Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Saturday 23rd March 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I could find today, and picked out the best ones to save you time.

Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.

HACKERS CRACK TESLA MODEL 3 IN COMPETITION, TESLA GIVES THEM THE CAR

"A group of hackers managed to crack a Tesla Model 3 as part of a hacking competition and Tesla gave them the car for exposing the vulnerability." Reports Fred at Electric: "The automaker made a Model 3 available to hackers in order for them to find and exploit vulnerabilities in the vehicle’s system. The event happened in Vancouver this week and a team of two hackers managed to find an exploit on the last day of competition. Amat Cama and Richard Zhu of team Fluoroacetate targeted the infotainment system on the Tesla Model 3 and used “a JIT bug in the renderer” to manage to take control of the system."

GM CONFIRMS NEXT ELECTRIC CHEVY WILL BE BUILT AT ORION FACTORY

"General Motors will build its next all-electric vehicle at its Orion facility. The announcement was made this morning by the company's Chairman and CEO Mary Barra at the Michigan factory. That is the same plant that currently produces the battery-powered Chevy Bolt" according to Domenick for Motor1.com: "The automaker says the new vehicle will wear the Chevrolet badge and will be built on an improved version of the platform that underpins the Bolt. Though it says more details about the vehicle will be announced closer to its production, it is widely expected to assume the popular shape of a compact crossover."

TESLA ENDS SCHEDULED SERVICING BECAUSE ELECTRIC CARS NEED LESS MAINTENANCE

"One of the perks of owning an electric car is that, for the most part, they require much less maintenance than their internal-combustion counterparts. Tesla is acknowledging that fact in the way it handles the servicing of customer cars. Instead of adhering to a maintenance schedule, Tesla’s new policy only asks customers to bring their cars in for maintenance on an as-needed basis." Says Digital Trends today: "Internal-combustion cars must adhere to maintenance schedules. They need regular oil changes, and replacement of wear items like tires, brakes, and belts. Gasoline and diesel engines have vastly more parts than electric motors, and they are coupled to transmissions that bring their own maintenance needs. There are many opportunities for something to go wrong. Maintenance is a major source of revenue for dealers, which may explain why many seem reluctant to sell electric cars."

OSLO IS WORKING ON WIRELESS CHARGING FOR ITS ELECTRIC TAXIS

"As Norway's capital city prepares to ensure all taxis are zero emission by 2023, Oslo is setting up a wireless charging system for cabs. It aims to have the first such fast-charging taxi system in the world, though it's not clear exactly when it will be up and running." Says Kris Holt for Engadget: "Charging plates will be installed at taxi ranks, which will link to receivers installed in cabs. The system will charge taxis at up to 75 kW. Fortum, a Finnish utility which is working on the project, claims typical hard-wired charging is too time-consuming. This system should keep cabs on the road more often than not, as they'll top up their batteries while idling at taxi ranks."

U.S.’ MOST AFFORDABLE EVS PER MILE OF RANGE: TESLA MODEL 3 IS #1

"The launch of the Tesla Model 3 Standard/Standard Plus battery versions was tremendous news in the past weeks, but it’s the return of Long Range rear-wheel drive version that turns out to be most affordable in terms of price (MSRP + destination charge) per mile of EPA range." Reports Mark Kane for InsideEVs.com: "The second result is 2nd only to the Hyundai Kona Electric, which catches onto $7,500 tax credit (Model 3 LR RWD would be at $118 per mile if $7,500 was still available)."

HONDA LOOKS READY FOR AN ELECTRIC BIKE FUTURE

"Two new production-ready electric bikes were given display space at Honda’s booth during the Tokyo Motorcycle Show today. While Honda has shown off a few electric car concepts lately, it has largely been quiet on the electric two-wheeler scene." According to Jalopnik:" Honda has apparently been partnering with Panasonic on battery swap technology, and used the Benly Electric scooter to showcase that technology. Meanwhile, the CR Electric uses an off-the-shelf CRF twin-spar frame and an electric motor/transmission unit emblazoned with Mugen logos for a very convincing race-ready EV."
