Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Monday 7th January 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I can find today, and picked out the ones I think you need to know about.

Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.

EXPERTS BELIEVE SALES OF COMBUSTION ENGINE CARS PEAKED IN 2018

  • "After speaking to specialists from the auto industry, Financial Times published a comprehensive report about the fossil-burning engine. Interestingly, several experts told the publication sales of ICE-powered vehicles peaked in 2018 which basically means it’s unlikely that more cars with ICEs will be sold within a year in the future." according to Anthony Karr for Motor1.com: "In 2019, global vehicle sales aren’t expected to decline as electric vehicles are expected to quadruple their market share to about 1.6 percent. Even if overall sales increase through the next 12 months, deliveries of ICE-powered vehicles will likely fall, say specialists."
  • Felipe Munoz, global automotive analyst for Jato Dynamics, told Financial Times: "We will probably see the peak of combustion engine car sales in 2018 based on global sales through October, plus estimates for November and December".

TESLA GIGAFACTORY GROUNDBREAKING: CHINESE MODEL 3 PRODUCTION ON TRACK

  • "Late Sunday evening, Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced that the automaker was hours away from an important event." reports Wade Malone for InsideEVs.com: "Now we know the official groundbreaking of Tesla’s Chinese Gigafactory in Shanghai will occur on Monday. Musk says initial construction of the Shanghai Gigafactory is set to be completed before the end of summer."

  • ElonTweets!

  • @elonmusk "Looking forward to breaking ground on the @Tesla Shanghai Gigafactory today!"

  • @elonmusk "Aiming to finish initial construction this summer, start Model 3 production end of year & reach high volume production next year"

  • @elonmusk "Shanghai Giga will produce affordable versions of 3/Y for greater China. All Model S/X & higher cost versions of Model 3/Y will still be built in US for WW market, incl China."

  • @elonmusk "Shanghai Giga production of Model 3/Y will serve greater China region"

  • As for Simon at Teslarati, he says: "Clues about Tesla’s Gigafactory 3 groundbreaking event emerged this weekend, ironically after Tesla’s critics shared information about the route of Elon Musk’s private airplane. By late Sunday (early Monday morning in China), invitations for the event emerged online. Tesla owner-enthusiast @vincent13031925, for one, shared an image of an invitation for the Gigafactory 3 ground-breaking event, forwarded by a Shanghai Tesla Owner’s Group member."

BYTON M-BYTE'S INFOTAINMENT SCREEN IS 7 IPADS WIDE

  • Chinese startup Byton took the automotive world by surprise last year at the Consumer Electronics Show where it exhibited the M-Byte concept with a gargantuan touchscreen display for the infotainment system." reports Adrian Padeanu for Motor1.com: "For this year’s show in Las Vegas, the company decided to unveil the production-ready cabin of its electric SUV, complete with an expansive 48-inch display or a bit wider than seven iPads put side by side. Tesla’s 17-inch screen doesn’t look so big anymore, does it? Dubbed the “Shared Experience Display” (SED), it’s by far the largest screen you will find in the automotive industry and stretches from one A-pillar to the other. While at a first glance it might seem distracting because of its sheer size, Byton mentions it does not interfere with the driver’s line of sight."
  • "A full reveal of the Byton M-Byte production version is programmed for the middle of the year ahead of production start towards the end of 2019 at the Nanjing plant in China. Buyers will get to pick between a 71-kWh, 250-mile base model estimated to start at $45,000 and a more expensive 95-kWh, 325-mile variant. The M-Byte electric SUV will be available at first in homeland China, with North America and Europe to follow in 2020"
