VOLKSWAGEN PUSHES BATTERY PARTNERS TO BUILD GIGAFACTORIES
- "Volkswagen is pushing its joint venture partners including SK Innovation (SKI) to build electric car battery plants which have at least one Gigawatt manufacturing capacity, Chief Executive Herbert Diess told Reuters." in a report today: "Volkswagen will buy 50 billion euros ($56.57 billion) worth of battery cells for electric cars and has identified South Korea’s SKI, LG Chem and Samsung SDI as strategic battery cell suppliers as well as China’s Contemporary Amperex Technology Co Ltd (CATL)."
PORSCHE JAPAN SELECTS ABB TO BUILD CHADEMO INFRASTRUCTURE FOR TAYCAN
- "ABB announced that it was selected by Porsche Japan for a joint development project of next-generation EV chargers for the Japanese market" says InsideEVs today: "According to the press release, the two will develop a “dedicated high-power charger” with power output exceeding 150 kW."
- From the press release: "“ABB has entered into an agreement to deliver its market-leading electric vehicle infrastructure for Porsche Japan’s EVs, including Taycan, the automaker’s first fully electric car, set to enter the Japanese market in 2020.
- Under the terms, Porsche Japan will install ABB’s high-power chargers at Porsche Centers and public facilities across the country, creating a network of fast chargers for its electric vehicles. The first installation is set to go live in mid-2020."

AUDI AI:ME UNVEILED AS REAR-WHEEL-DRIVE EV FOR THE CITY"
- "The Volkswagen I.D. Roomzz isn’t the only new fully electric concept VAG is introducing at the Auto Shanghai 2019 in China as Audi is also attending the event to showcase the new AI:ME. Sending out a futuristic A2 vibe, the new showcar carrying the Four Rings takes the shape of a compact zero-emissions hatchback developed primarily for city use." reports Adrian Padeanu for Motor1.com: "Audi believes an equivalent production version would mostly travel at speeds between 20 and 70 kph (12 to 43 mph) over short distances. With that in mind, the AI:ME was conceived with a simple hardware configuration encompassing a 65-kWh battery pack ideal for city use, although the actual range isn’t specified. The design is as futuristic as you’d expect from a concept, complete with rear suicide doors and the absence of conventional B-pillars. Intricate LED headlights and taillights lend the electric hatch a high-tech look, while the use of real plants inside the minimalistic cabin is a first in an automobile, according to Audi. Not that it comes as a big surprise, but the AI:ME has been envisioned with a highly advanced autonomous driving system with level 4 capabilities."

DUBAI POLICE UNVEIL NEW FLEET OF ELECTRIC CARS
- "Police in Dubai are going green with their new eco-friendly fleet of electric patrol cars to support the emirate's sustainability drive. Dubai Police officers will be getting behind the wheel of 13 Renault Zoe electric cars, secured from Arabian Automobiles." according to TheNational.ae: "Dubai Police is not the only state service helping to protect the planet. In February, Dubai Corporation of Ambulance Services unveiled the Zero DS, which produces no heat, vibration or fumes. The ambulance service said the emergency vehicle would be used for rapid intervention and immediate response situations."

TESLA DELIVERS FIRST $35,000 MODEL 3S TO A HAPPY FEW CUSTOMERS
- "Tesla has started deliveries of the long-promised Model 3 for $35,000 to a happy few customers, but the delivery of the promised vehicle is expected to be short lived." says Fred at Electrek today: "After Tesla announced that it is moving away from the promised base version of Model 3 at $35,000 last week, the automaker confirmed that it would start deliveries this weekend with a software-locked version of the Model 3 Standard Range Plus. Now several buyers have reached out to Electrek to confirm that they have taken delivery of the ‘Model 3 Standard Range’. The vehicle is virtually identical to the more expensive Standard Range Plus version of the Model 3 except that Tesla has software-locked the battery pack at 90% of its capacity and disabled some features like “onboard music streaming service, navigation with live traffic visualization, and heated seats.”

PURE ELECTRIC VEHICLES ENTER PHASE OF FASTEST GROWTH REPORT CLAIMS
- A series of new reports from IDTechEx Research says the electric vehicles have officially entered their fastest phase of growth. While good news, it isn't too unexpected. Rapid improvements in technology have expanded the electric vehicle market in so many ways." Battery costs have dropped whilst their range and efficiency have increased. At the same time, governments across the world are embracing policies that emphasis no carbon emission transport. One of the studies by the independent market research company examines the rise of electric buses across the globe."
ELON MUSK SAYS TESLA IS “VASTLY AHEAD” ON SELF-DRIVING
- "Tesla is less than two years away from full self-driving, CEO Elon Musk said in an interview with MIT researcher Lex Fridman published on Friday. And he said Tesla was far ahead of other companies working on self-driving technology." according to Ars Technica article today: "Musk told Fridman that Tesla customers would need to keep their hands on the wheel "for at least six months or something like that." But he predicted that soon—"maybe even toward the end of this year, I'd be shocked if it's not next year at the latest"—Tesla's self-driving technology will become so good that "having a human intervene will decrease safety."

LOTUS TO UNVEIL £1M+ ELECTRIC HYPERCAR AT SHANGHAI MOTOR SHOW
- "BRITISH car maker Lotus is set to pull the wraps off a £1m+ pure-electric hypercar at the Shanghai Motor Show later today." says the Sunday Times Driving: "The low-volume sports car’s £1m+ pure-electric performance model would sit at the top of the Lotus family tree, and go up against extreme supercars from Aston Martin and McLaren. The car would be fitted with electric motor and battery tech developed in partnership with the Williams F1 team’s Advanced Engineering division."
