Show #455
Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Friday 26th April 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I could find today to save you time.
Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.
BYD TO BUILD 4TH ELECTRIC-CAR PLANT FOR $1.5BN
- "Leading Chinese electric-vehicle maker BYD plans to spend 10 billion yuan ($1.5 billion) to build its fourth plant for passenger cars." according to Nikkei.com: "The automaker signed an agreement Thursday with the government of the eastern city of Changzhou to produce electric vehicles and key components there. The new site will have an annual capacity of 400,000 autos. Details on when the factory will break ground or the operational start date were not disclosed. BYD controls a fifth of China's electric-vehicle market, the largest in the world. The automaker, which does not disclose its production capacity for electric cars, sold about 250,000 of them last year."
COLORADO WANTS TO FINE GAS-POWERED DRIVERS WHO PARK AT EV CHARGING STATIONS
- "ICEing, when a fossil-fuel-burning internal-combustion-engined vehicle parks in a spot designated for electric charging, can be an act of passive-aggressive evil or an unintentional act of basic necessity. Either way, it can make already more complicated EV ownership a pain, and a new bill in Colorado wants to permanently put an end to it. Perpetrators would be ordered to pay a fine." says Autoblog today "The matter at hand is keeping charging stations in public parking lots open for electric vehicles or plug-in hybrid vehicles that need to use them. This includes gas-powered vehicles or battery-powered vehicles that are not actively charging, and results in a fine of $150 with a $32 surcharge. There is no mention of towing in the bill."

TESLA GIGAFACTORY 3 SET TO SMASH FACTORY CONSTRUCTION RECORD
- "If you're not yet familiar with Weibo, it's one of the most popular social media networks in China. It's also a place where Tesla has previously posted important information. The website just put out an article claiming that the Tesla Gigafactory 3 is on course to demolish all prior construction records." says Steven Loveday for InsideEVs.com: "Tesla China has already changed a vegetable field into a factory in just 108 days (less than four months). in the past it took other companies in the area a minimum of 17 months to complete a structure comparable to the Tesla Shanghai Gigafactory. While Tesla held its official groundbreaking ceremony on January 7, 2019, construction was already underway in December 2018. If the company can work to get the project functional anytime soon (and well before May 2020, which is way ahead of what's planned), then it will smash factory construction records by a number of months."
TESLA SUPERCHARGERS V2 WILL ACTUALLY OFFER 150 KW POWER OUTPUT
- Staying with InsideEVs: "According to Electrek, a Tesla spokesperson said that the upgrade of V2 Superchargers will enable charging at up to 150 kW, which is 5 kW more than the previously announced upgrade to 145 kW. Originally, the Superchargers were rated at 120 kW, so the final increase will be 30 kW or 25% to 150 kW. As we understand, Tesla is unlocking the full potential of currently installed Superchargers after years of utilization, which proved it's possible and safe."
- As for On Route Warmup, Tesla said :"New Supercharging infrastructure isn’t the only way we are improving our customers’ charging experience. Beginning this week, Tesla is rolling out a new feature called On-Route Battery Warmup. Now, whenever you navigate to a Supercharger station, your vehicle will intelligently heat the battery to ensure you arrive at the optimal temperature to charge, reducing average charge times for owners by 25%.""
PANASONIC MAY UPGRADE JAPAN PLANT TO MAKE ADVANCED TESLA BATTERIES
- "Panasonic Corp may upgrade one of its battery plants in Japan to produce advanced-format battery cells for Tesla Inc if needed by the U.S. electric vehicle (EV) maker, a person familiar with the matter told Reuters on Thursday." reports Reuters today: "Panasonic, currently the exclusive battery cell supplier for Tesla, produces cells for the EV maker at their joint plant in the U.S. state of Nevada - the so-called Gigafactory - as well as at two plants in Japan.
- The Japanese plants handle cylindrical lithium-ion “18650” cells, used to power Tesla’s Model S and Model X vehicles, whereas the Nevada plant produces the newer, higher-energy density “2170” cells for the mass-market Model 3 sedan.
- The Japanese production lines would only need minor changes to switch to 2170 cells from the 18650, said the person, who declined to be identified as the matter was private."
TESLA’S NEXT-GEN ROADSTER WILL EXCEED 1,000 KM OF BATTERY RANGE
- "When Elon Musk unveiled the next-generation Tesla Roadster back in November 2017, he shocked the electric car community by revealing that the all-electric supercar has a range of 620 miles per charge. That’s 1,000 kilometers between charges. The figures are pretty much insane, even by today’s standards." according to Simon at teslarati: "There are now indications that the next-generation Tesla Roadster will go even farther in between charges. Elon Musk mentioned this on Twitter, stating that the range of the upcoming vehicle will be “above 1,000 km.” Musk was responding to Ride the Lightning podcast host Ryan McCaffrey then, who was inquiring if the efficiencies recently introduced to the Model S and X will make it to the all-electric supercar."

TESLA SEMI PROTOTYPES WORKS 'AMAZINGLY WELL,' PRODUCTION DELAYED
- "The two Tesla Semi prototypes, unveiled in 2017, were from time to time seen in California or even in many other states doing test runs or simply helping moving stuff (most recently also spotted delivering Tesla Model 3 cars to customers). Elon Musk said that the electric trucks were "working amazingly well," but that's not enough for the Semi to enter production just. Tesla Automotive President Jerome Guillen said" according to InsideEvs.com today: "The production was originally planned from late 2019, but now as Tesla again is struggling with losses, the market launch was postponed until 2020."

VOLKSWAGEN I.D. R SPIED PREPPING FOR NÜRBURGRING RECORD RUN
- "The Volkswagen I.D. R is preparing for an all-out assault on the Nürburgring Nordschleife to set a new lap record for an electric vehicle. It needs to beat the Nio EP9's time of 6:45.90 minutes. These spy shots and brief video catches some of the testing for the attempt." according to Christopher Smith for Motor1.com: "Volkswagen did extensive computer simulations ahead of putting the car on the track. These real-world runs are for figuring out the suspension setup and finding the ideal tire compound."

FUELL’S NEW BIKES LAUNCH TODAY
- "Fuell’s new electric bikes, the Flow and the Fluid, officially launch today. The Fluid is their electric bicycle, available as the Fluid 1 (Class 1, 20 mph assist) or 1S (Class 3, 28mph) via website Indiegogo.
