A message from Raj Badwal - starting a new venture working to install charge points, so I said I'd give him a little mention. "I'm based in East Midlands. I don't want to limit myself so just my area. I'm looking for companies that are thinking about installing them in their staff carparks and also pubs and restaurants etc." Email me and I’ll pass on the details!

SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA EDISON INCREASES PLUG-IN VEHICLE REBATE

  • California utility Southern California Edison has increased the rebate available to customers who purchase or lease a new or used plug-in vehicle on or after January 1st, 2019 through its Clean Fuel Reward Program. The increase raises the maximum funds available through the impressive rebate from $450 to $1,000 for 2019 and stacks on top of any existing federal, state, and local rebates that may be available to customers." according to Kyle Field from Clean Technica: "Impressively, the rebate applies equally to new and used plug-in vehicles which serves to make plug-in vehicles more affordable for customers at all price points in the purchasing spectrum. Offering rebates to buyers of used vehicles helps to offset the incremental costs that come with purchasing an electric vehicle, including things like purchasing a Level 2 electric vehicle (EV) service equipment (EVSE) or to offset the purchase price of the vehicle."

WILL GM FOLLOW TESLA'S EXAMPLE AND OFFER DISCOUNTS?

  • General Motors hit the 200,000 total electric vehicle sales figure, which will now trigger a phase-out of the $7,500 federal tax credit over the next 15 months. Reuters has confirmed this with GM sources." says CarBuzz: "That tax credit will reduce to $3,750 in April, and then lower to $1,875 in October for another six months. By April 2020 the credit will be gone entirely. It’s important to know that GM did not sell 200,000 EVs, specifically the Chevrolet Bolt, in 2018 but rather this figure represents all EV sales since 2010. [Tesla] just announced it will cut prices on its vehicles by $2,000. Will GM decide to do the same six months from now?"

PREDICTIONS

ALEXANDER FRANK - EXEC PRODUCER

I predict that we will see a lot of articles in the German press regarding electric vehicles and the shortfall of what German automakers are currently offering as soon as the Model 3 becomes a common sight on German roads. Maybe even some strong words from politicians and a shift in attitude towards the future of legislation.

BRIAN THOMPSON

Lots of electric Semi trucks and busses on the road, no preference as to manufacturer. More municipalities banning massive fossil engines from their interior.  I think model Y will be produced at gigafactory one. During our tour of the gigafactory the south half the building we were not privy too.... I believe they are already assembling the latest and greatest auto production line, evolving from everything they have learned from the production lines of the S, X, and 3.  There were hundreds of engineers working away on their computers. I'm thinking some might be heavily involved on projects other then battery cell design.

MARK GAUDIE

The Tesla Model 3 will be the biggest selling EV in Europe by a long way. I don’t think anything else competes with Tesla currently in today’s market.

DC VARIOUS VIDS

  • Cost per pack at cell level will drop but not by much.
  • Any such savings will not filter down to the buying public.
  • Some fool somewhere, will copywrite the term ‘EV’ and or ‘electric vehicle’.
  • Nissan will continue down the passive BMS abyss. Thus shooting themselves in the other foot. Which in turn, will hamper their forward progress.
  • Having shot both feet. Nissan may once again be on their way, to shooting themselves in the head. And may soon be looking for another buy-out partner. Perhaps PSA would do the honours this time.
  • VW group partners will continue to promise more and deliver less.
  • EV News Daily, will go from strength to strength and good luck to you.

HOWDY YT

Looking at the way Japanese car manufacturers are dragging their feet, it is very likely they will lose out in the EV revolution.

Worse still, they are investing more R&D resources in hydrogen, fuel cell and hybrid tech instead of EV and battery.

DAVID WEBB

My prediction for 2019, is a rebirth of DeLorean with EV powertrain.

D R-K

The first quarter of 2019 when Tesla begins to deliver cars to the EU and the advanced development of Gigafactory 3 in China will take Tesla to the next level.. followed by news that the $35,000 model will be able to be configured in April of 2019.

