Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Wednesday 2nd January 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through all today’s EV stories and picked out the news you need.

Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.

A very warm welcome to our latest Patreon Premium Partner Brad, who joined up on New Years Day! I've reached out to Brad on Patreon and am looking forward to hearing more about why he wants to support the show.

And that follow Paul joining us from electricmotoring.net - I introduced him to you yesterday but I know people sometimes miss a show. This month we'll be talking about hiring EVs so I want to hear from you, have you ever used a car hire or Tesla hire service? What was your impression? Email me hello@evnewsdaily.com - so electricmotoring.net is Tesla hire for Chicago and the surrounding area, perfect if you’re local or visiting. And I asked Paul how he ended up with such an awesome URL, he said he was inspired by one of my personal favs, Ryan's Ride The Lightning Tesla Podcast and he signs off "happy electric motoring". I thought that was a cool story.

TESLA MODEL 3 SALES SHATTER RECORDS

  • "Never before has a single plug-in electric car sold at this high level of volume in a single month." says Eric Loveday at InsideEVs.com: "InsideEVs estimates that Tesla sold an astounding 25,250 Model 3 in December 2018 (*this figure doesn’t include Canada). That’s a new all-time high for the Model 3 and the single highest monthly figure for a plug-in electric car ever. In December 2017, Tesla sold 1,060 Model 3. The YTD tally is in now too for the Model 3. That figure for all of 2018 checks in at stands at 139,782. Cumulative sales now stand at 141,546."
  • com also has some context on the big picture number: "During 2018, Tesla delivered roughly 245,240 electric cars (up almost 138% year-over-year): Model 3: 145,846 YTD. Model S: 50,676 YTD. Model X: 48,718 YTD"

  • And the news kept coming today: "On average, 986 cars were delivered per day. The cumulative number of S/X/3 delivered since 2012 increased to over 532,000"

  • Tesla themselves said: "“There remain significant opportunities to continue to grow Model 3 sales by expanding to international markets, introducing lower-priced variants and offering leasing. International deliveries in Europe and China will start in February 2019. Expansion of Model 3 sales to other markets, including with a right-hand drive variant, will occur later in 2019.”

  • And in boardrooms around the world those numbers will be painful for some to read. If Tesla can do it, the others were capable of it all along. 10 years ago any other manufacturer could have decided to go this route on EVs and saved the planet plenty of emissions along the way.

AS TAX CREDIT REDUCES TESLA DROPS PRICES

  • Moving beyond the success of Q4, we are taking steps to partially absorb the reduction of the federal EV tax credit (which, as of January 1st, dropped from $7,500 to $3,750). Starting today, we are reducing the price of Model S, Model X and Model 3 vehicles in the U.S. by $2,000. Customers can apply to receive the $3,750 federal tax credit for new deliveries starting on January 1, 2019, and may also be eligible for several state and local electric vehicle and utility incentives, which range up to $4,000. Combined with the reduced costs of maintenance and of charging a Tesla versus paying for gas at the pump – which can result in up to $100 per month or more in savings – this means our vehicles are even more affordable than similarly priced gasoline vehicles.

  • So that's now an upfront saving, rather than paying the money out and then not paying it as tax in a years time. Plus is show they are financially strong enough, and profitable enough, to make such a bold move.

NORWAY EVS CHARGE TO NEW RECORD

  • "Almost a third of new cars sold in Norway last year were pure electric, a new world record as the country strives to end sales of fossil-fueled vehicles by 2025." according to a new Reuters report today on Autoblog: "In a bid to cut carbon emissions and air pollution, Norway exempts battery-driven cars from most taxes and offers benefits such as free parking and charging points to hasten a shift from diesel and petrol engines. The independent Norwegian Road Federation said on Wednesday that electric cars rose to 31.2 percent of all sales last year from 20.8 percent in 2017 and just 5.5 percent in 2013, while sales of petrol and diesel cars plunged."

