200 MILE+ EVS

Following the news yesterday of the Lightyear One targeting 450 miles from their solar powered car, I thought it might be timely to look at the range of EV's which can do over 200 miles. Because surely that's the sweet spot in 2019? These are WLTP Range by the way, and a couple of honourable mentions at the end. Not all of these are on sale yet. Have I forgotten any?

MUSK: TESLA MUST GO `ALL OUT' TO SET DELIVERIES RECORD

"Tesla Inc. could be on the verge of a quarterly record for vehicle deliveries, though the electric carmaker will need to go “all out” in the last few days of the month, Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk wrote in an internal memo." reports Bloomberg today: "The company has forecast it will deliver 90,000 to 100,000 cars in the second quarter after handing over just 63,000 vehicles to customers in the first three months of the year. The company’s previous best for quarterly deliveries was 90,700 vehicles in the last three months of 2018."

Elon Musk: "There is a lot of speculation regarding our vehicle deliveries this quarter, he reality is that we are on track to set an all-time record, but it will be very close. However, if we go all out, we can definitely do it! We already have enough vehicle orders to set a record, but the right cars are not yet all in the right locations. Logistics and final delivery are extremely important, as well as finding demand for vehicle variants that are available locally, but can’t reach people who ordered that variant before the end of the quarter.”

Sources say there are 12,000 undelivered orders. I've also seen on Reddit someone saying they were called by a Tesla rep to take a different spec than the Model 3 they'd ordered.

HYUNDAI MOTOR TO BUILD A PURE ELECTRIC SUV PROTOTYPE THIS OCTOBER

"Hyundai Motor has begun to produce a prototype of its first compact sports utility vehicle (SUV) on the Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP), a platform being built exclusively for electric vehicles." reports Korea Times. Remember the Kona is an ICE platform: "Hyundai Motor has requested several auto parts companies to supply parts necessary for a prototype of its first electric car model NE (project name), sources in the automobile industry said on June 23. Hyundai plans to complete the prototype by December. The prototype is a pre-production test vehicle before mass production. Carmakers usually make 50 to 200 prototypes prior to beginning mass production of a model. "

THERE ARE 25,000+ CHADEMO CHARGERS GLOBALLY. 9,000+ IN EUROPE

"CHAdeMO Association recently reported that the total number of CHAdeMO chargers around the world increased to 25,300 (up roughly 40% year-over-year)." according to InsideEVs: "The single biggest market for CHAdeMO is Europe, where CHAdeMO is often installed in parallel with CCS Combo 2 in multi-head chargers. As of April 2019, there was 9,200 CHAdeMO in Europe (up by close to 50% or 3,000 from year earlier). The progress in Japan, where CHAdeMO was developed, is much slower and number of chargers stands at 7,600. North America lived to see 3,200 CHAdeMO chargers, which is close to 40% more than a year ago, however, it's hard to say how Nissan/Mitsubishi will cope, being the only major forces behind CHAdeMO now."

HYUNDAI KONA SMOKES FRONT TYRES

"Performance Drive demonstrated how the Kona Electric can smoke its front tires with ease, and by the same token, the subcompact crossover can accelerate to 60 km/h in 3.53 seconds. From zero to 100, the traction control helps the Hyundai hit that velocity in 6.86 seconds." writes AutoEvolution: "in the United States, the Kona Electric comes standard with the larger of the two options, translating to 258 miles according to the Environmental Protection Agency. The SEL trim level retails at $36,950 while the Limited and Ultimate soar to $41,400 and $44,900 excluding destination. This being the U.S., the federal government offers a plug-in grant of up to $7,500, bringing the price down to $29,450 after the tax credit."

BYD ADDS BUS MANUFACTURING CAPACITY IN NORTH AMERICA WITH NEW CANADIAN PLANT

"BYD is taking another step into the lucrative North American bus market with the announcement of a new bus plant in Newmarket, Ontario, Canada. The new 45,000-square-foot facility represents another step forward into the electrified future of North America." reports Clean Technica "BYD’s new plant in Newmarket, Ontario and gives BYD additional bus production capacity close to the  high-density east coast of the US in addition to opening up new partnerships in Canada. The new plant already has its first marching orders, with an order for 10 fully electric BYD buses for the largest transit operator in Canada, the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC). The TTC also has an option to add another 30 BYD buses beyond the initial order."

SIEMENS SELLS ELECTRIC AIRCRAFT PROPULSION BUSINESS TO ROLLS-ROYCE

"Siemens is set to sell its eAircraft unit to Rolls-Royce – the companies expect the move to take place in late 2019." says ChargedEVs: "Siemens eAircraft develops electric and hybrid-electric propulsion systems for the aerospace industry. At locations in Munich and Erlangen in Germany as well as Budapest, Hungary, it cooperates with partners such as Airbus to create prototypes for propulsion systems like Airbus’s CityAirbus"

SPARK PARTNERS WITH BP TO PROVE PIONEERING UK ELECTRIC VEHICLE TECHNOLOGY

"Spark EV Technology today announced a successful collaboration with BP that provided real-world trials which validated its advanced range prediction system for electric vehicles (EVs)." in a story from Automotive NEws last week: "EVs today are poor at estimating how far their battery will take them, and in real world tests can significantly underestimate or overestimate the energy needed for a journey. Urban driving can be 2 or 3 times as efficient as motorway driving, and yet the vehicle uses the most recent driving efficiency as a guide to the remaining range. This means vehicles can significantly over or underestimate range when cars changes from urban to motorway driving, or vice-versa. During Spark’s trial with BP it was observed that one car could have driven 45 miles more than its displayed range, and on another journey an extra 21 miles more range had to be used to complete the journey than the car predicted. In comparison, Spark intelligent range prediction uses data on where the car is going, not where it has been, and for the same journeys predicted the range to an accuracy of just 3.8 miles and 0.4 miles respectively. "

HOW DID THE TESLA MODEL 3 BECOME THE WORLD'S SAFEST CAR?

"As most Tesla fans already know, Tesla’s vehicles are just about the safest on the road. Model 3 is the safest car ever tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which judged Tesla’s newest car to have the lowest probability of injury in a collision of any of the over 900 cars it has tested. In second place is Model S, and in third - you guessed it - Model X." writes EVANNEX for InsideEVs: "

Tesla’s vehicles have glass roofs, which you might think are less safe than the metal kind, but in fact the opposite is the case. The roof panels on the Model 3 are made like a windshield - two layers of hardened glass laminated with thermoplastic - and are much stiffer than any thin sheet-metal roof.  Thanks to Tesla’s connectivity features, the company has detailed data on all accidents that happen to its cars. Teslas on Autopilot average one accident per 2.7 million miles driven, whereas the average for all passenger vehicles in the US is one accident for every 436,000 miles."
