Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Monday 10th December 2018. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through EV story today so you don’t have to.

Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.

VW’S NEW U.S. CEO: THE TIPPING POINT ON EVS IS ALREADY HERE

  • "Some executives at major automakers continue to insist that electric cars remain years away from becoming a mainstream reality—and that it’s harder to sell them than traditional vehicles with gas tanks and tailpipes. Volkswagen of America’s new CEO, Scott Keogh, is most definitely not one of them. In a round-table interview with Green Car Reports and a few other news outlets this past week at the LA Auto Show, Keogh made clear that it will be ready for the millions of mass-market electric vehicles VW intends to produce." reports Bengt at Green Car Reports: "According to Keogh, the reason Tesla is at the top of the sales charts is that, no matter what the price or market segment, the automotive business is driven by what’s new"
  • Scott Keogh said: "There’s no debate if you climb into one of these vehicles, it feels like you’re driving the future. If you want to launch a marketing campaign, you want to target new customers, and it’s ‘come drive the future’—well a lot of people will listen up and tune into that. I’ve seen it with products, and I see it happening here. I’m a firm believer, and the reason it’s going to happen is because they’re going to feel they’re driving the future, driving what’s next—and that is a universal truth of consumer goods.”

HYUNDAI, KIA ECO-FRIENDLY CAR SALES JUMP 2.1-FOLD THIS YEAR

  • "Sales of eco-friendly cars made by Hyundai Motor Co. and its sister company Kia Motors Corp. jumped 2.1-fold in the first 11 months of this year, on strong domestic and overseas demand, industry data showed Sunday." according to the Korea Herald: "The two flagship companies of Hyundai Motor Group, the world's fifth largest automotive conglomerate in terms of sales, reported selling 257,861 conventional hybrid electric vehicles, plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, pure electric vehicles and fuel cell electric vehicles. At present, Hyundai and Kia have six HEV, four PHEV, five EV and one FCEV models in their lineups, for a total of 16 environmentally friendly vehicles. The companies said that the spike in EVs comes as demand for electric versions of Hyundai's Kona and Kia's Niro has picked up pace."

PININFARINA’S ‘SUPER-SUV’ TO PINCH EV TECH FROM RIVIAN

  • "Automobili Pininfarina will partner up with new US start-up, Rivian, to develop a family of SUVs, including a pure-electric 745kW FP1 that will rival the Lamborghini Urus." says Motoring.com.au: "According to Autocar India, who broke the story less than two weeks after Rivian unveiled its RT1 ute and R1S SUV, Pininfarina has switched technology suppliers from Rimac to Rivian for its next SUV. Pininfarina is believed to be well under way into the development of its PF0 — the company’s wilder pure-electric hypercar with Croation hypercar maker Rimac supplying electric motors, battery technology and control modules."

MUSK SAYS TESLA ARE WORKING ON AUTOPILOT THROUGH ROUNDABOUTS

  • "Elon Musk tweeted about their Autopilot development, explaining that traffic lights, stop signs and roundabouts are all items being tested right now. As Tesla vehicles go about understanding the world around them in an effort to navigate on behalf of the occupants, understanding and being able to cope with these complex environments, is key to reaching full autonomy." according to TechAU.

  • Elon said: "If you have a Tesla built in past 2 years, definitely try Navigate on Autopilot. It will blow your mind. Automatically passes slow cars & takes highway interchanges & off-ramps. Already testing traffic lights, stop signs & roundabouts in development software. Your Tesla will soon be able to go from your garage at home to parking at work with no driver input at all. Full self-driving option is required with the Tesla designed hardware 3 computer. This is a simple plug in replacement for the NVidia computer, but has over 10X the image processing ability."

EVO: NEW AUDI E-TRON REVIEW

  • Three out of Five stars is hardly a ringing endorsement
  • "You’ll pay £71,490 for an entry-level e-tron, although this amount drops by £3500 if you take into account the Government’s plug-in grant. At the other end of the scale there’s the limited run £82,240 Launch Edition, which comes with all the equipment under the sun, and more. Starting at £63,495 is the Jaguar i-Pace, which can’t match the Audi for practicality or space, but is far sharper to drive. Prices rise to £74,445 for the flagship HSE model. The Tesla Model X gets distinctive gullwing rear doors and a seven-seat option, but with prices starting at £79,150 it’s a more expensive proposition than either of its smaller rivals. If a pure electric proposition doesn’t quite fit into your lifestyle but you like the idea of some zero emissions running, then the Porsche Cayenne E-hybrid is worth consideration. It gives up to 27 miles of electric range, but with the back-up of a 3-litre V6 petrol. It also rivals the i-Pace as an SUV that’s decent to drive. At £68,423 it undercuts the Audi too."

TESLA HAD “FARADAY” AS A BACKUP NAME

  • "In a few informative tweets on Saturday evening, Tesla co-founder and CEO Elon Musk revealed some trivia about the company’s naming history: “Faraday” was the alternative name proposed for the electric vehicle manufacturer before “Tesla Motors” was purchased for $75,000. A man named Brad Siewert had filed for the mark in 1994 and maintained its registration until the sale to Musk’s company was made in 2004." reports AstroJane at Teslarati: "Also revealed in subsequent tweets was Musk’s lack of enthusiasm for the TeslaMotors.com website domain, citing an arduous $11 million dollar process lasting over ten years to acquire Tesla.com. A quick search for “Tesla” in the US trademark database alone reveals hundreds of goods and services paying tribute to the scientific genius of Nikola Tesla. With the mark tied into so many products and services, the wonder isn’t why someone would hold onto the domain name, but rather why the specific domain was such an issue given the car company’s market presence. Perhaps, it was simply the principle of the matter."
