Show #502

Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Sunday 16th  June 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time.

Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.

WRC RULES OFFICIALLY SWITCH TO HYBRID POWER FOR 2022 SEASON

  • "The World Rally Championship’s highest class will move to incorporate hybrid electric drive in two seasons time. The rule change will initially feature what the rulemakers are calling a “supplementary hybrid system” with spec components and software as a transitional stage from 2022 to 2025. Following that, regulations will open up for more electric power assist options." says Jalopnik: "The current aim of the move to hybrid is to provide the cars an ability to run in full EV while driving through transit stages through cities, and provide an as-yet-undefined power boost on special stages."

SEVERAL STATES WANT TO USE CREDIT CARDS AT EV STATIONS

  • "A number of states across the U.S. are proposing to install magnetic stripe credit card readers at publicly-funded electric vehicle charging stations – and that’s causing concern among security experts." reports CarScoops: "Tech Crunch reports that most current EV charging station rely on a credit card linked through an app or contactless payments with RFID-enabled credit cards or a driver’s smartphone or smartwatch. Not only are contactless payments easy, but they are also very secure and reduce the chance of cards being cloned or having data skimmed. Despite this, states including Arizona, California, Nevada, Vermont, and those in New England may introduce more traditional card readers."

FORMULA E CALENDAR 2019/20

  • The Express reports: "There will be added interest in the all-electric championship next season when manufacturing giants Porsche and Mercedes join the fray, giving an indication of the momentum behind Electric Vehicle Technology. Regulation changes include an increase in power that drivers will have available during Attack Mode, while they will not be able to activate the boost under a full-course yellow or safety car conditions Therefore, they will have to move off the racing line and activate Attack Mode while under normal racing conditions and run the risk of losing positions."

FRENCH EV SALES UP 34% IN MAY 2019

  • The French plug-in electric vehicle (PEV) market scored 4,051 registrations in May, up 34% year over year (YoY), with fully electric cars (+36%) growing faster than plug-in hybrids (30%). All-electric cars (BEVs) represented 71% of all plug-in sales." writes CleanTechica today: "This growth is even more significant when we realize that the overall auto market remained stagnant (+1%). This result placed the 2019 PEV share (so far) at 2.5%, with BEVs alone having 1.8% share. Renault Zoe’s sales were up 23%, hitting 1,331 units, an impressive performance. This is especially notable considering the heavily revised Zoe Neo is just a couple of months away, as are the electric versions of the Peugeot 208 and Opel Corsa, while the much hyped VW ID.3 is not that far away either. Elsewhere, the Tesla Model 3 recovered its natural place in the French market, the runner-up spot, with 321 deliveries, but what people really want to know is — will the Tesla sports sedan be able to reach another 1,000+/month performance in June or were the 1,153 units of March a freak event?"

HONDA'S NEW EV COULD BE A REAL WORLD-BEATER

  • "Engineered from the ground up for battery power (instead of adapted to the purpose after the fact), the new architecture will integrate a 35.5-kWh water-cooled lithium-ion battery pack placed down low within the wheelbase for ideal balance. The electric motor will drive the rear wheels, riding on an independent suspension made (in part) out of forged aluminum with the wheels pushed out to the extremities for agility." says CarBuzz: Honda says the vehicle will be able to travel over 125 miles on a charge"

THE AUDI E-TRON IS AN EV FOR BEGINNERS

  • From BMWBlog: "The Audi e-tron sports a 95 kWh battery pack and is capable of charging at 150 kW. More importantly, it’s capable of sustaining that charge speed for almost its entire charge cycle. From about 10-percent to almost 80-percent, the e-tron can charge at 150 kW. That gives it the broadest band of fast charging of any EV on the market. That’s more important than a lot of critics might claim."

  • They says "Some prototype Tesla Model 3s can charge at 250 kW "

  • "Audi intended for the e-tron to be the car that brought traditional Audi customers over to electric mobility. After spending some time with it, I think Audi nailed its intended objective, for better or worse. If you’re looking for something funky and weird, something with a whoopee cushion mode in its main touchscreen, the e-tron is probably not for you."

UNITED STATES SPEND TEN TIMES MORE ON FOSSIL FUEL SUBSIDIES THAN EDUCATION

  • "A new International Monetary Fund (IMF) study shows that USD$5.2 trillion was spent globally on fossil fuel subsidies in 2017. The equivalent of over 6.5% of global GDP of that year, it also represented a half-trillion dollar increase since 2015 when China ($1.4 trillion), the United States ($649 billion) and Russia ($551 billion) were the largest subsidizers." according to Forbes: "US spend on these subsidies in 2015 is more than the country’s defense budget and 10 times the federal spending for education"
