Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Friday 14th December 2018. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through EV story today so you don’t have to.

Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.

And welcome to the Patreon gang BRUCE MILLER joining us a new Producer of the show.

“FASTCHARGE”: ULTRA-FAST CHARGING TECHNOLOGY

  • How fast is fast enough when it comes to charging? Not fast enough is the answer!
  • The prototype of a charging station with a capacity of up to 450 kW was inaugurated in Jettingen-Scheppach, Bavaria. At this ultra-fast charging station, electrically powered research vehicles created as part of the project are able to demonstrate charging times of less than three minutes for the first 100 kilometres of range or 15 minutes for a full charge (10-80 % State of Charge (SOC)).
  • The research project “FastCharge” is being run by an industry consortium under the leadership of the BMW Group; its other members are Allego GmbH, Phoenix Contact E-Mobility GmbH, Dr. Ing. h. c. F. Porsche AG and Siemens AG.
  • The increase in charging capacity up to 450 kW – between three and nine times the capacity available at DC fast-charging stations to date – enables a substantial reduction in charging times.
  • “FastCharge” is investigating the technical requirements that need to be met in terms of both vehicles and infrastructure in order to be able to tap into these extremely high charging capacities.
  • In order to meet the demands of fast charging at high capacity, cooled HPC (High Power Charging) cables made by Phoenix Contact are used, which are fully CCS-compatible. The cooling fluid is an environment-friendly mixture of water and glycol, allowing the cooling circuit to be half-open. This makes maintenance comparatively straightforward as compared to hermetically sealed systems that use oil, e.g. in terms of refilling the cooling fluid.
  • The Porsche research vehicle with a net battery capacity of approx. 90 kWh achieves a charging capacity of more than 400 kW, thereby allowing charging times of less than three minutes for the first 100 km of range.

HONDA WIRELESS VEHICLE-TO-GRID

  • Honda will debut its Wireless Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G), a bi-directional energy management system.
  • Recognizing that batteries in vehicles also can be used as storage to help balance supply and demand, Honda EV owners will be able to participate in the V2G program and receive compensation from utility operators who benefit from the use of Honda EVs to balance the grid's energy supply.
  • Unlike charging with a conventional charging cable, the system enables noncontact charging and discharging of an EV by parking on a charging pad, which makes the charging experience more convenient for customers. Honda has developed this Wireless Vehicle-to-Grid with WiTricity, the industry pioneer in wireless power transfer over distance. The Honda Wireless Vehicle-to-Grid can help eliminate the gap between supply and demand of electricity by charging EVs when power generation is greater than power consumption, and by discharging electricity from EVs to the power grid when consumption is greater than generation.

TESLA’S MATTE BLACK SEMI PROTOTYPE MAKES RARE APPEARANCE

  • Simon Alvarez at Teslarati has spotted the Semi Truck being juiced up: "This time around, the all-electric long hauler was sighted pulling a trailer at the 40-stall Kettleman City Supercharger, located between San Francisco and Los Angeles. The matte black Tesla Semi prototype was photographed by Tesla enthusiast James Douma, who noted that he spotted the vehicle on Wednesday afternoon. In a conversation with Teslarati, James stated that the vehicle seemed to be traveling alone. As Tesla conducts road tests of the Semi, though, the company has been adopting a temporary charging solution for the vehicle, using a series of Supercharger stalls connected to a hub, which is, in turn, connected to the all-electric truck."

TESLA MODEL 3 PERFORMANCE SET LAGUNA SECA RECORD

  • "Now, we have yet another EV record for Laguna Seca" according to Autoblog: "This one comes from driver Cameron Rogers in a modified Tesla Model 3 Performance. As you can see in the video [link below] he managed to make it around the course in a white-knuckled but eerily quiet 1:41.28. That makes it the fastest production EV lap, though the Model S still holds the record for a completely unmodified EV.

U.S. TESLA SALES IN NOVEMBER 2018 UP BY 592%

  • Mark Kane at InsideEVs.com reports: "In November, Tesla sold in the U.S. approximately 24,600 electric cars (InsideEVs’ estimation), which is the second-best monthly result ever. Annual growth rate hit a remarkable 592%! Our estimates stand at: Model 3 – 18,650. Model X – 3,200. Model S – 2,750. Total: 24,600 (up 592%)"

RELAXATION OF DIESEL EMISSION LIMITS WAS ILLEGAL

  • "The new generation of so-called “cleaner” diesel vehicles can be banned from Madrid, Paris and Brussels after a ruling by European justices." reports The Guardian in the UK: "City authorities can now stop Euro 6 diesel vehicles from entering their cities. The European court of justice has overruled a decision by the European commission to allow new diesel vehicles to emit higher levels of nitrogen dioxide. The justices said the original limit of 80mg/km must be maintained and that a 2016 relaxation of car emission limits was illegal. The three cities took the European commission to court over its proposal to allow a 168mg/km limit following pressure from national governments. EU law had previously set a 80mg/km limit. The decision means plans by the three European cities to ban new diesel vehicles can go ahead."

FLEETS OFFERED FULL FINANCE PACKAGES FOR SMART EV CHARGERS

  • "EV chargepoint reseller Raw Charging has teamed up with ChargePoint and Close Brothers Asset Finance to offer full finance packages for smart electric vehicle chargers." says Fleetworld: "The move enables fleets to have smart electric vehicle chargers installed in their car parks and spread the cost over five to seven years through funding from Close Brothers Asset Finance. Solutions are supplied from the ChargePoint range and offer software tools such as power and energy management, as well as an web portal that empowers businesses to more effectively manage both the time and cost of charging."

CHILE IS WORLD #2 FOR ELECTRIC BUSES

  • And finally a story sent to me today by EV advocate and YouTuber The Plugseeker: "A massive cargo ship docked in the Chilean port of San Antonio at the end of November. It carried it its belly the first 100 electric buses from China that Chileans hope will revolutionise their public transport system." reported the Sydney MOrning Herand today: "The operation and maintenance costs of an electric bus are also around 70 per cent less than those of a diesel engine, according to Chile's Ministry of Transport.
  • Chilean President Sebastian Pinera: "Chile will be second only to China as a nation with the greatest quantity of electric buses in the world.” The Chilean capital will have 200 in total, the government said. The 100 that recently arrived were manufactured by Chinese firm BYD. If the present fleets of buses and taxis spread across 22 Latin American cities were replaced by electric vehicles today, by 2030 almost $US64 billion ($88 billion) in fuel would have been saved, and 300 million tonnes less of carbon dioxide equivalent would have been pumped into the air, according to a UN study."
