Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Thursday 29th November 2018. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through EV story today so you don’t have to.

Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.

And speaking of MYEV.com they posted a new article yesterday titled “Taking Charge Of Your Electric Vehicle”. The nation’s network of public EV charging stations is expanding, and is making the idea of a cross-country trip running solely on battery power a reality. From types of chargers, to the various networks and their costs, it's a great intro to charging.

I realised yesterday I've been putting a lot of the miscellaneous notes or follow up comments at the start of the show, rather than getting into the news. So news first today, and at the end I’ll tell you about a buddy at the LA Auto Show and two Executive Producers of this show on Patreon who just flew from Cali to London and popped in to say hi.

2021 RIVIAN R1S ELECTRIC SUV IS JUST AS POTENT AS THE PICKUP

  • "Rivian revealed its R1T electric pickup truck to the world yesterday, and now we get to see the company's second vehicle: the R1S SUV. They're essentially the same vehicle but with different bodies set on top of Rivian's skateboard chassis architecture. This means the same otherworldly acceleration and long range figures apply to the SUV, even though its shape is a fair bit different than the truck." reports Autoblog. "it's clear Rivian was going for a boxy look with an off-road capable flavor. Somehow it's able to pull off this "tough truck" persona while still having an air of luxury. Interior styling is identical to the truck as well, but the SUV seats seven to the pickup's five. From what we can tell, the floor looks entirely flat, which should lend itself to some impressive passenger room. Zero to 60 mph arrives in a ridiculous three seconds. The highest power figures actually come from the middle-sized battery pack with 754 horsepower."
  • Prices from $72,500 before incentives but you're waiting until 2020, and both pickup and SUV will arrive at the same time.
  • Fred at Electrek adds: "With the R1S, you don’t have a bed, but you do gain a third row for up to 7 passengers. The rest of the specs are virtually the same except for the R1S being a little shorter and it doesn’t have all the same utility features as the pickup truck"

CHARGEPOINT RAISES $240 MILLION

  • "Electric vehicle charging network ChargePoint has raised $240 million in a Series H funding round that attracted a diverse group of investors from the automotive, energy, financial, venture capital, utilities, and even oil and gas industries." according to Tech Crunch: "ChargePoint, which designs, develops and manufactures hardware and software solutions across every electric vehicle use case, has raised more than $500 million to build out its network."
  • VentureBeat point out: "Founded out of California in 2007, ChargePoint is among the biggest EV charging networks in the world, with more than 57,000 charging spots across North America, Europe, and Australia. A few months back, Google Maps started displaying EV charging stations from ChargePoint and Tesla, among other providers, which is just one of numerous moves that should help raise EV’s profile."

2020 LINCOLN AVIATOR LANDS IN LA WITH POTENT PLUG-IN POWER

  • "After showing the prototype at the New York Auto Show earlier this year, Lincoln is opening the door on the production model of the 2020 Aviator, showing off both gas and plug-in variants ahead of its world debut at the 2018 Los Angeles Auto Show." reports Eric Goeres for Motor1.com today: "In general, things are big on the Aviator. It’s a big SUV, with big wheels and big wheel wells, with big doors and big windows. Inside, the pilot and co-pilot seats are huge, gorgeous things that are jam-packed with adjusters, massagers, heaters, and coolers. For more performance, the Aviator goes reaches for the electrical socket, offering a plug-in hybrid powertrain with a twin-turbocharged engine in the Grand Touring model that nets 450 hp and 600 lb-ft of torque. Lincoln hasn’t released pricing yet, nor has it said when its newest CUV will arrive in showrooms."

VOLKSWAGEN E-UP! PRICE CUT REACHES UK: INTERIOR GETS EXTRA FLAIR

  • And this podcast covers all things great and small, let's get really small, with the e-Up. Mark Kane at InsideEVs.com says: "The most recent price cuts of the aging Volkswagen e-up! spreads throughout Europe and recently reached the UK, where the manufacturer states it as a £3,250 (€3,664) value boost. The e-up! is not only £2,935 (€3,310) cheaper, but also received more standard equipment, including height adjustment for the driver’s seat and a rear-view camera, as well as a “stylish new seat trim design” that “provides extra flair”
  • It costs £19,615 OTR including the £3,500 PICG, for a tiny 18.7kWh battery and 83 miles of range.

NISSAN LEAF HELPS TO POWER COMPANY’S NORTH AMERICAN FACILITIES

  • Working with Fermata Energy, a vehicle-to-grid systems company, Nissan North America is launching a new pilot program under the Nissan Energy Share initiative, which leverages bi‑directional EV charging technology to partially power its North American headquarters in Franklin, TN, and its design centre in San Diego, CA.
  • The Nissan Energy Share pilot program will continuously monitor a building's electrical loads, looking for opportunities to periodically draw on the LEAF's "lower-cost energy" to provide power to the building during more expensive high-demand periods. This constant monitoring, called demand-charge management, could result in significant electricity savings and could offer the secondary benefit of reducing the burden of peak loads on local utilities.
  • The Nissan Energy Share pilot program using Nissan LEAFs will serve as a test of both technology and business viability as Nissan and Fermata Energy investigate the outcome for possible commercialization.

AUTOMOBILI PININFARINA TEASES THE PF0 ELECTRIC HYPERCAR

  • "Automobili Pininfarina isn't at the L.A. Auto Show, but the Italo-German carmaker didn't want to skip the reveal-happy festivities. From its headquarters in Munich, execs showed off the rear aspect of the coming PF0 in genuine carbon fiber." according to Jonathon Ramsey for Autoblog: "First impressions are of a giant diffuser with a little bit of car attached. We shouldn't be surprised that a car with 1,925 horsepower, 1,700 pound-feet of torque, a sub-2-second 0-60 time and a top speed beyond 220 miles per hour would feature bodacious air management."
  • If you need to ask what it costs, you can't afford one.
