Show #520

Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Sunday 7th July 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time.

Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.

Over the weekend I saw PCP added to the Model 3 design studio. For the spec I would have, which is Performance, in black, with Performance upgrade and Full Self Driving that's £59.890. PCP is £6k down and £817 a month over 4 years. Hire Purchase is £937 a month with £10,000 down and over 5 years.

VOLKSWAGEN I.D. R IMPROVES GOODWOOD HILL RECORD

"On July 6, Romain Dumas made use of another run in the Volkswagen I.D. R at the 2019 Goodwood Festival of Speed and further improved its all-time record to 39.9 seconds (compared to 41.18 seconds in the practice run)." says InsideEVs: "Both times beat the 41.60-second time set in 1999 by Nick Heidfeld driving a McLaren MP4/13. We're more than certain that 20 years ago no one would have imagined that an electric car could be be quicker than an F1. The Volkswagen I.D. R driven at Goodwood is a special sprint version of the I.D. R, with a smaller battery pack, since the track length is just 1.16-mile."

JAGUAR LAND ROVER ANNOUNCES RANGE OF EVS TO BE BUILT IN WEST MIDLANDS PLANT

"Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has announced it is set to build a new range of electric vehicles at its manufacturing plant in Castle Bromwich, Birmingham." reports the Evening Standard: "Honouring its commitment to deliver electrified options for all new Jaguar and Land Rover models by next year, a next-generation all-electric Jaguar XJ will be the first vehicle in the range to enter production. Crafted by the team behind the Jaguar I-PACE – the brand's first all-electric car – the new saloon promises to deliver in design, performance and luxury, although the company has given no indication as to when it might take to the road. Marking the next stage of the company's electrification strategy, the news is seen as a major thumbs up to the UK's automotive industry, which has been hampered by factory closures and job cuts in recent years."

TESLA YOUTUBER BJØRN NYLAND BREAKS 24-HOUR ELECTRIC CAR DISTANCE RECORD

"today we’ve seen yet another reason not to worry about the capability to take EVs on long trips, as Bjørn Nyland has managed to drive 2,781km (1,728mi) in 24 hours in a Tesla Model 3 Long Range AWD.  Nyland set this record on IONITY quick chargers in Germany because currently, that network is significantly faster than Tesla’s Superchargers." says Jameson Dow for InsideEVs: "Nyland wanted to emphasize that this record could be done in “realistic” conditions, so there was no closed course and common road rules were followed.  The record was set in Germany, on the Autobahn, and was done at high speeds, around 170km/h (105mph) much of the time. Staying at high speeds inbetween stops resulted in an average speed of 115km/h or 72mph over the entire 24 hours.  Essentially, he was able to travel the same distance as if he drove at US highway speeds consistently for 24 hours without stopping at all."

The sweet spot for charging at the fastest rates was 10%to 63% so they were driving a 120km loop.

THE ODYSSEY 21 IS THE ELECTRIC OFF ROAD RACE TRUCK FORMULA E WANTS YOU TO GET EXCITED ABOUT

"The Extreme E car ran up the hill during the Goodwood Festival of Speed on Saturday afternoon. " according to Jalopnik: "According to Extreme E, the truck sits about 7.5 feet wide, 6.2 feet tall, and 14.4 feet front-to-back. The whole thing, ready to rock and roll, weighs some 3600 pounds. Each of the tires is 37 inches tall with tons of sidewall and lots of knobby Continental rubber to keep the thing trucking forward even in the nasty sand, ice, or dirt that the truck will come into contact with across the season. This is just a show car, built by Spark Racing Technologies [the same company which builds the Formula E chassis], to demonstrate what a finished product might look like."

RAJEEV NARAYAN

"90% of your listeners may be male but I am not sure that necessarily means that EVs are a "guy thing" Currently 85% of car purchasing decisions are made by women and apparently women are more likely to buy new than men. Men are more likely the ones closing the deal at dealership, but that does not mean that women are not involved in the purchase decision, weather the vehicle is an EV or not.  Maybe a better question is why are 90% of EV news daily podcast listeners male?"

BRIAN WEATHERALL

To avoid any generalising I’ll take the safer option and talk about the woman I know the best, my wife, I’m also safe to know she doesn’t listen to your podcast…..

She would no more go to an EV event than to the Motor Show, to her a car is a way to go places and spend my money (sorry “our” money I am reminded).  Taking the LEAF means she can spend a little less of her money as she doesn’t need to put fuel in it.  Other than that it’s just a car to her.  But I’m happy it’s usually the first choice out of our two cars as it only really saves money when it’s moving.

I can tell you in the UK Nissan Leaf Owners Group the gender split is 75% men,  many are in the group to offer help, some just for the banter, many are there to ask for help, maybe men just need more help?

