Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Tuesday 19th March 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I could find today, and picked out the best ones to save you time.
Three clarifications following yesterdays show…
- BP Chargemaster Polar chargers are not going to taxi-only
- Shell clarified the broken charger is not theirs but Geniepoint
- ESB replied to my email immediately, investigating why contactless didn’t work
Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.

CANADA ANNOUNCES NEW $5,000 INCENTIVE FOR ELECTRIC CARS
- "As part of its new budget, the Canadian federal government has announced a new $5,000 incentive for electric cars that cost less than $45,000, however, it excludes Tesla vehicles." Says Fred at Electrek today: "Some Canadian provinces already have EV incentive programs but unlike the US, there has never been a federal program to reduce the cost of electric vehicles. With the launch of their latest budget, the Canadian government has now announced a new $5,000 incentive program that is not yet completed. The $45,000 cut off point covers vehicles like the Nissan Leaf, Chevy Bolt EV, and Hyundai Ioniq Electric, but all of Tesla’s vehicles are excluded since the base Model 3 starts at $47,000 CAD."
- The budget says: "“To encourage more Canadians to buy zero-emission vehicles, Budget 2019 proposes to provide $300 million over three years, starting in 2019–20, to Transport Canada to introduce a new federal purchase incentive of up to $5,000 for electric battery or hydrogen fuel cell vehicles with a manufacturer’s suggested retail price of less than $45,000. Program details to follow.”"

BMW INEXT PRODUCTION SUV SPIED PLAYING IN THE SNOW
- com are delighted to get a long video of the new electric BMW: "Our spies were once again in the right place at the right time and had the chance to film the production version of BMW’s iNext electric SUV testing under heavy winter conditions in Sweden. This 5:47-minute video gives us a pretty good look at the vehicle’s dynamics with plenty of accelerations and even some high-speed cornering maneuvers."
- "The iNext, which might end up being called the i5, will be the electric equivalent of today’s BMW X5 in terms of its dimensions. It will be the Bavarian brand’s most technologically advanced vehicle when it debuts in 2021. Before it, the company will launch the iX3 and i4, in 2019 and 2020 respectively.

GERMANY IS BIGGEST ELECTRIC CAR MARKET IN EUROPE SO FAR IN 2019
- "Sales reports for the first two months of 2019 shows that Germany is now the biggest market for all-electric cars in Europe, dethroning Norway." Reports Mark Kane for InsideEV: "It had to happen at some point anyway, as Norway is so much smaller than Germany in population. Norway – at best – can double its BEV sales, reaching 100% BEV market share, while Germany can increase 50-times from less than 2% share to 100%."
- According to data compiled by industry analyst Matthias Schmidt (schmidtmatthias.de) the top 5 countries in Europe ranked by electric car sales for 2019 so far are:
- Germany – ≈9,300
- Norway – ≈7,900
- France – ≈5,900
- Netherlands – ≈4,600
- UK – ≈2,100

VOLKSWAGEN THREATENS TO LEAVE GERMANY’S CAR LOBBY VDA IN SPAT OVER E-CARS
- German carmaker Volkswagen has threatened to quit the country’s influential carmaker lobby group VDA as a dispute over the national car industry’s approach to managing the transition in the transport sector towards low-carbon technologies escalates, the newspaper Welt am Sonntag reports. According to the article, Volkswagen wants the lobby group to budge from its rigid insistence on “technological openness” in the transition and to fully focus instead on electric vehicles. According to cleanenergywire.org: "Volkswagen last week announced it would further accelerate its already ambitious rollout plans for electric mobility. The company that still grapples with the fallout of the dieselgate scandal over manipulated emissions values plans to produce more than 20 million e-cars in the next decade and become fully CO2-neutral by 2050. "
Penske Tests Fuso eCanter Electric Truck In California
- "Daimler delivered the first Fuso eCanter electric truck to Penske Truck Leasing for urban delivery in California." Reports Mark Kane for InsideEVs today: "In December, Penske received also the first out of ten Freightliner eM2s for testing and is waiting for the 10 Freightliner eCascadia heavy-duty trucks. All the vehicles are to be evaluated in real-world service by various companies to prepare for truck electrification."

CHINA'S EVERGRANDE SAYS IT WILL START MAKING ELECTRIC VEHICLES IN JUNE
- "Chinese property firm Evergrande Group will start producing its first electric vehicles in June as part of a goal to become the world's largest new energy vehicle (NEV) company within the next three to five years, according to its chairman." Says a Reuters report today: "Hui Ka Yan made the comments at a conference in the eastern city of Tianjin over the weekend, according to a statement published on the company's website on Tuesday. He also said that Evergrande plans to start selling its first electric vehicle model globally "soon," which will use electric car production technology from Swedish car makers Saab and Koenigsegg, and drive systems from Netherlands' e-Traction, according to the statement."

AUDI Q2 E-TRON ELECTRIC CAR CAUGHT TESTING IN THE SNOW
- "New spy shots provide the very first look at the Audi Q2 E-Tron, which is the fully electric version of the brand’s compact crossover. This one wears some snow as extra concealment, but the images still provide an excellent look at the upcoming EV." According to Chris Bruce for InsideEVs.com today: "Powertrain specs for the electric model are a complete mystery at this point. Speculation indicates the company is aiming for at least a 310-mile (500-kilometer) range on a charge. A recent report suggests that Audi might only sell the Q2 E-Tron in China, and the company might make a long-wheelbase L model exclusively for that market, too."

LACK OF UNDERSTANDING AND INFORMATION IS PREVENTING MOTORISTS FROM TAKING THE EV PLUNGE
- Conflicting and confusing information on the latest generation of battery electric vehicles has created a ‘knowledge gap’ for potential buyers, holding them back from choosing an EV as their next purchase, a new White Paper from the UK’s leading consumer champion and new car buying platform, What Car? has found.
- This is despite 2019 being set to become the year of the electric vehicle, with up to 20 new models scheduled to be launched. Meanwhile, whatcar.com traffic data suggests public interest in EVs is at record levels. In a study of over 9000 motorists, What Car? found 8.4% are already considering a fully electric car as their next vehicle.
- The What Car? What Fuel? comparison tool, with 80,000 users, also found EVs are already an optimal choice for one in 10 drivers. In comparison, the UK market share of fully electric vehicles was only 0.7% in 2018, meaning electric vehicle sales are achieving just 7% of their sales potential.
