Show #519

Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Friday 5th July 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time.

Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.

LIGHTYEAR ONE SOLAR-CHARGING EV MAKES UK DEBUT

"Dutch start-up Lightyear has shown off a prototype of its One long-range solar car at the Goodwood Festival of Speed." reports Autocar: "The One is a lightweight, four-wheel drive, coupé-style four-door, which Lightyear says will offer a range of around 450 miles on the WLTP combined cycle from a solar-electric hybrid powertrain. The static prototype was first revealed in June, and makes its public debut at the Sussex event. Lightyear claims the One is able to achieve this segment-leading range even with a much smaller battery than that found in equivalent BEVs, because it consumes much less energy than conventional electric cars.  Each wheel is independently driven, minimising loss of energy throughout the drivetrain, while the use of ultra-light materials for its body construction reduces strain on the battery’s output."

HONDA E SILENTLY CLIMBS THE GOODWOOD HILL LOOKING ADORABLE

"Honda E is a small electric vehicle created primarily for city use. With a range of around 124 miles (200 km) from its 35.5-kWh battery, this isn’t the EV to buy if you plan on taking extended trips while suffering from range anxiety." according to Motor1.com: "The Honda E wasn’t going particularly fast while climbing the famous hill, but it’s understandable considering it wasn’t a production-ready car. Bear in mind the final product won’t come cheap, with the rumor mill indicating it will cost somewhere in the region of €40,000 in Europe. That’s a lot of money to pay for such a small car that looks like a futuristic first-gen Civic, but it certainly does have its particular charm to woo customers. When can we expect to see the road-going E? Honda has said it will unveil it before the year’s end, so it might debut in September at the Frankfurt Motor Show."

VOLKSWAGEN TYPE 20 EV MICROBUS CONCEPT

"Built to celebrate 20 years of VW's presence and technology in Silicon Valley, this electric VW Bus is a showcase for tech and packs a lot more horsepower than the original Type 2." says Car & Driver: "The Volkswagen Type 20 Microbus concept looks a whole lot like the classic 1962 Type 2 11-window bus on which it's based.

Featuring a fully electric drivetrain, the Type 20 concept utilizes a single electric motor rated at 120 horsepower and 173 lb-ft of torque.

It's the product of VW's newly renamed Innovation and Engineering Center California (IECC), which is now the maker's largest vehicle research facility outside Germany. This is not, of course, the first electric VW Bus—the I.D. Buzz concept from 2018 comes to mind—but it looks a lot more like the 1962 model than that futuristic-looking concept did."

TESLA MODEL 4 EURO NCAP SAFETY RATING

"Tesla  has extended its 5-star safety rating streak to Europe. In a new round of testing, the European New Car Assessment Programme (Euro NCAP) awarded the Model 3 its highest rating of five stars. You can watch a video of Euro NCAP’s crash test below. As fun as it is to watch a Tesla Model 3 (or any vehicle) get pummeled in crash tests, understanding what helped push the company’s safety rating so high is far more interesting." reports TechCrunch today: "this assessment focused on the car’s active safety features such as automatic emergency braking system (AEB) or one that prevents drivers from unintentionally drifting into another lane. The Tesla Model 3 earned the highest safety assist score ever awarded by Euro NCAP under its newer 2018-2019 testing protocols."

MOTOE FINALLY SET FOR ELECTRIC DEBUT

The inaugural weekend of MotoE™ is finally here as the new class take on the Sachsenring.

the time has finally come for the FIM Enel MotoE™ World Cup to go racing. Preseason testing went well, including an E-Pole and race simulation in Valencia, and the grid of 18 riders are more than raring to race.

The Sachsenring hosts the history-making weekend; a tight and twisty track that should be a stunning venue for MotoE™’s debut – with the machines having shown some impressive corner speed in testing.

RARE SIGHT: POLESTAR 2 AT FASTNED CHARGING STATION

"A Tesla Model 3 driver was lucky enough to come across two rare sights: first, Polestar 2 prototypes at a Fastned charging station. Then, a Porsche Taycan at another charging station." says InsideEVs: "Since the all-electric Porsche gets plenty of coverage, let's focus on the new Polestar 2, which will be available in 2020. The two black prototypes were out on road tests/charging tests and we must admit that they look amazing. These cars are very attractive, much like the Jaguar I-PACE. Perhaps this will have a positive impact on future sales."

Polestar 2 specs:

78 kWh battery (324 pouch cells, 27 modules, liquid-cooled)

target 500 km (311 miles) of WLTP range

expected 275 miles (442 km) of EPA range

0-100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.7 seconds
