Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Monday 3rd December 2018. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through EV story today so you don’t have to.

Firstly welcome to new Patreon supporter, and Podcast Producer DENNIS BREITHAUPT: "I am holding a model 3 reservation for over a year now and am eagerly awaiting opening up of the configuration tool for Germany - going for performance most probably. :)"

Also hello to ALAN ROBSON who is a new EXECUTIVE PRODUCER supporting at $10 a month. Follow him on Twitter @ScottishEVOwner – happy St Andrews Day for last Friday

MUSK EMAIL TO STAFF

  • "“If you are able to help in any way with getting Model 3 production to a steady 1000 per day at excellent quality, everyone at the company should please consider this their top priority. Body production currently appears to be our limiting factor, so it needs the most support right now. Please focus on simplification and reducing cycle time first and then uptime.”"

  • “It’s important to bear in mind that the cost of the car is made up of about 10,000 unique parts and processes. depending on how you count it, the current cost of a standard range Model 3 would be around $38,000, so each part or process step only costs around $3.80. That means finding cost efficiencies is a game of pennies, even though it might not seem so.”

  • “We will definitely offer a $35,000 version of the Model 3. And probably at the end of this year is when we will be able to make a smaller version of the battery pack, and get into volume production of $35,000 version in Q1 next year. We would definitely honor that obligation, and we would do so right now if it were possible.”

INSIDEEVS.COM EXCLUSIVE: VW’S $21,000 FUTURE EV IS ACTUALLY A NEXT-GEN E-UP!

  • "Volkswagen recently created a bit of stir when Bloomberg reported that the German auto manufacturer would be launching a $21,000 (18,000 euros) Tesla competitor. We covered the story here also, and were wondering what Volkswagen had up its sleeves, since its current EV roadmap of I.D. vehicles didn’t include such a vehicle." reports Tom Moloughney for InsideEVs.com: "So, we were fortunate to sit down with Matt Renna, Vice President of Volkswagen North American Region (NAR)-G4 at the LA Auto Show yesterday to sort this out. Renna is also a former Tesla Product manager, so he knows the electric vehicle market very well. Renna explained that Volkswagen wasn’t adding a new “surprise” vehicle into their I.D. lineup. The Bloomberg story was referring to the next generation e-Up. Volkswagen will be upgrading the e-Up’s battery which will give it a longer range and like the current e-Up, this vehicle won’t make it to US shores and will only be available in Europe. Renna couldn’t comment on the release date of it, since it’s not in his market, but other reports claimed the new $21,000 EV would make its debut sometime in 2020."

NEW GENERATION FIAT 500E WILL BE PRODUCED IN EUROPE

  • "Currently the Fiat 500e is produced in Mexico and sold in some states of the USA, but the next generation Fiat 500e will be produced at FCA’s Mirafiori plant in Turin, Italy." reports Pedro at PushEVs.com: "Fiat 500e will get a new platform entirely designed for small electric cars. This was announced yesterday by FCA during a meeting with trade union signatories."

  • CEO Mike Manley – who replaced the dinosaur Sergio Marchionne – said:“Mirafiori will represent the first installation of a full BEV platform applied on the new Fiat 500, capable of scaling to other applications worldwide. Additional investments across our Jeep, Alfa Romeo, and Fiat brands will realize the benefits of existing plant capacity as well as scale and sourcing efficiencies from a common vehicle architecture, and Plug-in Hybrid Electric propulsion (PHEV) system, while preserving traits unique to the brands”.

MULTIPLE PORSCHE TAYCAN PROTOTYPES RIP THROUGH NURBURGRING FOR TRACK TESTING

  • "Several of Taycan’s test mules were spotted taking on the [Nurburgings] turns and straights in true Porsche fashion." according to Simon Alvarez who has been uncovering YouTube videos: "The video, which was taken by auto enthusiast Automotive Mike, shows at least seven Taycan prototypes being track tested on the Nurburgring. Based on clips of the vehicles, particularly the way some prototypes accelerated after navigating a turn, Porsche seems to be refining and testing the track capabilities of the Taycan’s different variants. While all of the Taycan test mules featured impressive acceleration as they hugged the track very well, some of the prototypes seemed to have slight differences in terms of performance."

  • "Porsche, after all, has not announced the specific price of the vehicle, though the Taycan’s model-line director, Rober Meier, noted to Automotive News that the company is expecting a price “somewhere between a Cayenne and a Panamera.” This means that while the Taycan would likely start at $75,000 (considering that the Cayenne starts at $66,000 and the Panamera starts at $85,000), there will certainly be versions of the vehicle that feature more performance for a higher price."

NISSAN DEBUTS SCORCHING NEW LEAF NISMO RC RACE CAR

  • "Unveiled in Tokyo, the new Leaf Nismo RC blows away the old car in terms of performance. With two 120-kW electric motors, the Leaf Nismo RC has all-wheel drive and puts down 478 pound-feed of torque. It'll sprint from 0-62 miles per hour in a brisk 3.4 seconds. Nissan didn't disclose what battery the Nismo RC uses, or its capacity." reports Autoblog: "You can see the Leaf Nismo RC on display at Formula E Races around the world, as well as at other automotive events. Like the last car, we can expect the occasional shakedown at the track as well, as Nissan will want to show off what its electric cars are capable of."

MAZDA FAVORS INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINES OVER EVS

  • "There’s no denying that, generally speaking, electric cars are a significantly greener solution than ICE-powered vehicles. However, that statement largely depends on the ways of producing electric energy, which is varies in different regions of the world. With that said, Mazda believes internal combustion engines still make more sense in terms of CO2 emissions than EVs." according to Motor1.com editor Anthony Karr: "Speaking with CarAdvice at the Los Angeles Auto Show, Ichiro Hirose, Mazda’s managing executive officer of powertrain development, revealed the company remains committed to gasoline engines and ICEs will continue to be its main focus."

  • He said: "When we think about the goal of CO2 reductions, I think there are still more regions that ICE is a better fit, so I think for the time being we should still focus on ICE."