RAMBLER ANDY

1] Tesla Model 3 will become the biggest selling EV ever. That's hardly speculative though.

2] Tesla will buy a GM factory [or two, you never know].

3] The Jaguar XJ Electric will be worth waiting for, and I suspect that people will stop caring about its range because the charging infrastructure will start to become big enough whereby drivers will begin to stop worrying. Actually, the second half of that last prediction might be total pie in the sky, as there are not nearly enough Non-Tesla Rapid Chargers, and 12 months is a short time in transport paradigm shifting. 😁

4] One last Tesla prediction - The $35,000 Model 3 will become available worldwide, even in RHD. By the way, US$35K is currently £27770.05 [02/01/19]. Then take off the Govt rebate and that's a lot of electric car there. What's the betting we have to pay pounds for dollars though?

ROBERT

1 Tesla will buy a GM plant

2 Michigan will cave to Tesla to get a plant in the state.

3 A break out for charging networks, 50kw chargers will no longer be built.

  1. EU charging networks will jump to 150 kw chargers & the US networks will jump to 100 kw for new installed chargers.

5 Hyundai/Kia will build and operate 3 battery plants in partnership with suppliers.

6 GM will announce 2 new EV CUV/SUV to be produce for 2020

7 Mitsubishi will come out with the CA MIEV with the help of Nissan and Renault

GERRIT GOVAERTS

My prediction on the S and X : not only an interior refesh but maybe also a small exterior change with small aero improvements (vented front wheel wells like the M3) , more importantly switching the cells from imported (from Japan) 18650 to US produced 2170 and in a greatly improved pack (new patent) with a lot less wiring saving substantial weight . The top end S may see an increase in range in the low 340's . Performance versions may get Track mode just like the M3

GORDON LANG

I think the Model Y will not have falcon wing doors. It will be a sliding door that you'll find on a minivan. That is my prediction.

JARED SLUSSER - Static Ride EV. Temecula, CA

My prediction for 2019 is that we will see V2G rollout into the real world. I think we will see home charging points and cars that are capable of V2G, and utility companies moving beyond pilot programs to mass availability.

MAZ SHAR

Love the show and follow you on Twitter (EpicWinningMaz)! My prediction for this year is that pure electric cars sales in the UK will double totalling 30,000 - largely due to Model 3 entering UK, increased Kona production, eNiro, Leaf 60kWh plus the premium SUVs. I'm predicting 10,000 Model 3s will be sold in the UK!

PETE GLASS

2019 is going to be mainly a mark timing year. Small battery improvements in old models, Leaf, Zoe, i3, Soul.

The back end of the year will get the first delivery of the expected new models but they are really the story for 2020.

Some vapourware will get more concrete, some will evaporate completely!

One old giant manufacturer, no idea which, will surprise us with something they've been working on in secret that might actually deliver in 2020.

We'll get a promised timescale for the Tesla M-Y, but it will slip!

The big question is can Hyundai/Kia be able or even want to ramp up production of the Kona/Niro/Soul to meet the apparent demand. Can Chevy produce and move more Bolts?

JACK OAKLEY

Greetings from Pennsylvania! My 2019 EV Predication - General Motors introduces a small SUV based on the BOLT. Updated platform with all-wheel drive, available as a Buick or Cadillac first to justify the higher price point. 225 Mile range.

ANDREW JACOBS

I predict that  Volkswagen will announce another 5 concept EVs that will never go into production. It’s an old trick that Microsoft used to use. Announce a whole lot of features that you haven’t got yet in the hope of stopping sales of a rival product. I also think Tesla will have a surprise unveiling of a pick up truck when they unveil the model Y.

JON - BEARDY MCBEARDFACE

before the end of 2019 the UK and Europe will see an influx of Chinese EV’s. Both cheaper and medium priced vehicles. I think if that happens it will have an impact on EV pricing in general. Sadly £30,000 is not actually ‘affordable’. We need decent family sized EV’s for £15,000 to bring them into the mainstream IMHO. I know Dacia are promising to produce EV’s cheap like their current line up.....
