124 miles of range, a price below $30,000, and a lot more passenger and cargo room than the Chevrolet Bolt, Nissan Leaf, or Chevy Volt." reports Bradley Berman for InsideEVs: "Hyundai’s senior group manager for alternative vehicle strategy, Gil Castillo, during our drive of the 258-mile Kona Electric last week said “The Ioniq’s range will improve at the model-year change. It will get bigger. It will be a nice improvement but not like the Kona’s range. It doesn’t matter that the Ioniq has better fuel economy. That doesn’t matter as much as the body style, which is so much more important.”
  • "Now that we know the Ioniq’s battery pack will get bigger next year, the question becomes how big? "

GOOGLE MAPS ADDS EV CHARGING STATION INFO

  • "Following recent updates that help users plan their commutes and group events, Google Maps is now helping EV drivers figure out where to charge their vehicles. A new feature is rolling out today that will let you search for charging stations and provide you with useful information about that station." says Mallory Locklear for Engadget: "Just search for "EV charging stations" or "EV charging," and Google Maps will locate those nearby. It will also tell you what types of ports are available, how many there are as well as the station's charging speeds. In the US, it will also source info about SemaConnect, EVgo and Blink stations. UK users will have access to Chargemaster and Pod Point stations, while Australia and New Zealand EV drivers will see info on Chargefox stations."

XCEL ENERGY INVESTING BIG IN ELECTRIC VEHICLE FUTURE

  • "Xcel Energy plans to invest more than $25 million to promote the use of electric vehicles. In a filing with the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission, Xcel Energy has announced a range of innovative programs that expand upon its support for the growth of EVs." which i picked up from Renewable Energy Magazine today: "For residential customers, Xcel Energy will offer more options including a new subscription service that will provide drivers with a set bill for EV charging. Xcel Energy is working on a fast charging corridor pilot that will leverage public and private funds to increase the availability of fast charging stations on highways and other major corridors. Xcel Energy also hopes to make it easier and more affordable for large fleet operators like Metro Transit, the Minnesota Department of Administration, and the City of Minneapolis to integrate electric vehicles into their fleets."

AMERICAN PEOPLE GOOGLE TESLA THE MOST

  • "New data suggests that Tesla is the most popular automaker in the US, based on Google search history." according to CarBuzz.com: "The data was segregated by nation, giving us an interesting look at which brands are most sought after in each country. In North America, the most frequently searched car brand is Tesla, likely given the absurd headlines generated by CEO Elon Musk. Google recorded more than two million searches for the brand in the last 12 months in the US and Canada alone. Tesla is also the most searched for automaker in China, Hong Kong, Singapore, Norway, Barbados, Turks and Caicos, the Cayman Islands, the Bahamas, and Bermuda. In Europe, the story is a little more conventional, with German brands making up a majority of the volume. France, Spain, Italy, and Latvia searched for Volkswagen the most of all, while Germany, the, UK, the Netherlands, Portugal, and Belgium all skew towards Mercedes-Benz."

50 CAR TESLA DESTINATION CHARGER FACILITY IN HONG KONG

  • "Tesla is beefing up its vehicle charging infrastructure in Hong Kong to help lure back customers after an end to the city’s tax breaks caused sales to plunge." reports Bloomberg: "Destination charging facilities are ideal for people working, living or shopping in the area, according to the Tesla spokeswoman. Superchargers, an option while on the road, can charge 50 per cent of the battery in around 20 minutes, she added."

JAGUAR I-PACE WINS SUNDAY TIMES CAR OF THE YEAR

  • And finally an email from Karthik who asks me for the latest on the I-PACE and says I haven't talked about it lately, well...
  • "The Jaguar I-PACE all-electric SUV has been named as Sunday Times Car of the Year. The I-PACE was also named Green Car of the Year, securing its fifth major award since its worldwide reveal in March. The I-PACE will be able to achieve a 0-80 percent battery charge in 85-minutes using DC charging (50kW) and offer a range of up to 292 miles on a single charge. Home charging with an approved Jaguar AC wall box (7kW) will achieve the same state of charge in just over ten hours. The I-PACE is Jaguar’s first vehicle to include the Touch Pro Duo infotainment system, capable of over-the-air software updates, and uses artificial intelligence to adapt to a driver’s personal preferences, ensuring driving and infotainment settings are matched to each individual using the car."
  • Whilst the sales figures in countries around Europe are in the tens and hundreds, not tens of thousands, deliveries ARE ramping up.

What's more important...size of battery or efficiency? Tesla recently topped efficiency charts and the Hyundai IONIQ is another model which does well. But the race for a bigger battery is also on. So what would you rather on a new EV - a large battery or a smaller more efficient battery, even if it meant you had to stop more often?
