Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Sunday 21st October 2018. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through EV story today so you don’t have to.
Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.
STANDARD RANGE MODEL 3 IS 4 TO 6 MONTHS AWAY
- Mark Kane at InsideEVs said over the weekend: "Tesla recently announced that is expanding its Model 3 family with a surprising new battery size version – Mid Range – and removed the rear-wheel drive Long Range version, the question now is when will we finally see the Standard Range version? The official answer is 4-6 months, which could be February-April 2019, if there are no delays. The Standard battery Model 3 should be rated for 220 miles (354 km) or more, while the Mid and Long Range (RWD) are estimated for 260 miles (418 km) and 310 miles (499 km). The price of the Model 3 Standard should start from $35,000 before any incentives. The Mid Range starts at $45,000, while the Long Range (RWD) was at $49,000 (with some obligatory equipment packages)."
- Tesla said: "As Model 3 production and sales continue to grow rapidly, we’ve achieved a steady volume in manufacturing capacity, allowing us to diversify our product offering to even more customers. Our new Mid-Range Battery is being introduced this week in the U.S. and Canada to better meet the varying range needs of the many customers eager to own Model 3, and our delivery estimate for customers who have ordered the Standard Battery is 4-6 months.”
- And finally an ElonTweet: "“We came up with a new design that achieves the same outcome, that’s actually lighter, better, cheaper and we will be introducing that around the end of this year – probably reach volume production on that in Q1 or something. That will make the car lighter, better, and cheaper and achieve a higher range.
JAGUAR REMOVES CAR SAFETY FEATURE BECAUSE IT DISTRACTS PEDESTRIANS
- "Jaguar has removed a safety feature from its new I-Pace model because it proved as a distraction to pedestrians. The audible vehicle alert system (AVAS) was designed to warn visually impaired pedestrians when an electric vehicle is approaching, as the cars are almost silent when operating at lower speeds." reports the UK Independent: "The company then developed a new sound, which is emitted from a speaker located behind the front grille. The alert can be heard in every direction, and cannot be switched off. Jaguar engineers worked for four years to develop the AVAS, and consulted with charity Guide Dogs for the Blind to “ensure real people are at the heart of our product testing”."
TESLA'S FULL SELF DRIVING, 0-60 TIME AND SUSTAINED PRODUCTION.
- Three quick headlines from Electrek to catch up from yesterday...
- Tesla removes ‘Full Self-Driving Capability’ package from its options due to ‘confusion’
- A comments from Kipp "Here's how I see it from Tesla’s perspective: why leave money on the table? I think initially, offering FSD was a way for Tesla to get some extra money. However, as most customers weren't purchasing FSD (I'm the exception), it may make sense to just not offer it for now to simplify the ordering process and reduce questions. I see removing the FSD option as a huge show of confidence, because Tesla has only been charging $3K-$4K when selling the feature with a new car. As they get closer to FSD being a reality, they can now charge $5K or possibly even more! There's no new price listed for FSD when it does become an option for an OTA upgrade. So again why leave money on the table?"
- Tesla starts advertising quicker 0-60 mph acceleration for Model 3 Performance
- Tesla is now able to maintain production of close to 1,000 vehicles per day. Fred Lambert writes: "According to a reliable source familiar with the company’s production, Tesla has produced about 6,800 cars, including around 4,800 Model 3’s, over the last week. It adds up to about 12,200 Model 3’s and just over 18,300 vehicles for this quarter as of early this morning. The biggest takeaway is that Tesla is now about to maintain a production of about 1,000 vehicles per day and close to 7,000 vehicles per week – including nearly 5,000 Model 3 vehicles."

Putting range aside, because everyone wants more range what do you feel is lacking in today’s EVs? Perhaps it's design, options, a choice of models, a lack of education, cost or even social pressure? We would love to know what it really is that's stopping people from switching.
