Show #515
Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Monday 1st July 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time.
Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.
I’m loving their articles too, the latest being: Electrified Pickup Trucks Are Coming Whether The Market Wants Them Or Not.
Peter Osborn on Facebook: "Good mix of stories including Tesla and leaf not just his zoe which plays minor role. up to date with UK and international stories. almost every day which is incredible for one man show."
Luke on Facebook: "After listening to your podcast for the past year I finally did it. Just bought a used 14 i3. Your the first person I’m messaging about this because I’m probably going to made fun for the rest of my life for this but dam did it feel good to plug in. "
EVS TO MAKE 'ENGINE' NOISE
One of the things I like most about my car is how quiet it is at low speeds. With the windows down, and at a low speed, I find it relaxing to be sitting in silence. But now new laws all around the world are adding fake noise on the grounds of safety. And I do understand this one. More than once I've been in a car park following people walking to their car down the middle of the road, and they've not been aware of my presence because it's an EV. Plus in car parks I have had people walk out in front of me because they're not expecting a car to be there - at least they're relying on their ears to hear a car. I imagine it happens in places like car parks because people aren't as vigilant as when crossing a three-lane road with cars driving at 60mph.
Now today we are facing noiser EVs in Europe with a new law, primarily to help the visually impaired, although this will certainly help my close call situations.
"EV models in the European Union require a noise-emitting device (Acoustic Vehicle Alert System, or AVAS) that kicks in whenever the vehicle is driving below 19km/h (12MPH). The system will theoretically prevent pedestrians and cyclists from being caught unawares by cars that would otherwise be near-silent." reports Engadget: "All new EVs, including those from existing lineups, will have to include noisemakers by 2021. Cars already on the streets are likely to get retrofits."
However as a counter point, at speeds below 12mph a piece of research shows that petrol combustion cars are almost as quiet, and therefore EVs were being singled out and unfairly punished.

BENTLEY PREVIEWS ALL-ELECTRIC EXP 100 GT CONCEPT
"Bentley is celebrating its centenary in 2019. And now the company has teased the centrepiece of its celebrations: a new concept car, called EXP 100 GT" says EVO magazine: "Details remain scarce before the concept’s official reveal on July 10, but the technology is expected to be borrowed from the Porsche Taycan and Audi e-Tron GT – two premium EV models on a new platform called J1, which is mooted to be shared across into the Bentley model range. As such, expect the EXP 100 GT to be powered by multiple electric motors, driving all four wheels beneath a sleek four-seater body."

GERMANY EXTENDS THEIR EV SUBSIDIES
Back in February on the podcast, I told you about a plan in Germany to extend their EV subsidies beyond June 2019, what they cal the Environmental Bonus. Then in May, we talked about the scheme being extended for BEVs and PEHVs until then end of 2020, to kick in immediately after the expiry of the old one yesterday. And right on schedule, these are Germans after all, ow we have news from Electrive: "The purchase premiums for electric cars and plug-in hybrids have now been officially extended until the end of 2020. And there is news. The extension of so-called Umweltbonus (environmental grant) will apply from 1 July after the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Energy announced as much in May. What is new is a conveyor module for the installation of an acoustic warning system for blind and visually impaired people (Acoustic Vehicle Alerting Systems – AVAS). These will be subsidised with 100 euros. Battery-electric cars and fuel cell vehicles are eligible for 2,000 euros each by the state and the manufacturer."

END OF A QUARTER FOR TESLA
Without wanting to reopen the debate about taking Tesla private, something which frustrates me from the perspective of being an outside observer, is the high pressure focus on Tesla delivering as many vehicles as possible every quarter and the resulting movement of the share price. Surely it can't be good for have this spotlight on whether it will be a hit or a miss for being a record quarter? And whatever the result, some media will either report it as Tesla missed target or Tesla narrowly hits target.
This time around they have China and European deliveries to add in, on top of their goal of 33,000 deliveries in North America in June. The best guesses out there online put the quarter at 60,000 in North America and potentially 90,000 worldwide.
This is how CNBC reported it earlier today: [audio]
MERCEDES-BENZ A250E PHEV COMING WITH 15 KWH BATTERY?
"According to a report by Autocar, Mercedes-Benz insiders and an official German transport authority documentation have revealed that an A250e variant will be added to the A-Class hatchback range. If that last letter looks familiar to you, that's because it's a suffix added to electrified Mercedes cars, such as the C300e." says the UK version of the autoomtive site Motor1.com: "the A250e will be powered by the same 1.3-litre turbo petrol engine on the A200, which delivers 161 bhp and 184 pound-feet torque. However, a gearbox-mounted electric motor will support the setup, adding 101 bhp and 221 lb-ft. The report also added that a 15 kWh lithium-ion battery under the rear seats will power the electric motor in the A250e. The battery is sourced from LG Chem. In pure battery power, the upcoming plugin hybrid hatchback is expected to reach 37 miles as measured on the WLTP combined cycle. Autocar added that an official German transport authority documentation indicated that the top speed while in this mode is 87 miles per hour."

RENAULT-NISSAN-MITSUBISHI ALLIANCE INVESTS IN THE MOBILITY HOUSE
"Alliance Ventures (the venture capital arm of Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance) announced another investment in an EV-related company - The Mobility House, described as "a technology company that provides a platform for integrating vehicle batteries into power grids using intelligent charging, energy and storage solutions"." says InsideEVs.
A statement said: "Alliance member companies and The Mobility House have already embarked on several projects together. For instance, through collaboration with The Mobility House, the Nissan LEAF was the first electric car to be used in a Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) project in Germany, in Hagen. Cooperating with Groupe Renault, The Mobility House will market the biggest stationary energy storage systems made with electric vehicle batteries in Europe and contribute through its smart energy platform to make the Portuguese island of Porto Santo, near Madeira, the first “smart island” in the world."
