Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Monday 17th December 2018. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through EV story today so you don’t have to.
Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.
DETAILS REVEALED FROM VW I.D. SOUTH AFRICA PRESS TRIP
- VW still saying it will costs equivalent to diesel
- RWD (I guess option of AWD) but still a big boot, and no torque steer
- Two battery packs - 206 and 312 miles on WLTP
- Permanent magnet motor, as you'd find on Model 3 (Top Gear magazine says Tesla uses induction motors, perhaps relying on what they were told? You only find them on S & X and in the front of the Dual Motor Model 3's)
- Brake pedal for regen - no flappy paddles
- Option of D or B mode, to change how regen works
- Top Speed 100mph
- Battery can take 125kW - woah! 11kW onboard charger
- Central screen on a mount, not flush, and a big HUD
- Drive selected by a twist knob up top, think BMW i3
- No frunk, just electronics and A/C
ANOTHER PREDICTABLE DRAG RACE RESULT
- The YouTube drag race has become a bit of cliche these days. Several middle aged men take three or four supercars, do three minutes of build up, see which one is quickest of the quarter mile and everyone is astonished the winner is a Tesla.
- "It is absolutely mind-boggling that a super SUV that can run the quarter mile in 12.9 seconds is considered the slow one." says Jalopnik: "It wasn’t long ago that some of the best sports cars on the market struggled to hit 12-second quarters. Mercedes has a new G-klasse 63 AMG to battle with, and Lamborghini’s new Urus is incredibly quick. Both make use of twin-turbocharged V8 gasoline engines. The AMG’s 5.5-liter makes 577 horsepower, while the Lambo’s 4-liter makes 641 ponies. The Tesla Model X P100D is a known quantity."
- You know what happens next.

NIO ES6 ELECTRIC CROSSOVER SPECS, IMAGES & VIDEO FROM WORLD DEBUT
- "NIO delivered so far more than 9,700 NIO ES8, but after the recent unveiling of the NIO ES6 we should expect a lot more from the Chinese manufacturer, which seems to aspire to be the Chinese-Tesla." says Mark Kane for InsideEVs.com.
- NIO ES6 Performance spec:
- 70 kWh or 84 kWh battery (liquid cooled, NCM811 cells, 170 Wh/kg)
- 510 km (317 miles) of range (NEDC) with 84 kWh battery or 430 km (267 miles) with 70 kWh battery
- dual motor all-wheel drive
- 0-100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.7 seconds
- system output: 400 kW (160 kW permanent magnet motor in the front and 240 kW induction motor in the rear) and 725 Nm of torque
- top speed of 200 km/h (124 mph)

MERCEDES EQS COMING IN 2020 WITH AROUND 400 HP
- "Even though Mercedes has also previewed a small electric hatchback along the lines of the A-Class, it looks like its second pure EV will be the EQ S flagship." according to Auto Evolution: "This model has been very reclusive, only doing laboratory testing, but it appears the German magazine Auto Bild has some insider information. According to them, the EQ S's name hints at its flagship status, even though there are no plans to get rid of the gasoline and diesel-power S-Class models. And as far as the size is concerned, the electric sedan will sit somewhere between the E- and S-Class, with a footprint similar to the CLS."

CALIFORNIA PUSHES FOR 100 PERCENT ZERO-EMISSION BUSES BY 2040
- "California air quality regulators voted on Friday to require that transit buses have zero emissions beginning in 2029, another step by the liberal-leaning state that sets it apart from the environmental policies of the Trump administration. " says Autoblog: "The California Air Resources Board voted unanimously on the proposal to ramp up the use of battery electric or fuel-cell buses until 2029, at which point all new transit buses will have to be zero-emission vehicles. By 2040, California intends its fleet of buses to be 100-percent emissions free. According to CARB, emissions from the transportation sector accounts for 40 percent of climate-changing gas emissions and 80-90 percent of smog-forming pollutants. CARB says that's equivalent to taking 4 million cars off the road."