HOWARD ANTHONY SMITH

I do not think the demographics of your listening audience are reflective of how women perceive electric vehicles. For example, my spouse really hates listen to or watching shows about cars, but she loves driving my car (PHEV Prius Prime) in all electric mode. She is really excited about the prospects of replacing her vehicle with a Model Y when they become available in the near future. I also have female coworkers who drive Tesla's and are constantly evangelizing to others the benefits of driving electric cars.

It could be that stereotypical males really love learning about cars and statistics about cars as a way of playing verbal top trumps with their friends. Personally, I find knowing about vehicles statics provides me with something to talk about in social settings. Talking about electric cars in comparison with ICE vehicles allows me plenty of material to engage with my muscle car owning friends.

STEVE JAMES

Men just enjoy cars more than women across the range so it doesn’t matter if it’s a petrol, diesel, PHEV or BEV men just enjoy cars more than women.

GREG LEFF

Hi Martyn -  brief note about the QOTW -here in the southwest United States in an affluent suburb of Phoenix, Arizona we have loads of EV’s running around our streets. It’s no scientific analysis but I would hazard a guess that at least 30% of the drivers of those EV’s are female. That’s a minimum guess - I could be as much as 50% or more. In my own household we have 3 vehicles, a Nissan Leaf driven by my daughter, a BMW i3 Rex driven by my wife, and a gas burner driven by me. So you see 100% of the EV’s in my house are female driven.

What you’re likely seeing in your listenership is the fact that men are more likely to nerd out over EV’s and want to listen to a podcast talking about them. The women just want to drive and enjoy the smooth, quiet, gas-free miles.

BRENNA KAMINSKI

I have been involved with EVs since 2012 and after years of running EV education events, advising on infrastructure, and co-founding two EV clubs I decided to launch my own EV consulting service www.evgal.com.

Before launching the website I noticed that most of the other consultants out there in the EV world are men, almost all of the videos I watch about EVs feature men hosts and "experts", and the majority of the EV conversations on platforms like LinkedIn are started by men. I know there are other women out there but we aren't being invited into the conversation.

STEPHEN AND MICHELLE LOO

I believe your 90% male following on youtube / podcast is simply a representation of the market who follow motoring and technology trends. You will probably find your followers also fall into the 25-65 age group as this is the age group when most would have the income or necessity for these items.

SANDI WILLIAMS

I have a Model 3 Performance, and I love, love, love it.  I listen to you probably 4-5 days a week. Did you know that the podcast came pre-loaded as an app on my car?

So in case you think woman aren't listening..... this one is, and I love hearing about what is happening in the EV world and it is nice to listen to someone who isn't Tesla bashing.

VAIDAS

Was asking my missus last night and she is just simply not interested too much, she needs a car thats able to safely move her from A to B in comfort and style :) I think you mentioned your wife is pretty much the same? Perhaps its a man think to talk about cars, no matter if its a V6 BMW or V8 Mustang or V12 Ferrari or  22kWh Zoe

CHARLIE FOX

In the case of my home, I believe it is down to my wife doesn't really care about cars. She doesn't see value in high dollar cars and is perfectly happy with our two Prius (you know, those self-charging hybrids...)

In my case I am, generally, not a car or truck person. However, I am interested in the environment and emissions and from this have been waiting on electrics since GM starting making and crushing cars. And this makes me seek out shows like yours so I can keep up with events and watch for that opportunity to buy.

My wife has moved to agree with me that we will not buy another ICE car and we will very likely buy a 45-50k Model Y in 2022.

TOM RAFTERY

Re my own thoughts on your q, driving rightly or wrongly is something men care more about than women. Go out on the street right now and check out the gender of the drivers of the cars passing you and they will be significantly skewed male.

How many married couples do you know where when travelling it is the woman who drives primarily when they are going together in the car (apart from returning from the pub!)?

ARON MCINNES

Are EV’s a man thing? No I don’t think it is a man thing. I think listening about, researching and dreaming about EV’s is a man thing. It is more likely that men will spend time thinking about a car. Women who drive EV’s love them. I think women just don’t obsess about there next car or what the are going to do with the car they have.

IAIN

EV's don't seem that unusual in my group of friends and I wonder if gay men are more likely to be environmentally conscious and as a result are more likely to be interested in electrified transport.

DAFYDD

I think men are generally more likely to be nerds, for a number of reasons. Some of which may be, that many view cars as more than just a tool, to get from A-B. Women despite some men’s attempts, still do most if not all of the family & house things. And all too often have very little time to obsess about irrelevances, such as this car can do that with only that; or will do more with less.

DAVID FINCH

I checked the list of people who use our workplace EV chargers, and found that there are 7 men and 5 women. A small sample, and near enough to even.

So, I think women are just as likely to own and drive an EV as men. I think men are more likely to geek-out about them though, such as listening to a podcast or visiting Fully Charged Live.

JOHN FRUHWIRTH

In the early days of computing, computers were also a "male" thing until social media came along. As soon as that happened, women became interested as they could now indulge their top priority - relationships.

Should we do things like electric racing, or setting electric records, which inevitably means burning at least some fossil fuels?
