Show #529

Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Monday 15th July 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time.

Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.

We have a new EXECUTIVE PRODUCER in our ranks, put your hands together and give a big welcome to JEFF HELINSKI

TESLA CHANGE PRICES TO MAKE BASE MODEL 3 MORE AFFORDABLE

"Tesla has dropped the standard-range variants of its Model X and Model S from its product lineup and adjusted prices across its range, in a sales push that comes days after the U.S. electric vehicle maker reported record deliveries." says Reuters today.

From Tesla: "“To make purchasing our vehicles even simpler, we are standardizing our global vehicle lineup and streamlining the number of trim packages offered for Model S, Model X and Model 3. We are also adjusting our pricing in order to continue to improve affordability for customers.”

Here are the headline you need to know:

Pearl White Multi coat is now the standard colour, of your choice of 5

There's no standard white.

Ludicrous pack is now standard on Performance cars (was $20,000)

Solid Black, formerly included, is now $1,000 / £950

Model 3 Standard Range Plus is down to $38,990 / £36,490

Model 3 Long Range RWD is discontinued.

The jump from Model 3 Long Range to Performance, in the UK, is $3,650. From £45,490 to £49,140.

Silver and Blue are $1,500 / £1,450

Red Multi-Coat is $2,500 / £2,500

The Standard Range Model S & X are discontinued. You can choose Long Range or Performance. So to get yourself into an S or X it's a bigger jump.

Starting prices for the Model S are $79,990 / £77,200

Model S Performance is $99,990 / £91,800

Starting prices for the Model X are $84,990 / (the Six Seater is $6,000, Seven Seater is $3000)

Model X Performance is $104,990 / £96,400

Full Self Driving is $6,000 / £5,800

There's an added consideration in the UK, any car over £40,000 attracts a Premium Car Tax of £340 over years 2 - 6. It's for the total cost of the car INCLUDING delivery. Tesla just reduced the cost of the Model 3 to £39,990 BUT there is an £840 delivery.

From Smythey: "Just spoke to Tesla - they are adjusting prices for existing orders that are affected by the price changes, and a revised order agreement will appear in Tesla accounts.  Confirmed the price for my Pearl White SR+ will be updated to today’s prices. Very happy with this. Was intending to cancel and reorder but glad I don't have to."

GOVERNMENT PLANS FOR ELECTRIC CAR CHARGE POINTS TO BE INSTALLED IN ALL FUTURE HOMES

"The government has announced a public consultation for new plans that could see all new-build homes fitted with an electric car chargepoint." reports Infrastructure Intelligence: "The proposals aim to support and encourage the growing uptake of electric vehicles within the UK by ensuring that all new homes with a dedicated car parking space are built with an electric charge point, making charging easier, cheaper and more convenient for drivers. The legislation would be a world first."

FIAT PREPARES TO PRODUCE THE 500 ELECTRIC

"FCA announced that it’s setting up the assembly line to produce the Fiat 500 Electric at the Mirafiori plant in Turin. It’ll have an annual capacity of 80.000 units." according to Pedro at Push EVs: "Around 1,200 people will be dedicated to production of the Fiat 500 BEV (Battery Electric Vehicle) and the new assembly line will have an annual capacity of 80,000 units. The platform being installed at the plant is specific to electric cars and its first application will be the Fiat 500 BEV. Today, the first robot was installed and the rest of the plant will be retooled over the coming months. In the body shop alone, there will be a total of 200 robots enabling a fully-automated welding process. Production of the first pre-production models is scheduled to begin by year-end. Around 1,200 people will be dedicated to production of the Fiat 500 BEV and the new assembly line will have an annual capacity of 80,000 units, with the potential for expansion."

MOSCOW ORDERS ELECTRIC BUSES IN VOLUME

"Hundreds of electric buses per year will be ordered by Moscow. Kamaz caught the wave and is building a plant for 500 EV buses per year." says InsideEVs: "According to the latest news, the Russian capital intends to purchase 300 electric buses per year in 2019-2020. The first 200 were ordered in Spring 2018 (100 from Kamaz and 100 from GAZ Group), followed by another 100 from Kamaz in April 2019 (together with 36 charging stations). The volume is surprisingly high and above most of the cities in Western Europe. From 2021 on, Moscow would like to purchase only electric buses."

LITHIUM-ION RECYCLING RATES FAR HIGHER THAN SOME STATISTICS SUGGEST

"While it is often stated only 5% of lithium-ion batteries are recycled, a review of research into the second life and recycling of lithium-ion batteries suggests that is a gross understatement. A new study found almost 100,000 tons of waste batteries were recycled last year – about half of what reached end-of-life." reports PV Magazine: "Dissemination of unreliable or obsolete data is possible because no official statistics are available. However, London-based research and consulting group Circular Energy Storage has collected information from 50 or so global lithium-ion recycling companies and found as much as 97,000 tons were recycled last year, 67,000 in China and 18,000 in South Korea."

MINI COULD BECOME A FULLY ELECTRIC BRAND

"MINI could make the radical jump to becoming a fully electric car brand, senior bosses have exclusively revealed to Auto Express."  in a report by Jonathan Burn today: "Peter Schwarzenbauer, Member of the Board of Management at BMW responsible for MINI, told us that legislation in major cities and increasing consumer interest in electric vehicles could see MINI becoming an electric only brand."

DAIMLER WARNS ON PROFIT AGAIN

"Daimler warned investors on Friday that it expected a second-quarter loss, saying an increase in provisions for an extended recall in connection with Takata airbags was partly to blame." according to Automotive News Europe: "The automaker warned investors that it expected a second-quarter loss before interest and taxes of 1.6 billion euros ($1.8 billion) after a 2.6 billion profit posted in the year earlier period. The automaker also took a hit of 1.6 billion euros following a reassessment made in connection with ongoing governmental and court proceedings and measures relating to Mercedes-Benz diesel vehicles."
