Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Wednesday 28th November 2018. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through EV story today so you don’t have to.
Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.
A quick note to kick off. I saw various reports today of Tesla sales being down 70% in China. I think it started with a Reuters report which was picked up by others, Tesla were forced into a short statement: "“This is wildly inaccurate. While we do not disclose regional or monthly sales numbers, these figures are off by a significant margin.”
The Model S and X are on sale there and whilst a 40% import tax is bad news, Tesla said they'll absorb as much of that cost as they can.
AUDI E-TRON GT ACTUALLY DESERVES TITLE OF TESLA FIGHTER
- I generally hate the fact any EV is called a 'tesla killer' but here's a car which is a genuine, life for like competitor, to a Model S.
- If you could buy one.
- The Audi etron GT I teased yesterday has been revealed in camo. Think Audi A7 and add batteries. I'm confident the VW-owned Porsche Taycan platform is underneath and if it did around 250 miles on a charge from a 100kWh battery, most would be happy.
- We know more tomorrow, or today if you like, as it's revealed at the L.A. Auto Show. For now it looks like any premium Audi and that's a good thing. I worry about the efficiency as the Model S 100D is listed as 335miles range EPA, and it does 0-60 in 4.2 seconds. So perhaps the Audi has to undercut it on price a little. Perhaps we'll be surpirsed when the official stats are released. I don't predict the 800 volt system in the Porsche but definitely 150kW charging as a minimum, considering VW are art of the IONITY network in Europe and VW is rolling out Electrify America.
VOLKSWAGEN I.D. BUZZ CARGO CONCEPT
- From one concept to another - the VW I.D. BUZZ CARGO. Based on the MEB platform and similar to the surfers dream EV of the I.D. Buzz, it takes on the role of an electric VW Transporter. But it's 4 years away, due 2022. It's another one revealed in L.A. this week, VW saying good for last mile deliveries in cities.
- VW say: "As the newest member of the I.D. Family—a new generation of fully-connected electric vehicles—CARGO features long range driving capability. Depending on the size of the battery pack, CARGO can achieve ranges between about 200 and 340 miles on the WLTP cycle. If the vehicle covers fairly normal distances in the city on a daily and weekly basis, a lithium-ion battery with an energy capacity of 48 kWh is recommended. If greater range is needed, the energy capacity can be increased up to 111 kWh. Outside, the CARGO concept is differentiated from the I.D. BUZZ by a new solar roof, wide-opening rear doors and a new rear bumper. The solar roof features a photovoltaic system that generates so much energy that it is able to extend the range of the vehicle by up to 9.3 miles a day. With a view towards optimizing cargo space via a shelving system, there is no sliding door on the driver’s side."
SOUTH KOREA'S SK INNOVATION TO BUILD FIRST U.S. EV BATTERY PLANT
- "South Korea's SK Innovation said on Monday it will spend 1.14 trillion won ($1.01 billion) to build its first electric vehicle battery plant in the United States to better compete in the global EV battery market." reports Autonews "The plant will have an annual capacity of 9.8 gigawatt-hours of batteries. SK Innovation will begin construction in the southeast U.S. state of Georgia in early 2019, with production targeted for 2022, the company said in a statement. Last month, SK Innovation said it was considering building an EV battery plant in the United States to win customers in one of the world's top markets for electric vehicles. SK Innovation, which owns South Korea's top refiner, SK Energy, and a unit of the country's No. 3 conglomerate, supplies its batteries to several global automakers, including Daimler and Hyundai Motor , but it does not have any U.S. clients."
HYUNDAI LAUNCH AUSTRALIA’S CHEAPEST ELECTRIC CAR
- "Zero emission motoring has just become more affordable as Hyundai launches its $44,990 purely electric Ioniq. The Ioniq Electric is now Australia’s cheapest pure electric car, undercutting the far smaller $47,490 Renault Zoe. The cheapest Tesla you can buy — the Model S 75D — is $146,512 to drive away." according to News.com.au. Phil Roberts the MD of the solar and energy storage company Electric Future asks: "£25,600 cheap...UK it's £28,940 isn't it? VAT difference? Or UK usual premium".
2018 LA AUTO SHOW PREVIEW: GREEN-VEHICLE INTROS THAT MATTER
- Finally Green Car Reports has given us their Top LA Auto Show preview highlights.
- Audi e-tron GT we just talked about, BMW Vision iNext, Byton K-Byte (as seen in Shanghai earlier this year), new Kia Soul EV wih a 39.2kWh battery, the Nissan LEAF 60kWh and 100kW CHAdeMo charging probably had a 99% chance of making an appearance but that's now been shelved, Rivian R1T and R1S and Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid (PHEV 17miles range).
