Show #471
Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Tuesday 14th May 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I could find today to save you time.
Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.
ALREADY MORE THAN 15,000 REGISTRATIONS FOR THE VOLKSWAGEN ID.3
- Less than one week after the start of pre-booking for the ID.3, more than 15,000 registrations have already been received for the first model in the new full-electric ID. family.
- That is already more than half of the total pre-booking volume of 30,000 vehicles. Volkswagen has recorded the greatest interest from the markets of Germany, Norway, the Netherlands, the UK and Sweden.
PORSCHE TAYCAN TURBO FIRST RIDE TEASES PRODUCTION SPECS AND PRICE
- "Porsche recently granted Automobile Magazine a rare test ride in the Taycan Turbo, the top-tier variant of the company’s first modern all-electric car." says Simon at Teslarati: "Similar to other electric vehicles, the Taycan is capable of regenerative braking as well, though the vehicle’s maximum regeneration is an impressive 250 kW. Higher-tier models also boast features like air suspension and rear-wheel steering. Porsche is yet to fully announce the final specs of the Taycan, though a brand ambassador has confirmed the contents of a document obtained by the Automobile listing the features and specs of each Taycan version. According to the document, the base Taycan will be Rear Wheel Drive only, and it will be equipped with an 80 kWh battery pack. The base Taycan will be powered by a choice of 240-kW (322-hp) and 280-kW (375-hp) motors, and it will command a price in the low ~$90,000 range."

2020 MERCEDES-BENZ EQC FIRST OFFICIAL TEST DRIVE IN L.A
- The YouTube description says: “Hop into the all-new Mercedes-Benz EQC 400 4MATIC (2019) and let our host Felix Smith take you on a tour through the streets of Los Angeles, California. In this very first real EQC test drive we put the car through its paces. So here is – almost – everything you might want to know about the features and details of the first fully electric SUV by Mercedes-Benz and our idea of the electric future of mobility.
- The two electric motors of the EQC 400 4MATIC produce 410 PS, which are good for a 0 to 60 mph sprint in just 5.1 seconds. But there’s so much more to this vehicle than sheer power. That’s why we also talk about the car’s different exterior lines, its technical features like recuperation and the integrated MBUX system with gesture control. Moreover, we thoroughly reviewed the car’s distinctive design, its five different driving modes, the charging options, and we give you the hard facts & numbers like the EQC’s driving range.”

HYUNDAI AND RIMAC ARE TEAMING UP TO BUILD FAST EVS
- "Turns out everyone wants a piece of Rimac. Not least Hyundai and Kia, which have today announced they’re investing a not-insignificant €80 million in the Croatian EV hypercar maker and supplier to the likes of Aston Martin and Koenignegg." writes TopGear.com today "The aim? The formation of a “technical partnership” that will see the companies “collaborate on two high-performance electric vehicles by 2020”. Hell. Yes. A press release issued by the companies says “Hyundai Motor, Kia Motors and Rimac will work closely together to develop an electric version of Hyundai Motor’s N brand midship sports car and a high-performance fuel cell electric vehicle"

AMSTERDAM LAUNCHES FLEXPOWER SMART CHARGING NETWORK
- "The City of Amsterdam, Netherlands, launched this month Flexpower - tle argest smart charging network for electric vehicles, which maximizes the use of renewable energy, lowers the need for investments in the electric grid and accelerates charging speed during off-peak periods." says Mark Kane for InsideEVs.com "he project is conducted by Vattenfall and the City of Amsterdam, together with grid owner Liander, the infrastructure competence center Elaad, and the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences. The network includes a total of 456 charging stations with 912 charging points (which is a third of all in Amsterdam) operated by Vattenfall, which were upgraded (power increased by 40%) and connected to the Flexpower. Having control over the charging stations, knowledge about current production by local renewable sources (mostly solar) and electricity demand, as well as forecasts, the Flexpower can limit charging power during peak periods (otherwise grid upgrades would be required) or increase the charging power during off-peak periods (especially when production from renewable sources is highest) to accelerate charging and quickly makes use of renewable electricity when it's available."

FIRST DETAILS ON NEW RANGE ROVER
- "Land Rover will this autumn kick off an extremely significant two-year period of consolidation and expansion, following a turbulent 18 months, that will define the brand for the next decade. " reports Autocar: "A great deal of the activity will relate not just to the launch of four new vehicles but also increased electrification within its line-up. Although the marque’s pure-electric vehicles are still some years away – with sibling brand Jaguar leading the group in this market segment – all new Land Rover models from late 2019 will be offered with the option of mild-hybrid or plug-in hybrid drivetrains, allowing it to leave its diesel difficulties behind. TESLA IS A PIONEER THAT DRIVES VOLKSWAGEN’S EV INITIATIVES
- "Volkswagen CEO Herbert Diess was recently asked about his insights on American electric car maker Tesla during an appearance at the Die Welt podcast. The VW boss was candid, stating that Tesla is a pioneer in the electric vehicle market, and it is one that drives Volkswagen in several areas. Despite this, the CEO noted that VW has a thing or two that can be used to catch up to the Silicon Valley-based company." says Teslarati: "VW CEO Herbert Diess noted that he hopes the American carmaker will survive. “I hope that Tesla survives because it is, of course, an incentive and an impulse for us,” he said. He later added that while Tesla has established a lead in the electric vehicle market, this headstart was “certainly not unassailable.” Diess explained that as a “small, focused company,” Tesla has certain advantages, particularly when it comes to its battery and its autonomous driving technologies."
