Show #562

Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Monday 26th August 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time.

Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.

Someone else from Patreon to thank, DAVID KIDD is now a PRODUCER

PRODUCTION OF TESLA MODEL 3 IN GIGAFACTORY 3 IN CHINA HAS BEGUN

"A new set of images and videos were recently leaked online showing that the Tesla Model 3 has already entered the production phase. The leaked details reveal that the big T is now making the necessary preparations for the trial production runs of the Tesla Model 3 in Gigafactory 3." according to BusinessTimes.cn: "Significantly, the leaked photos reveal images of a couple of partly-built Tesla Model 3 in the assembly line. We have no information if the panels of the two sedans were made on-site or if the electric vehicles were only assembled from shipped components. But, it still goes to show that Gigafactory 3 is now operational and seems to be starting trial assemblies for the Tesla Model 3."

EUROPE PLUG-IN SALES FOR 2019 H1

"Plug-in vehicle sales in Europe reached 259 000 units in the first half of 2019, 34 % higher than for 2018 H1. These include all Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV) and Plug-in Hybrids (PHEV) in EU and EFTA countries, passenger cars and light commercial vehicles." reports Roland Irle, EV-volumes.com: "Demand and supply experiences a profound shift towards pure electric vehicles (BEV). While their share in plug-in sales was 51 % for 2018 H1, it has increased to 68 % for 2019 H1. The change reflects the introduction of the more stringent WLTP for fuel economy ratings, changes in taxation/grants promoting more BEV uptake and better supply of long-range BEVs. Germany and the Netherlands were the strongest growth contributors, in terms of volumes. Germany has become the largest market for plug-ins in Europe, displacing Norway to the #2 position for the first time. Norway is still the word leader in EV uptake, with a share of 47 % in this year's light vehicle sales, up 10 %-points from 2018 H1."

And it pains me to say: "Among the top-15 markets, UK is the only one in reverse this year. PHEVs lost their subsidies and BEV get 1000 GBP less than last year. The UK plans to set the BIK (Benefit In Kind) for company car taxation to zero for BEVs, starting in April 2020. This will postpone many BEV purchases to next year in the UK. Meanwhile, neighbour Ireland has become the fastest growing plug-in market in Europe."

Why is BIK at 0% such a big deal? "If you have a company car which is made available for private use (i.e you take it home in the evenings and at weekends), the taxman will apply a benefit-in-kind value to the vehicle. To work out the BIK value of a company car, you multiply the car’s P11D value by the percentage banding the car sits in."

Example, a car costs £40,000, it emits 125g/CO2 per km, and is therefore in band 30%, that's £12,000. You then take £12,000 and multiply it by your personal tax band, if you pay 40% tax, then you're paying £4800 every year to the taxman for the privilege of taking that car home at night. Oh and there's an extra 4% tax for diesel.

And it gets better, because for EV's only: "the cost of the car could be deducted from the salary pre-tax to pay for a vehicle on the scheme, with the employee effectively paying tax only on the BIK charge."

2020 CHEVY BOLT IS U.S.’ MOST AFFORDABLE EV PER MILE OF RANGE

"After Chevrolet announced the 2020 Bolt EV range and price at 259 miles (417 km) and $37,495 (including $875 destination fee), it now has the lowest price (MSRP + destination charge) per mile of EPA range.

The 2020 Bolt EV is #1 at $145 per mile, which is $2 less than the Hyundai Kona Electric and $13 less than the previous 2019 model year Bolt EV." says InsideEVs: "Chevrolet intends to start selling the 2020 Bolt EV this year, but it's rather unlikely we'll see it in Q3, which means we should stick with $135 per mile because that accounts for an extra $1,875 Federal Tax Credit. Of course, another thing is the real world price per mile, after including all the discounts from manufacturer and dealers, but that's untraceable."

PORSCHE TAYCAN CROWNED FASTEST FOUR-DOOR EV AT THE NURBURGRING

"Porsche is once again demonstrating the performance benefits to embracing electrification with the upcoming Taycan. Ditching the combustion engine altogether, the pure electric vehicle has set a new record for four-door EVs at the Nürburgring by lapping the famous German circuit in 7 minutes and 42 seconds." according to Motor1.com: "Porsche specifies the vehicle used for the record-breaking run was the range-topping variant with dual electric motors, one for each axle. Equipped with all-wheel drive and all-wheel steering, the EV riding on 21-inch wheels offered more than 600 horsepower at the driver’s disposal."

VOLKSWAGEN ID 4X SPY SHOTS REVEAL CROZZ

"The model that’s leading Volkswagen’s electric-car push—and what Volkswagen has called the replacement for the e-Golf, the city-focused ID 3 hatchback, isn’t coming to America." says Bengt for Green Car Reports: "the U.S. will be getting the second model, a rugged-themed, somewhat taller crossover hatchback based on the ID Crozz concept from 2017. Size-wise, it’s one of the most popular segments of the market, comparable to the Ford Escape, Toyota RAV4, or Honda CR-V—or the Tesla Model Y.  While the ID 3 will offer three different battery packs—48, 62, and 82 kwh (45, 58, and 77 kwh usable capacity)—we expect only the top two to be offered in the ID 4X. U.S. rated range has not been estimated as of yet, but both will have 100-kw CCS DC fast charging."

NIU PLANS NEW AFFORDABLE ELECTRIC MOPED BRAND GOVA STARTING AT AROUND $422

"NIU sold nearly 100,000 electric scooters worldwide last quarter, has expanded its sharing programs into over a dozen countries including the United States, and has shown Q2 revenue of US $74.8 million with a year-over-year growth of 38%." reports Micah Toll for electrek: "While NIU’s high-tech, connected scooters are firmly planted in the premium electric scooter category, the company also wants to target the medium-level scooter market. To do so, the company is at work on three different mid-range electric scooters for its new Gova line: The Gova G1, Gova G3, and Gova G5. NIU expects the G1 to debut in the price range of US $422-$563. To reach such low prices, the Gova line won’t contain many of the smart features that make NIU’s main line of electric scooters so connected."

TESLA SCOUTING NEW FACTORY LOCATIONS IN GERMANY

"German newspaper Rheinische Post reported on August 25 that representatives from Tesla have been scouting locations for a possible European factory in the state of North Rhine–Westphalia, which is located in western Germany and shares a border with the Netherlands and Belgium" says CleanTechnica today: "Representatives of the government and of Tesla have declined to elaborate further on the subject."

BOLLINGER'S BOXYLICIOUS OFF-ROADING EVS WILL BREAK COVER ON SEPTEMBER 26

"New York-based Bollinger Motors once looked like it would beat automakers big and small to the electric off-roader segment. Rival Rivian stole its thunder by presenting two head-turning concept cars during the 2018 Los Angeles auto show, but Bollinger is ready for a tussle. It's fine-tuning its first prototypes, and it will present them to the public on September 26." writes Autoblog: "The truck depicted in the 50-second long clip is only partially assembled, but we can tell it hasn't changed much visually in its transition from a .jpg to a test mule. It still looks like a retro-inspired, cinder block-shaped Jeep Wrangler-Land Rover Defender cross packed with clever features, including a pass-through that stretches from the frunk to the trunk, six individual removable roof panels, and lots of storage compartments."
