AUDI E-TRON JUMPS TO #4 IN GERMANY IN JANUARY

  • "The German plug-in passenger car market was up 17% to 6,767 registrations in January, with a seismic change happening in the fuels mix. Fully electric cars (BEVs) jumped up (+68% year over year), while plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) continued sinking (-26%)." reports CleanTechnica: "Looking January’s best sellers, you can see the good moment of all-electric models, with 8 BEVs in the top 10. The fully electric Renault Zoe led the way, with 799 registrations, closely followed by the fully electric VW e-Golf (746) and the fully electric BMW i3 (703). But the big surprise (or not so big surprise) of the month was the Audi e-tron, which started the year in the 4th spot with 407 registrations, a great result, especially considering official customer deliveries are only set to start in February."

THE FIRST HYUNDAI KONA ELECTRIC DELIVERED IN U.S.

  • "It’s finally happening. After months of watching the Hyundai Kona Electric being dispatched to other territories, the first U.S. delivery has taken place. In a ceremony yesterday, Dr. Donald Small — Director of Pediatric Oncology at The Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center — had his all-electric crossover handed over." according to Domenick for InsideEVs.com: "More details are expected to be released soon, but if Hyundai is following the same path as in other markets, the “Ultimate” will be the first trim level available. That variant starts at $44,650, while the “Limited” begins at $41,150. The most affordable trim, the SEL package, has a base price of $36,450."

AMAZON LEADS $700 MILLION INVESTMENT IN RIVIAN

  • "Amazon has indeed taken the lead in a $700 million funding round involving it and several other investors, including some current investors who are increasing their stake in the company." says CleanTechnica: "The company says it is intent on developing vehicles, technology, and services that inspire people to get out and explore the world. It employs more than 750 people at development centers in Plymouth, Michigan; San Jose, California; Irvine, California; and Surrey, England. It will build its vehicles at the former Mitsubishi factory in Normal, Illinois. Mitsubishi ceased producing vehicles at the 2.6 million square foot factory in 2015. Rivian says it will launch the R1T and R1S in the US in late 2020, with sales in other countries slated to begin in 2021."
  • Jeff Wilke, Amazon CEO of Worldwide Consumer: "We’re inspired by Rivian’s vision for the future of electric transportation. RJ has built an impressive organization, with a product portfolio and technology to match. We’re thrilled to invest in such an innovative company.”

A NEW BMW I8 COUPE SAFETY CAR WILL DEBUT IN MEXICO’S FORMULA E RACE

  • BMW Blog: "A new BMW i8 Coupe Safety Car will debut at the Mexico City E-Prix. BMW i has been closely associated with Formula E as ‘Official Vehicle Partner’ since Season One and has provided the entire fleet of safety vehicles ever since. The BMW i8 Coupe Safety Car has been modified with many BMW M components to cope with the specific demands of motor racing. These modifications include a roll bar, rear wing and rear hatch made of carbon fibre, a front splitter, sports seats from the BMW M4 GTS, four-point harness, a roof-mounted signal light system, BMW M carbon ceramic brakes and a sports chassis."

BMW 330E TOURING PLUG-IN HYBRID ON THE WAY

  • Electrified cars are on the rise everywhere around the world. BMW is reporting hefty increases in demand every month for their electrified cars and one of the most popular models is the current BMW 530e plug-in hybrid. At the moment, in certain markets, it’s also the only electrified car on sale, as the 745e is still a few months away and the X5 hybrid is also not available yet. The BMW 330e is another choice but for now it has only been announced, dealers still waiting for the first models to arrive. it now has further electric range as well as a higher electric top speed. Rather than the measly 14 miles of maximum electric range of the old car, this new one has up to 60km (37 miles), or more than double. It also has an electric top speed of 140 km/h (86 mph), rather than the old car’s 120 km/h (74 mph)."

MERCEDES-BENZ DELIVERS ELECTRIC EACTROS HEAVY-DUTY TRUCK TO LOGISTIK SCHMITT FOR TESTING

  • "Mercedes-Benz Trucks has handed over a fully electric eActros truck to Murg Valley (Southern Germany)-based logistics company Logistik Schmitt." according to Green Car Congress.
  • Stefan Buchner, Head of Mercedes-Benz Trucks: "Our eActros has been out on public roads since June 2018 and has already covered more than 30,000 kilometers with its battery-electric drive. Together with customers, we have been compiling experiences of the eActros in regular everyday operations since September. Its range of 200 kilometers has proved to be absolutely realistic. The eActros completes its transportation tasks regardless of the route or other factors. The expenses involved in installing one charging station at each customer’s premises is comparatively low. There is every indication that we are on the right track with our eActros concept. "

SHELL CONTINUES GREEN ENERGY ACQUISITIONS

  • "Shell has announced its acquisition of Sonnen, a German company that specializes in home energy storage. Mostly known for its home battery packs, Sonnen also expanded into home EV charging last year. What does it mean for the industry which includes Tesla’s Powerwall?" reports Phil for Electrek: "Shell previously invested €60 million in Sonnen in May 2018. After completion of this acquisition, Sonnen will become a wholly owned subsidiary of Shell. Sonnen’s main product is its sonnenBatterie, a home energy storage battery similar to Tesla’s Powerwall. sonnenBatterie comes in two models, the eco and the more advanced ecoLinx, which includes home automation features."