USED EV PRICES ARE HEADING UP

  • "According to J.D. Power and Associates, 2015 Leaf wholesale prices are about 1 percent higher than they were a year ago" reports David Muller for Autonews: "2015 Nissan Leafs have retained 30 percent of the originally equipped sticker price this year, up from 23 percent last year, according to J.D. Power, which focuses on 3-year-old vehicles when calculating retention values. Other used EVs are showing a similar trend in prices or retained value improvement. According to Black Book, which weighs 2016 models to gauge three-year retention, the retention value of used EVs this year is about 38 percent, vs. 21 percent a year ago."

  • I should probably ask my friends over at MYEV.com if they track prices. I'm sure even if they do, it might be confidential data, but how interesting would it be to know the average used sale price by year and model, and how it trends. I'll smile nicely at them!

CCS CLOSES OUT 2018 WITH ROUGHLY 6,000 DC FAST CHARGERS IN EUROPE

  • "More than 2,000 CCS Combo DC fast chargers were installed in the past year in Europe, which means that there are now over 50% more places to charge CCS compatible cars." reports Mark for InsideEVs. Actually i want to clarify, if that charging stations or locations? "According to the CCS Charge Map, overall there are now 5,981 CCS chargers in Europe (compared to about 8,000 CHAdeMO) and new ones are installed an at average pace of 5.6 per day (compared to the long-term average of 3.5 per day since mid-2014). Most of the CCS chargers are 20 to 50 kW, but most recently we note growing number of 100, 175 or even 350 kW chargers. A significant characteristic of CCS Combo locations are that they are often also multi-standard chargers, with both CHAdeMO and/or 3-phase AC type 2 along for the ride."

POSSIBLE F1 DEMO FOR ROBORACE

  • "Roborace’s inaugural season is due to commence next spring, with its ‘Season Alpha’ calendar running partially alongside FE as both categories are all-electric." says Scott Mitchell in a report for motorsport.com: "However, Roborace CEO and 2016/17 FE champion Lucas di Grassi told Motorsport.com that the series is not restricted to running alongside its electric cousin. He said he would be happy to work with other categories, including F1, to showcase technology and boost its profile."

PININFARINA BATTISTA SHOWS ITS SLEEK NOSE IN NEW TEASER

  • "With the zero-emissions era upon us, it means we’ll be seeing more and more electric cars across the automotive spectrum. This EV assault will include not just mainstream models such as the Volkswagen I.D., but also fully fledged hypercars like the Battista from Automobili Pininfarina. Attempting to succeed where the Audi R8 E-Tron has failed, the all-electric machine formerly known as PF0 is back in a new teaser image to get us all excited about its highly anticipated premiere." according to Motor1.com: "Automobili Pininfarina has been nice enough to share plenty of technical specifications in the build-up to the official reveal in March. With 1,900 horsepower on tap, you’re looking at the most powerful production car to ever come from Italy, one that will top out at 250 mph (402 kph) and will cover more than 300 miles (483 kilometers) before running out of juice."

BUICK GOES BIG ON PLUG-IN VEHICLES IN CHINA

  • "Buick is going to have two NEV (new energy vehicle) models code-named K226 and K228 locally produced in China with a total annual capacity of 88,000 units, according to local media. Meanwhile, the annual capacity of the Buick Excelle (code-named K211) will be decreased by 88,000 units." according to Gasgoo for InsideEVs: "The K228, positioned as a new-generation BEV coupe, is Buick’s first BEV model. With a planned annual capacity of 40,000 units, the BEV model is expected to hit the market in 2019. According to relevant reports, the K228 is equipped with the Buick-specific charger with a variety of charging modes."

FARADAY FUTURE GETS OPPORTUNITY TO REBUILD

  • "Embattled electric car start-up Faraday Future is free to conduct debt and equity financing after it settled a dispute with mainland China property conglomerate Evergrande Group, a key investor, on Monday." reports SCMP.com: "Faraday had targeted December 2018 for the production of the FF91, a luxury electric sport-utility vehicle model, and planned to deliver the first batch in the first quarter this year. At the end of 2017, Evergrande...said it would invest US$2 billion in Faraday over three years for a 45 per cent stake, bailing out the ailing carmaker. But the two companies have been embroiled in a series of disputes over the past several months.
