Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Friday 28th June 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time.
Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.
Hello to new supporter MARK CLANCY and new PRODUCER HOWARD ANTHONY SMITH
TESLA IDENTIFY CAUSE OF FIRE
"Tesla recently announced that it has identified the cause of a Model S fire that was reported in Shanghai last April. The incident, which attracted a notable amount of attention from international media, was due to a single battery module near the front of the vehicle, according to the carmaker." says Simon at Teslarati: "The company has also noted that it had rolled out an over-the-air update to help prevent similar incidents from happening in the future. In order to avoid similar incidents from happening, Tesla has revised the charge and thermal management settings on Model S and Model X units, which feature the same systems as the ill-fated vehicle from Shanghai. ust recently, for example, Jaguar announced that it would be recalling the I-PACE for a braking issue. The veteran carmaker noted that the braking problem could be addressed through a software update, but because the company is yet to offer OTA services to its customers, I-PACE owners will be required to set up an appointment with a Jaguar dealer to have their vehicles manually updated."

CATL PLANS MASSIVE INCREASE IN EUROPEAN BATTERY PRODUCTION
"Chinese battery cell manufacturer CATL has decided to increase the investment in its planned factory in Erfurt by a factor of 7.5: Instead of the originally planned 240 million euros, 1.8 billion euros are now earmarked for the German location." says Carrie Hampel for electrive: "With the new investment, battery production in the central German city of Erfurt could quickly exceed the size of Tesla’s Gigafactory in Nevada. Tesla boss Elon Musk is also aiming for a long-term capacity of around 100-gigawatt hours with Tesla’s battery factory. From Erfurt, CATL intends to supply customers that include VW, BMW, Daimler, the French PSA group as well as Volvo and Jaguar Land Rover."

IONITY PARTNERS WITH EXTRA MSA GROUP
IONITY have contracted to install HPC Stations at eight Extra ‘umbrella branded’ MSAs, each initially comprising up to six state-of-the-art 350 kW Chargers. This agreement represents another step in IONITY’s pan-European expansion, which will see up to 2400 Chargers installed by end of 2020.
The first of the IONITY/Extra HPC Stations is targeted for opening at Extra’s new M1 J45 Leeds Skelton Lake MSA later this year. This is in conjunction with a £60m plus investment by Extra for a high quality ‘new concept’ MSA facility, the construction works for which are now well advanced. The other Extra ‘umbrella branded’ MSAs are at M25 Cobham, A14(M11) J28 Cambridge, M40 J2 Beaconsfield, M5 J28 Cullompton, M65 J4 Blackburn with Darwen, A1M J10 Baldock and A1M J17 Peterborough.
VOLKSWAGEN TO INSTALL CHARGING POINTS AT SUPERMARKETS IN BERLIN
"Volkswagen announced a strategic partnership with Schwarz Group, which owns food retailers Lidl and Kaufland, to install 140 public charging points in Berlin and potentially other cities in the future" reports InsideEVs: "The idea is to offer a charging option at supermarkets during opening hours, and support Volkswagen's WeShare car sharing fleet outside of open hours through exclusive charging rights. The German manufacturer says that the new approach will make the utilization of the charging stations more efficient. According to the press release, charging points will be installed at 70 stores (60 Lidl and 10 Kaufland), which will boost the Berlin charging infrastructure by around 20%."

VW JOINS SHORT-TERM RENTAL MARKET IN GERMANY WITH ELECTRIC-CAR FLEET
"Volkswagen Group has joined the increasingly crowded short-term rental market with its new WeShare offering, which will seek to distinguish itself from rivals with an electric-only car fleet. The service started in Berlin on Thursday with 1,500 full-electric Golf hatchbacks and will add 500 e-Up minicars as well as some of the first ID3 vehicles next year." according to Automotive News Europe: "The offering could help Volkswagen bolster its push into electric vehicles by making them more visible with consumers in what is effectively a paid test drive."

AVERAGE AGE OF CARS AND LIGHT TRUCKS IN US RISES AGAIN IN 2019 TO 11.8 YEARS
"The average age of light vehicles in operation (VIO) in the US has risen again this year to 11.8 years, according to new research from business information provider IHS Markit." says Green Car Congress: "Light vehicles in operation in the US have now reached a record level of more than 278 million according to the analysis—an increase of more than 5.9 million (2.2%) since 2018. This represents one of the highest annual increases the US auto industry has seen since IHS Markit began tracking VIO growth—second only to the 2.3% growth in 2016."
Mark Seng, director, global automotive aftermarket practice: "Better technology and overall vehicle quality improvements continue to be key drivers of the rising average vehicle age over time. The 40 percent drop in new vehicle sales due to the recession created an acceleration in average age like we’ve never seen before. In the last couple of years, however, average age has returned to its more traditional rate of increase."

MG DEALER NETWORK IN UK TO BE READY TO HANDLE ELECTRIC VEHICLES
"This summer MG is busy gearing up for the launch of the MG ZS EV in UK, which will go on sale in September with customer deliveries from Autumn." reports InsideEVs: "British brand MG (currently part of the Shanghai-based SAIC Motor) decided to implement a set of standards specifically for hybrid and electric vehicles across the entire dealer network. All of the 92 dealerships will be required to install at least two charging points, as well as train the staff and technicians."

BMW CEO REPORTEDLY RISKS REPLACEMENT AMID POOR SALES, WEAK EV STRATEGY
"Amidst BMW’s current challenges, the publication alleges that the automaker no longer considers an extension of Krüger’s CEO contract as the most plausible scenario in the near future." reports Teslarati "Talks of tensions in BMW’s leadership have emerged, and an insider has even noted that there is “high pressure in the boiler.” If Krüger is not able to keep his CEO post, two board members are reportedly set to take over his seat: the ambitious Head of Development Klaus Fröhlich and the more tempered Oliver Zipse, who took over BMW’s production department from Krüger back in 2015."

HERE IS THE PROTOTYPE FOR THE NEW GB/T – CHADEMO PLUG AND INLET
"CHAdeMO Association and the China Electricity Council (CEC) with blessing from Chinese and Japanese governments are working on a new "Ultimate" global fast charging standard with backward compatibility to older CHAdeMO and GB/T. During the CHAdeMO’s general assembly, the prototype version of the new GB/T – CHAdeMO inlet was presented and according to what we have read, the power output will increase to 900 kW (at 900 A and 1,000 V)." picks up InsideEVs.
Whilst another report points out "The goal is to design a new common plug and vehicle inlet that can support up to 600A at up to 1,500V for a total power of 900 kW. This compares to the CHAdeMO 2.0 specification updated last year to support 400A at up to 1,000V or 400 kW. The CCS specification supported by South Korean, North American, and European car makers supports up to 400A continuously at 1,000V for 400 kW although several companies make CCS chargers that output up to 500A.
