Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Sunday 25th November 2018. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through EV story today so you don’t have to.
Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.
TESLA MODEL 3 PERFORMANCE CONQUERS CA RACEWAY
- Yesterday I was talking about the Porsche Taycan being able to do multiple laps of the track without fading or needing special battery treatment, and then today Conner in L.A. sent me a Teslarati article: "Tesla has started rolling out the “release version” of the vehicle’s Track Mode, a feature that optimizes the electric car’s performance and handling so that it could be driven hard on the track. Earlier this month, Kristy Morgan, whose LinkedIn page notes that she is “is an engineer and supply chain professional with expertise in materials and services procurement, strategic sourcing, and supplier auditing” took her Model 3 to the Thunderhill Raceway in Willows, CA, where she attended an event that taught how to drive on a closed circuit. The Tesla engineer further stated that she experienced “no power limiting, no thermal limiting, no ‘limp mode,’ and no brake fade” during the duration of the course. Perhaps the most notable image from Kristy Morgan’s Track Mode sessions, though, was the consumption chart of her Model 3 Performance. As could be seen in one of her Facebook uploads, the Model 3 Performance with Track Mode showed an energy consumption of 890Wh/mi — something that is rarely seen in Tesla’s electric cars."

RANGE ROVER EVOQUE PHEV SCHEDULED FOR 2019 WITH 11.3 KWH BATTERY
- Also yesterday I was talking about the new Range Rover Evoque 48v hybrid and I was wondering how soon I'd hear about one with a plug. And then I saw InsideEVs: In late 2019, also the plug-in hybrid Evoque will hit the market as the third PHEV after the Range Rover PHEV and Range Rover Sport PHEV. The Rover Evoque PHEV doesn’t thrill us much as the battery capacity will be just 11.3 kWh. The expected range remains unknown."

PERMISSION GRANTED FOR £25MN NORWICH GRID-SCALE BATTERY AND EV CHARGING STATION
- "Battery storage developer Pivot Power has been granted planning permission for a £25mn grid-scale battery and electric vehicle (EV) charging station in Norwich. The 50MW battery is reportedly part of a £1.6bn UK-wide project by the developer to provide a 2GW battery network to offer demand-side response services. The Norwich announcement follows planning permission being granted in Southampton and Carlisle. "
SONO MOTORS INCREASES PRICE OF ITS SION SOLAR-POWERED ELECTRIC VEHICLE
- And finally today Fred has news of a price rise of a car lots of people are really looking forward to: "Sono Motors, a Germany-based EV startup behind the Sion, a solar-powered electric car, has announced progress in developments of their powertrain and they say that it led to a significant increase in the price of the car. The Sion is equipped with both a battery pack, which can be charged like a regular electric car, and also a system of integrated solar cells that can charge the vehicle – albeit slower. Adding solar to electric vehicles has so far been mostly superficial, but Sono claims that it adds up to 30 km per day."
- So how significant is that price rise?
- They say: "“It is now clear that the Sion’s battery will have a capacity of 35 kWh. We have opted for a battery technology that is based on 51Ah-PHEV-II cells, which is particularly future-oriented and features by far the highest energy density available on the market to date. Since then, however, the situation has changed radically: emissions scandals, diesel driving bans and climate changes have enormously increased the pressure on politicians and automobile manufacturers to expand electromobility. This is leading to rising demand on the EV market and also to the fact that cell prices have not decreased as much as expected. For this reason, we have to adjust our expectation of the Sion’s battery price to €9,500."
