What, when, where and how much?
Show #466
Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Wednesday 8th May 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I could find today to save you time.
Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.
VOLKSWAGEN OFFERS PRE-BOOKING FOR THE FIRST TIME
ID.3 to come with ranges from 330 to 550 kilometers (WLTP) and starting price of under €30,000 in Germany
Exclusive pre-booking special edition ID.3 1ST with comprehensive equipment limited to 30,000 vehicles
ID.3 1ST with range of 420 km (WLTP), at a starting price of less than €40,000 in Germany
Including charging of electric power for a year at no cost up to a maximum of 2,000 kWh for ID.3 1ST buyers (£340 at 0.17p)
Registration deposit is €1,000
Volkswagen is today starting pre-booking in Europe for the first model in its new full-electric ID. family, the ID.3. With immediate effect, potential customers can register for an early production slot for the ID.3 at www.volkswagen.com/id-prebooking by paying a registration deposit of €1,000. The ID.3 1ST special edition, which has been especially configured for pre-booking, includes high-quality, high-performance equipment and is limited to 30,000 vehicles. Volkswagen is equipping the ID.3 1ST with the medium-sized battery option later available for the ID.3 series, which is expected to be most popular. With the three series battery options, ranges between 330 and up to 550 kilometers in accordance with WLTP will be possible. The pre-booking special edition has a range of 420 km (WLTP). While the base recommended price of the ID.3 series model with the smallest battery version starts at under €30,000 in Germany (target price), the exclusive ID.3 1ST special edition will be available for less than €40,000, before the deduction of the state subsidy in each case.
Volkswagen is offering ID.3 1ST buyers the possibility of taking electric power for their vehicles free of charge for the first year up to a maximum of 2,000 kWh – at all public charging points connected to the Volkswagen charging app We Charge, and also using the pan-European IONITY rapid charging network, in which Volkswagen is participating, which offers eco-power where this is technically feasible. The ID.3 is to be delivered to customers in carbon neutral form. Both battery cell production and ID. production are oriented towards this goal, for example with the consistent use of power from renewable sources. Unavoidable emissions in the production process will be compensated for by certified climate projects. Production of the ID.3 1ST is to start, as planned, at the end of 2019 and the first vehicles are to be delivered to customers in mid-2020.
Volkswagen is offering the ID.3 1ST special edition in four colors and three versions. All the versions will feature large wheel rims and comprehensive equipment: the ID.3 1ST with comprehensive convenience features, including voice control and navigation system, the ID.3 1ST Plus with additional IQ. Light and bi-color exterior and interior design, and the ID.3 1ST Max with large panoramic glass roof and innovations such as the augmented reality head-up display.
Pre-booking is being offered in 29 European markets. The most important markets in Europe for the ID.3 will be Norway, Germany, the Netherlands, France, the UK and Austria. On average, Volkswagen plans to deliver more than 100,000 vehicles per year to customers.

BATTERY SIZES
45kWh goes 330km
58kWh goes 420km
77kWh goes 550km
206 MILES FOR UNDER 30,000 EURO
Dr Max Holland for CLeanTechnica: "The most positive announcement for me was that the basic 45 kWh variant (with 330 km / 206 miles of WLTP range) is confirmed to start under €30,000, and will arrive sooner than we expected. It is scheduled to be available from “summer 2020.” It will also be able to add “260 km” (i.e., 80% of its capacity) in 30 minutes on optimal CCS DC chargers (able to deliver 125 kW or higher), which is a very decent performance at this price point. Vehicles will not be level 4 autonomy ready, but rather level 3. The hardware is in place, ready for when the software reaches that capability over the coming years. Don’t hold your breath for this, but it’s good to see VW at least planning ahead for level 3 autonomy. This is of course some ways below Tesla, whose vehicles are all full autonomy ready (level 4 and, potentially, level 5) for when the software improves. VW thinks full autonomy will take longer and cost more money than is sometimes believed (they mean “believed by Tesla,” of course)."
A SIGNIFICANT MILESTONE
VW didn't say when it would start taking full-fledged pre-orders, although those are unofficially expected to start after the ID.3's formal debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September. Either way, this is a significant milestone -- it shows that the automaker's EV strategy is more than just talk.

DONT CALL IT A GOLF
"The Golf-sized battery-powered car is part of VW Group's 30 billion-euro ($34 billion) strategy to topple Tesla as the electric-car leader. It will be called the ID3. Other ID3 versions will include an entry-level car priced below 30,000 euros, about the same level as the diesel variant of the Golf hatchback, and a large battery version, whose pricing was not disclosed."

TESLA RIVALRY
"In a sign of its growing marketing rivalry, Tesla sent an email to prospective German customers on Wednesday, trumpeting its Model S and Model X as having the best range of electric cars in series Production. Tesla raised $2.35 billion last week to pad its coffers amid struggles to generate profits sustainably. The California-based carmaker’s push into Europe and China puts it in direct competition with VW and its upscale sister brands Audi and Porsche, which are also ramping up electric-car plans."

ROOM FOR THE RANGE TO GROW
ThisIsMoney say: "The German car brand, which will hope the ID range will help repair its reputation following the Dieselgate emissions scandal in 2015, said the ID.3 signals the 'potential for expansion into bigger and smaller models' in the zero-emissions line-up. That opens the door for a dinkier ID.1 and supermini-size SUV ID.2, as well as a range of larger cars to suit bigger families."
THEY WILL BE IN DEALERS
AutoExpress confirmed they will be in dealerships: ""Yes, you will see ID3. in dealers. People want to touch them. People are online doing their whole life but they still want to touch the car when they buy it. So yes, you will need to be able to touch the car, drive the car, get the experience. Especially when it’s offering something you don’t know. That’s why our dealers are so important. Some people see the network as a problem but we see it as an asset. During the buying process, potential customers will also have access to 'real world' range estimates alongside the WLTP calculated range of cars in the ID. Line up."
