Show #560

Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Saturday 24th August 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time.

Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.

Thank you to two new Patrons over the weekend. First up new PRODUCER BODO and EXECUTIVE PRODCER NORTHERNEXPLORERS

A follow up from Barry Wolf about navigation systems in EVs showing petrol stations: "When I use Apple CarPlay (my lower trim level e-Golf does not include built in navigation), pressing "Destinations" brings up a series of buttons for points of interest, one of which provides a list of nearby gas stations. It seems the VW group has made this feature available for Audis and VWs. Maybe the Taycan will get this feature, too? I have complained about this to VW, but VW blames Apple. Since the Bolt EV also uses Apple CarPlay but shows an EV charging station button instead of the gas pump button, it is clear VW dropped the ball on correctly programming the iPhone interface."

EVGO AND ELECTRIFY AMERICA TEAM UP TO MAKE CHARGERS MORE ACCESSIBLE

"Finding a fast charger in the U.S. just got a lot easier for a lot of electric-car drivers. Two of America's largest fast-charging networks announced an agreement Thursday to allow each other's users to charge at their charging sites without signing up for new memberships or payment plans." according to Eric for Green Car Reports: "Electrify America and EVgo agreed to a roaming partnership that will allow members of either service to charge at any EVgo or Electrify America charging station. Each of the networks already has individual agreements with the nation's other largest networks, ChargePoint and Greenlots. That means that drivers of EVs other than Teslas are have a widespread network in many ways on par with Tesla's Superchargers that they can use to top off their batteries. Unlike Tesla's Supercharger network, however, EVgo chargers are concentrated in and around cities—where EVgo points out that most EVs drive—rather than along highways between cities where the chargers could allow drivers to make longer trips between cities, as Tesla's Superchargers do."

BLOOMBERG: LG CHEM TO SUPPLY BATTERIES FOR TESLA MODEL 3 IN CHINA

"According to Bloomberg, Tesla has selected LG Chem as the non-exclusive supplier of lithium-ion battery cells for Model 3 that will be produced at the Gigafactory 3 in Shanghai, China." reports InsideEVS: "The origin of this revelation are Bloomberg's unofficial sources. LG Chem is expected to supply Tesla with 21700 cylindrical cells, produced in Nanjing, some 200 miles (320 km) west of Shanghai. Separately, Tesla is reportedly still in talks with CATL, which also might become a supplier. The report doesn't say anything about negotiations with Panasonic, which was the main battery supplier for Tesla so far. LG Chem batteries also to be used for the base version of Tesla Model Y, once production of those will be launched in the future."

And meanwhile from Teslarati: "In an interview, Tesla Global Vice President Grace Tao stated that Gigafactory 3 is already mostly complete. Tao noted that the installation of production equipment within the factory is progressing well, and machines are already being debugged in preparation for trial Model 3 production runs. Local reports have also noted that Gigafactory 3’s substation is expected to start powering the complex sometime next month. Barring any unexpected delays, this could result in Gigafactory 3 coming to life as early as the end of September."

PORSCHE TAYCAN MIGHT STREAM MOVIES WITHOUT DISTRACTING DRIVER

A new report featured in Motor1: "claims that Porsche plans to offer video streaming in the Taycan. Netflix is identified as the streaming service of choice, but its availability is apparently still in question. The word allegedly came from Porsche’s Director of Driver Experience Oliver Fritz during a recent media preview event for the electric supercar, though it was qualified with a statement that Porsche is working on it, but wants to make it safe."

PORSCHE WANTS TO DESTROY THE WORD "TURBO"

From Jalopnik today talking about the Porsche Taycan: "You may have also heard that the first version to make it to market will be the higher-spec, faster model, which Porsche has been calling the Taycan Turbo. This is a terrible, terrible name for the car, because if there’s one thing you can absolutely say about the Taycan, it’s that the car has nothing even remotely like a turbo in it. You cannot have a “turbo” electric car because nothing about a turbo is compatible with how electric motors work. It’d be like if McDonalds started offering a McHDMI burger, suggesting that, somehow, that cheeseburger had an HDMI port on it, even though there is nothing inside a cheeseburger that would work in any way at all with an HDMI connection. Porsche calling the Taycan a “Turbo” is just as idiotic."

It makes about as much sense as a Toyota Corolla hybrid sign written in big letter which says "Lean green all electric machine".

TOYOTA WILL DEPLOY 850 ELECTRIC VEHICLES AT THE OLYMPICS

"Toyota is providing the official fleet for the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Tokyo in 2020 and 90% of them will be electric. That’s 850 electric vehicles to be deployed next year — most of them new, including some weird ones." says electrek: "Toyota says that “the public roads surrounding the Toyota City Showcase “MEGAWEB” in the Tokyo Odaiba/Toyosu area are expected to be used for test rides/drives of vehicles with advanced driving technology” and the Concept-i will be one of the vehicles people are going to be able to try at the Olympics games."

TESLA ‘SUPERBOTTLE’ PROVES THAT THE MODEL 3’S DISRUPTION LIES IN ITS VERTICAL INTEGRATION

"During a recent interview with Tesla owner-enthusiast Sean Mitchell, Detroit veteran Sandy Munro of Munro and Associates mentioned that among the Model 3’s unique components, its “Superbottle” is one of the most innovative. Combining two pumps, one heat exchanger, and one coolant valve in one cleverly-designed bottle, the Model 3’s cooling system is arguably the most unique in the auto industry. " writes Simon at Teslarati: "The Chevy Bolt, for example, has three cooling systems: one for its battery pack, one for its cabin, and one for its electronics. This is not the case with the Model 3, as the fondly-named Superbottle handles the entire cooling system of the whole vehicle — battery pack, cabin, and electronics included. For Munro, the novel cooling system is the very definition of Tesla’s vertical integration. "

RESERVING ELECTRIC VAUXHALL CORSA-E COST ONLY £500 IN UK

"Buyers can reserve the electric version of Vauxhall’s new Corsa supermini for just £500, the British brand has confirmed. Dubbed the Corsa-e, the new model is the first of the revamped Corsa line-up to break cover, not to mention the most high-tech. Under the bonnet is a 134 bhp electric motor that’s powered by a 50 kWh battery to provide a 0-62 mph time of 8.1 seconds and a range of 205 miles." says InsideEVs today: "Vauxhall is offering would-be customers the opportunity to reserve their vehicle for £500. The sum is fully refundable on purchase of the car, and the first 500 British customers to make their reservations will receive a free home charging kit on delivery. Full pricing and specification details won’t be announced until the car makes its official debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show, and production won’t begin until January 2020."

NEW FAST-CHARGING NETWORK FOR ELECTRIC VEHICLES

"Australians who drive electric cars will soon find it easier to recharge, with the federal government ploughing $15 million into a network of ultra-fast charging stations on major highways." says the Sydney Morning Herald: "The Morrison government's Energy Minister Angus Taylor will announce the funding on Monday, as construction begins north of Brisbane on the first of 42 fast-charging stations to be built by start-up Evie over the next year at a total cost of $50 million. The charging network will make use of Tritium fast charge units, he said, manufactured by an Australian company with headquarters in Brisbane."

"Petrol users pay by quantity. EV drivers should ALSO pay by quantity. All charging companies be required by law to charge per kWh – do you agree?"
