Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Thursday 3rd January 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through all today’s EV stories and picked out the news you need.

Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.

Welcome to the newest member of our gang, and the latest Executive Producer of the podcast. Yes I'm talking to you ALEXANDER FRANK! Thank you for your support, I promise to work harder to promote clear air and the fun of driving an EV.

DECEMBER PLUG IN SALES

  • It's the start of the month so I'm inevitably talking about the InsideEVs.com Plug In Sales Scorecard.
  • So let's get this out there - December 2018 was the best ever month for U.S. EV sales in history. 45,466 and counting. That easily tips us over the 350,000 round number for the year. 350,000!
  • A reminder of yesterday's show, and indeed the benchmark for all others, the Model 3: "Tesla Model 3 deliveries set a new record in December, at 25,250 sold in the U.S. based on our estimates and the automaker’s quarterly report"
  • We'll start with GM: "For the fourth quarter, Chevrolet reported 6,212 Chevy Bolt EVs and 5,063 Chevy Volts were sold. According to our research, GM sold 1,412 Bolt EVs and 1,058 Volt plug-ins in the U.S. this December."
  • As for the Nissan LEaf: "LEAF deliveries are up a nicely, at 1,667. In fact, this is the best U.S. number for the 2018 Nissan LEAF to date."
  • Eric Loveday writes: "Looking at YTD figures for the LEAF we note that cumulative sales for all of 2018 stand at 14,715, which is a decent improvement the total of 11,230 sold in 2017. But still, that’s a disappointment if you consider that in the best of times (2014 ) LEAF sales hit upwards of 30,000 units in a single year."
  • What about the plug-in car from the company which runs as here in the UK, where the Prime isn't on sale, saying they're the EV company which believe in NOT plugging in: "According to Toyota, Prius Prime deliveries in December reached an impressive 2,759." It takes the yearly second spot, with 27,595 ahead of the Model S 26,100 for the year and Model X 25,745 for the year.
  • What about a car i rarely talk about, the Honda Clarity: "We’re happy to report that Honda sold a total of 2,857 Clarity vehicles in the U.S. in December. Our research indicates that 2,787 of these sales were plug-in hybrids. This is the car’s best showing of all-time by leaps and bounds!"
  • Finishing off, the I-PACE is 223. Again estimated, in the comments section Stephen says: "Jaguar is also not reporting any individual model numbers for the U.S., let alone the I-Pace." Also Jaguar I-Pace sold 2,621 in The Netherlands in December, so clearly stock is being sold in certain places first.
  • And congratulations to Hyundai for sales last month of their new Nexo Fual Cell - they sold one!

MORE BMW IX3 SPY SHOTS POP UP ONE YEAR BEFORE LAUNCH

  • "The upcoming BMW iX3 is currently undergoing various road tests to be ready for market launch around 2020 as the first BMW based on the new 5th generation drivetrain." reports Make Kane for InsideEVs: "The iX3 is still partially camouflaged, but in general, it seems that BMW is following a similar route as Mercedes-Benz with its EQC. The iX3 will be only slightly different from the X3 on the exterior."

TESLA PATENT HINTS AT MORE RELIABLE BATTERIES THROUGH ‘DYNAMIC’ MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

  • Simon Alvarez at Teslarati says: "Considering Tesla’s reputation for never staying still, though, it is almost certain that the company’s batteries will improve over time. This was mentioned by Tesla’s President of Automotive Jerome Guillen to CNBC last November, when he noted that the company’s technology consistently evolves." and now there's a patent which points towards even more development: "Tesla’s patent describes what could be dubbed as a redundant battery management system, comprising a first client coupled within a multi-channel, bi-directional and daisy-chained communication loop. The electric car maker also outlined a method for identifying a failure location within a battery management system. Ultimately, Tesla notes that these systems will result in what could only be described as “dynamic redundancy” across its battery management systems. This, of course, could foster a new generation of battery packs that are more reliable than the company’s already stellar batteries."

CHINA TO CUT SHORT-RANGE EV SUBSIDIES

  • "The Chinese government has announced plans to lower many of their electric vehicle subsidies for the year 2019 by about 30% compared to the 2018 regulations, with the goal to completely end these subsidies in 2020. However, EVs with a range over 300 km will receive increased subsidies." according to Chris Randall for electrive: "Starting in 2019, electric vehicles with a range of less than 150 km will no longer received subsidies, while midsize and large EVs with a 400 km range were granted a 10% boost to their subsidies."

CHINESE TESLA MODEL 3 SPOTTED WITH PROPER GB/T CONNECTOR

  • On Twitter today Kelvin Yang posted: “Model 3 with China GB charge ports spotted running around, likely testing compatibility with public charging stations”
  • Back in 2017 Tesla added the Chinese GB/T port alongside the Tesla charging port to the Model S and X. And now cars are testing in China with the added ports on the Model 3.
  • So with Europe and now CHina, will the U.S. get the CCS Combo port?

TESLA MID RANGE GETS MORE RANGE!

  • OK so it's not a lot, but 4 miles is 4 miles! Not that Tesla want us to talk about battery sizes now, but it's a 62kWh pack. On the EPA website the 260 mile figure is supplemented with “Combined range voluntarily lowered to 260 miles.”. So they've not changed anything but rather increased the range by not lowering it. The have done the same with the Long Range battery with single and dual motors, they list 310 miles for both, even though they differ.
