Coming up on today’s show…

Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Tuesday 1st January 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and here’s your look forward to the next 12 months.

Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.

Welcome to Patreon 151. And the second Premium Partner of the show. I've been chatting to Paul Hussey on Facebook for a while, and regular listeners will know one of my EV obsessions is getting people to TRY one, and hiring an EV being the perfect gateway. Well that's what Paul does with electricmotoring.net for those travelling into Chicago. I want to get Paul on show soon because not only does his company hire out Tesla's, but you can even stay in a Tesla-ready lake house with solar power and soon, a Tesla Powerwall.  You can find out more at electricmotoring.net

Welcome to our prediction show for 2019. This will be a combination of what we know will happen, a few serious predictions based on me adding 2 and 2 getting 5, and some outrageous guesswork for a bit of fun.

VW - after years of announcements, it's time to prove you can make EVs at scale. The ID will be on sale in 2019 for 2020 deliveries.

AUDI - e-tron should be weeks away, following a software delay. Europe in Feb and March, and USA in April to July.

PORSCHE - the Taycan is built on a VW platform which could be used for the Audi e-tron GT or even Bentley, but first to market will be the Porsche. They have been spending a long time on the track. Range is being dismissed in favour or charge speed, the phrase splash'n'dash will be appropriate!

BMW - i3 without the Rex will be the last version of that car, with the 42kWh battery for the same price. Of course the i3S will sell well. iX3 will have their 5th gen technology. The MINI electric will be built here in the UK in Oxford and the latest spy shots show it's almost fully baked. All these premium brands will continue to be priced at a premium.

DAIMLER - Mercedes Benz EQC is their first SUV electric. We know the drivetrains are being made now. The issue for both the e-tron and EQC will be real world 200 mile ranges, against the Korean cars doing 2509 with smaller batteries and the Model 3 with insanely good efficiency.

NISSAN LEAF - the 60kWh car is coming, the e-Plus. Delayed because of boardroom legal wranglings. I hope it gets an update under the skin more than just the battery. And, keep the battery cool!

RENAULT ZOE - 40,000 sold in Europe in 2018 is nothing to ignore. Will be updated, i think the battery will stay at 41kWh but it will get the CCS plug rather than the current AC-only chameleon charger. That makes it much more versatile.

KIA & HYUNDAI - the KONA and the eNiro will go on sale in EV friendly state in the USA. Large 64kWh batteries and 72kW charging on CCS Combo plugs.  And the Kia SOUL EV coming with 64kWh battery. The IONIQ will get a larger battery, but not quite 64kWh. I think 40-45kWh.

PSA - electriying their upmarket DS brand

HONDA URBAN EV - cute as a button, seen testing in pics, but confirmed to be a premium price.

TESLA – A year of consolidation and announcements

MODEL 3 - 2,000 a week turned into 7,000 a week. 10k the goal. That's half a million a year!

35k model 3 won't happen - it will be with premium interior which makes it $40k. Model Y will be unveiled - will reservations open? In the past Tesla has used a product launch to generate instant revenue, but now they're profitable, will they change? Will they allow reservations to build hype? it has been over a year since a grand Elon & Tesla piece of theatre - Nov 17 for the Semi and Roadster . Production will start on on model 3 in china. They will announce that the model y will start production simultaneously, in Giga 1 and Shanghai

TESLA PICKUP - just as the Roadster was a bonus unveiling, will it be the same for a finished pickup?

MODEL S REFRESH - surely it has to happen in 2019. to align the look, and although the UI is the same feel, one screen size would surely make the job for the developers and coders more efficient? or does the screen in the S and X need to be bigger to be premium? Making premium more premium - a bigger battery, to stay ahead of the others who are making announcements. 2170 cells for the S and X? 120 or 125kWh?

TESLA SUPERCHARGER V3 - should have been in 2018 - ahem Elon time - what speed will it go to? Latest chargers are 350kW. We heard of a new 475kW charger in 2018 too. JB has said that's too fast when you trade off all the compromises, and 200-ish should do it. When i'm on a long journey, i can't turn around quicker than 15...so park up, plug in, dash into services for a bathroom break and back to the car. get a coffee and it's at least 20. take it leisurely and you can easily stop for 30 mins without reaslising.

TESLA SEMI - a year of testing, building the production line, early releases by end of 2019

RIVIAN - A quiet year following huge hype of the R1s and R1t

JAGUAR I-PACE - out and on sale now, beating all it's competitors to market. not by days, by MONTHS! Very luxurious, perfect for the Jaguar brand, poor efficiency.

REGUALTORY - debate over self driving will hit the mainstream with politicians wanting their say over regulating level 3 4 and 5. start with a crazy low speed, like 10-15 mph. side cameras for mirrors will be allowed in more countries.

CHARGERS - 4 networks in Europe. i'm impressed with FastNed, IONITY has picked up pace, once a day. 350kW charging will be the headline. Tesla will dramatically increase their superchargers but also push on with destination chargers - places you're at for 2-3 hours with free electricity, to ease peressure on rapid charging. We know CCS for european superchargers.

CHINESE BRANDS HEADING TO THE US - i'll name NIO here, with an outside chance on byton. and BYD for more commercial vehicles.

RACING - this year FOrmula E will get more attention, along with Jaguar I-PACE. And electric rallycross too.

And honourable mention for the Volvo XC40 electric.

HOME STORAGE - powerwall will be produced in better numbers. frustrating for installers who have been promised jam tomorrow.

SOLAR- tesla solar tiles will be produced at scale, and pricing of regular ones is dropping

ICE'ING - will get worse before it gets better as long as chargers are put in conveneient locations. make it inconveneient! add overstay fees. i predict the UK will introduce green plates

DEALERS - they don't want to sell EVs.
