Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Sunday 20th January 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I can find today, and picked out the ones I think you need to know about.

Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.

My weekend watch…Fully Charged Kia Soul EV

VW RESERVATIONS COULD RIVAL THE MODEL 3

  • "Volkswagen may offer European customers the chance to place a deposit on a new I.D. full-electric car in the first half ahead of the model’s production start in November and market launch in early 2020, in the style of what Tesla did for the European launch of the Model 3." according to a report on Magnetti Marelli.com: "Cars from the initial five or six ramp-up months could be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis, rather than shipping new I.D. models to showrooms to fill up dealer pipelines, said VW brand sales chief Juergen Stackmann. Stackmann denied that the pre-booking plan was a public relations gimmick to whip up interest for the I.D. He said customers in EV-friendly countries such as Norway and the Netherlands would jump at the chance to reserve their I.D. early, even if paying deposits for cars if not usual in their countries."

COLORADO TO IMPLEMENT ZERO EMISSION VEHICLE MANDATE

  • "Colorado governor Jared Polis announced on Thursday that he signed an executive order "supporting a transition to zero-emission vehicles." according to Roadshow by CNET: "The plan includes an adoption of the zero emission vehicle (ZEV) mandate that California and several other states have also implemented, in accordance with section 177 of the Clean Air Act, which allows other states to adopt California's stricter emissions requirements."

GM: 200,000 ELECTRIC CARS SOLD AND NOT A SINGLE BATTERY PACK REPLACED

  • "General Motors CEO Mary Barra was one of many high-profile guests at the Automotive News World Congress, and she made a big claim. She said GM has sold 200,000 electric cars and not a single one has needed a battery replacement. That’s an incredible feat noting GM has sold vehicles with lithium-ion batteries since the first-generation Volt, and drivers have covered hundreds of thousands of miles with their batteries providing the sole power to the wheels." reports GM Authority: "It’s worth noting a small number of Chevrolet Bolt EVs have had their batteries replaced as part of a recall campaign in April 2018, but Barra was likely referring to the need to replace a battery pack due to degradation. The healthy track record should help GM as it moves to introduce more electric cars in the future. Cadillac will lead the charge with a new SUV based on a dedicated EV platform early next decade."

TALE OF DRIVING AN I-PACE FROM AMSTERDAM TO AUSTRIA

  • I found something on LinkedIn from Roland Steinmetz, from EVConsult, who travelled across Europe in his new I-PACE: "I took the I-pace to Austria and it was an exciting adventure! In any case because there was a snow storm in the south of Germany and Austria at the time and almost half of the route it was indeed snowing."

  • Adopt the mindset of a pioneer. Although I have been driving electric for almost 8 years, a 1000km trip in a brand new model is pioneering. You come across all kinds of insecurities before and during the trip: is the driving efficiency as expected? What happens with traffic jams and detours? Is the charger at the expected location, will the charger work and how long will it take? It was an excellent playground for EV lovers like me. It may be different for Tesla drivers though, where chargers, route planning and interoperability is not an issue.
  • Take a co-pilot.
  • Plan your route in detail.
  • Monitor range & speed.
  • Use an app to find the exact location of the charging station.
  • Bring along various cards as identification methods.
  • Take into account that not all chargers are reliable.
  • Our average consumption was around 0,27 kWh/km.
  • The way home is way smoother.
